흔히 볼 수 있는 책자 형태의 기존 논문과 완전히 다르게 10m 길이로 가로로 쭉 펼쳐진 한지 두루마리에 논문이 담겨 있었다. 한자리에서 끝까지 읽을 수도, 빠르게 넘길 수도 없다.

이 교수의 박사 논문 ‘빈 정원(Empty Garden)’은 조선 시대 문인들의 의원(意園·상상의 정원)을 자연과 인공의 ‘경계(境界) 공간’으로 주목하고, 디지털 기술 시대 인간의 감각과 사유를 탐구한 결과물이다. 이 교수는 “정원의 ‘거닐기’를 자연스럽게 체험하게 하는 방법을 궁리하다, 논문을 가로 10m 두루마리 한지에 쓰는 아이디어가 떠올랐다”고 했다. 이 논문은 예술도 스마트폰으로 한눈에 빠르게 소비하는 시대에 ‘몸의 경험과 사유의 깊이는 점점 얕아진다’는 화두를 던졌다. 그는 “AI(인공지능) 시대에 인간이 ‘느끼고 생각하는 존재’로 과연 남을 수 있을까 고민”이라며 “공기처럼 AI가 피할 수 없는 존재가 될수록 인간 고유성이 무엇인지 묻는 질문이 더 중요해진다”고 말했다.

KAIST 사상 처음으로 미술가 출신 전임교수로 임용된 그는 ‘학위 수집가’라는 얘기를 들을 정도로 이력이 독특하다. 서울대 경영학과를 졸업한 뒤 같은 학교 미대 조소과에 편입해 학·석사를 마쳤고, 영국 왕립예술대학(RCA)에서 석사, 옥스퍼드대에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 찰스 디킨스, 스티븐 호킹 등이 거쳐 간 ‘영국 왕립예술학회’ 석학 회원으로도 선정됐다.

그는 AI 시대 데이터를 단순히 저장·통제의 대상으로 볼 것이 아니라, 정원을 가꾸듯 천천히 다루고 경험하면서 인간의 감각과 사유를 회복해야 한다는 ‘데이터 가드닝(Data Gardening)’ 개념을 제안했다. 효율과 속도를 최우선으로 하는 시대에 대한 일종의 저항인 셈이다.

이 교수는 “우리가 망설이고, 천천히 움직이고, 비효율적으로 느끼는 것들이 오히려 인간다운 요소일 수 있다”며 “이제는 다시 ‘몸의 시대’로 돌아가야 한다”고 말했다.

After graduating from Seoul National University’s College of Business Administration, he transferred to the same university’s College of Fine Arts, Sculpture Department, where he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He then earned a master’s from the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the UK and a doctoral degree from the University of Oxford. He was also selected as a senior member of the Royal Society of Arts, an institution that has been associated with figures like Charles Dickens and Stephen Hawking.
