The striker has much to be proud of in his international career but shouldn’t be too proud to travel to England to undergo a trial. Ahn wants instead to follow in the footsteps of Park Ji-sung and Lee Young-pyo who were chased by Rovers’ rivals, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur before being signed directly. While it may be different in South Korea, trials are common in England – every club has them - and it is no shame to take one. Japanese star Mitsuo Ogasawara recently had one with West Ham and China’s Sun Xiang did the same with Wigan Athletic. Trialists usually spend three or four days training with the team. It is a chance for the coach to look at the player, his ability, attitude, fitness and whether he gets on with the other players. Ryan Nelson took a trial at Blackburn last season after being rejected by Charlton Athletic. The defender has since turned into a real hero with Rovers and is now regarded as one of the best defenders in England. Many players get turned down after trials – John Carew was successful with Valencia after Blackburn said no. One of the best players in the history of the Premier League, Eric Cantona, originally came to England to for a trial and was soon the most important Manchester United player as they won title after title. Trials are used to get information on a player and are a chance to see him in action and close up. One reason why United didn’t need to give Park a trial was because they watched him over 20 times for PSV Eindhoven. The fact that Park and Lee played for one of Europe’s top clubs and had impressed in the UEFA Champions League also demonstrated that they could succeed in England. Ahn should realise that his situation is different. Four years ago, Blackburn were interested in the striker and there would have been no need for a trial at that time. That was because he had just impressed during the World Cup, he had proved that he could perform against some of the best players on the planet. That was a long time ago and from Blackburn’s point of view; they will have heard little about him since. In those four years Ahn has played in Japan, been injured and spent five months in and out of a struggling French team. For a coach looking to finish in the top six in England and is looking for strikers, that record does not guarantee a player who can improve the team – coach Mark Hughes isn’t going to sign a player that he has never seen play and it is understandable that he wants to have a look at Ahn. Park and Lee put themselves into strong positions through their performances at the top level but Ahn hasn’t done so. In an ideal scenario, he would be able to choose from a number of top European teams but if he isn’t an automatic starter in a team facing relegation in France then he can’t expect Chelsea, Real Madrid or Juventus to be fighting to sign him. It should also be remembered that Ahn’s agent contacted the club, not the other way round. Usually, a club identifies the player it is interested in and then watches him in action as often as possible as was the case with Park. If then the manager likes what he sees then a bid will be made. The only alternative to a trial would be to for Rovers to watch Ahn play for Metz as much as possible. However, it can be difficult as he doesn’t play so often and it would take too long. Of course, it is possible that if Ahn went to Blackburn that he would be rejected. That is not always a bad thing as Eric Cantona discovered. Other English teams may then take the opportunity to look at him while he was in the country. By refusing to go on trial at Blackburn he is limiting his options now and in the future – he could be giving up his last chance to play in England. Other clubs will notice his refusal to take a trial. Perhaps the player feels that if he has an impressive World Cup then he will be able to move straight to a Premier League team. It is a gamble as he didn’t receive many offers after being one of the stars of the tournament in 2002 and now he is in his thirties will receive less next summer. Additionally, there is no guarantee that he will play but he has much more chance of being selected by Dick Advocaat in Germany after spending time in the Premier League than in France. Facing some of the best teams in the world such as Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal would be perfect preparation for the competition. The striker obviously has little future with Metz as the team recently signed new attackers and is prepared to release him now. At the age of thirty, he will be lucky to get better offers and he has nothing to lose by going to Blackburn for a trial, it could be the best move he ever makes. |
