They're all gone now, all except for Mike Bibby, who is the only remaining member of the Sacramento Kings team that took the Los Angeles Lakers to overtime in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals just over 3½ years ago before falling flat in the biggest five minutes of their careers.
Vlade Divac departed as a free agent, while Chris Webber, Doug Christie, Bobby Jackson and Hedo Turkoglu all were traded prior to Peja Stojakovic's departure for Indiana.
Bibby has an opt-out clause in his $62.5 million contract, and he can get out of the final two years of the deal if he so chooses in the summer of 2007.
He'd be giving up $28 million in guaranteed money and joining a free-agent class that could include Dirk Nowitzki, Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, Rashard Lewis and Chauncey Billups. But it's a safe bet to assume there would be plenty of teams lining up to give one of the league's top point guards a new five-year contract that would take him to age 34.
"I'm going to see how it turns out," Bibby said Friday following the Kings' morning shootaround prior to their game against the Boston Celtics. "Nothing's happened yet. He [Artest] hasn't played yet, so we'll see how it goes. There's a lot of time left; I'm not worried about that. I'm just trying to work us into the playoffs first."
Sacramento was still uncertain whether Artest would play against the Celtics, the decision out of their hands as they awaited word on whether Stojakovic would make it to Indiana by 6 p.m. to satisfy the 48-hour reporting rule. If Stojakovic was delayed and the Pacers kept the deal from being finalized, Artest's debut won't come until Sunday at Toronto.
The Celtics were also waiting to see whether they'd be available to use newcomers Wally Szczerbiak and Michael Olowokandi against Sacramento after they were acquired late Thursday night in a seven-player swap including Ricky Davis, Mark Blount, Justin Reed and Marcus Banks. Their availability hinged on whether all the main players reported to their new teams prior to tip-off.

Bibby and a few of the other Kings players went out to dinner Thursday night with Artest after he joined the team in New York and flew with them to Boston for the fifth stop of a six-game road trip that has been as momentous as anything the Kings have been through in years. The Stojakovic trade was the third major deal made by Sacramento in the past calendar year, but the sideshow dynamic of the player the Kings acquired in this deal made the others pale by comparison.
Sacramento center Brad Miller, a teammate of Artest's in Chicago who went with him to Indiana in the trade that sent Jalen Rose to the Bulls, has been approached by a few members of the Kings looking to take his temperature on what Artest is really like.
They'd seen the tape of Artest dashing into the stands at The Palace and smashing a television camera at Madison Square Garden, and they'd heard the strange tales of Artest applying for a job at an electronics store (so he could get the employee discount) when he was a rookie with the Bulls, asking for time off from the Pacers in order to promote his record label, and smashing Michael Jordan's ribs at a summer workout at Hoops the Gym in Chicago.
"I think people that actually played with him know he's a nice guy, real quiet, but also how hard he goes on the court," said Miller, who offered Artest help in finding a real-estate agent for his relocation to Sacramento.
Miller skipped the dinner with Artest and took in a Boston Bruins' game instead, letting a few of his teammates get a reading of their own.
"It was cool. He isn't the problem everybody thinks he is. He's a nice guy," said Bibby, whose wait-and-see attitude will be affected not only by Artest's ability to blend but also by his own tolerance for the fishbowl existence that comes with being one of the few celebrity presences in a small city with only one major professional sports team.
Bibby has already grown weary of the attention his sizeable entourage, nicknamed "Team Dime," has been receiving in equal amounts from Sacramento's gossipmongers and law-enforcement officers. There are already a couple of nightlife establishments in Sacramento where Bibby and his people are no longer welcome following a pair of nasty bar fights in mid-September, and Bibby -- despite being cleared of any wrongdoing by the Sacramento District Attorney's office -- has resented the troublemaker label that's been affixed to him through the transgressions of those close to him.
It didn't help his image when police awoke a sleeping driver who then led them on a high-speed chase that ended when the driver's car was disabled by a tack strip placed across the road by the California Highway Patrol. Officers discovered a video camera in the car -- and when they played the tape to look for evidence of crimes, they found footage of Bibby, who had allowed the man and a few friends to come to his house and shoot scenes for a rap video.
That type of guilt by association has worn thin with Bibby, and chances are it won't take much more for him to decide it's time for a new start elsewhere. If the Artest move backfires and the Kings end up a West Coast version of the Pacers, with one dysfunctional player upsetting the entire equation, look for Bibby to be the next, and last, member of that 2002 Kings team to wind up wearing someone else's uniform.
