경찰청이 5·18 민주화운동을 왜곡·폄훼하는 가짜뉴스 유포에 대해 적극 수사하고 관련 게시물을 삭제·차단하겠다고 22일 밝혔다. 이재명 대통령이 전날 “5·18 관련 가짜뉴스와 피해자 모욕 행위를 응징하라”고 지시한 지 하루 만이다.

경찰청은 이날 “최근 온라인을 통해 5·18 민주화운동법 위반 행위가 확산되는 것에 대해 사안의 심각성을 엄중하게 인식하고 있다”며 “5·18 민주화운동의 의미가 훼손되지 않도록 허위 사실 유포에 대해 엄정하게 대응해 나가겠다”고 했다.

경찰은 현재 ‘5·18은 폭동’이라는 내용의 여러 게시글과, 생성형 AI로 5·18을 왜곡하는 신문 기사 이미지를 만든 작성자를 추적하고 있다고 밝혔다. 최근 온라인에서 광주일보의 제호를 도용해 ‘5·18, 북에서 지령받은 간첩들 무기고 탈취, 계엄군 무차별 공격’이라는 제목의 가짜 기사 이미지가 유포되는 것을 겨냥한 것이다.

경찰 관계자는 “SNS 등을 통해 확산되는 5·18 관련 허위 사실에 대해 무관용 원칙으로 적극 수사하고 삭제·차단 요청도 병행할 예정”이라고 했다.

이재명 대통령은 전날 수석보좌관 회의에서 “5·18 북한군 개입설 같은 악의적 가짜뉴스, 또 국가 폭력 범죄를 미화하거나 그 피해자들을 모욕하는 행위에 대해서는 가용한 모든 수단을 동원해서 강력하게 응징해야 한다”고 말했다. 이에 경찰이 즉각 대응에 나선 것이다.

한편 서울경찰청 공공범죄수사대는 이날 스타벅스 ‘탱크 데이’ 이벤트 논란으로 정용진 신세계그룹 회장을 고발한 시민단체 서민민생대책위원회 김순환 사무총장을 불러 고발 경위 등을 조사했다.

SEOUL, May 22 (Yonhap) -- Police said Friday they were investigating fake news posted online mocking the 1980 democracy uprising in the southwestern city of Gwangju by claiming the movement was orchestrated by North Korea.

The National Office of Investigation launched the probe after an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated newspaper clip dated May 20, 1980, surfaced online with the headline that spies who received instructions from Pyongyang had seized weapons and attacked troops enforcing martial law.

On May 18, 1980, citizens gathered to stand up against a military junta led by then Gen. Chun Doo-hwan in Gwangju, who sent troops to the city to brutally crack down on civilians. Chun ultimately seized power through a military coup.

"We will proactively investigate fake news spreading through social media platforms regarding the May 18 democracy movement without tolerance and request the deletion and blocking of such posts," the office said.

"The police will take stern measures against the spread of disinformation to ensure the spirit of the May 18 democracy movement is not tarnished," it added.
Earlier this week, Starbucks Korea, operated by retail conglomerate Shinsegae, drew public outrage after launching a coffee tumbler promotion featuring the word "tank," which coincided with the anniversary of the democracy uprising.

While the marketing campaign was scrapped within hours of its launch, President Lee Jae Myung strongly criticized the promotion on Monday.
Lee called the campaign "inhumane behavior by lowly profiteers" that undermined the country's core values of human rights and democracy, while calling for those involved in the marketing campaign to be held accountable.
