POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS, The Epiphany of the Lord, Saint Peter's Square, Sunday, 5 January 2025

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! And well done, you are brave, with the rain! Today the Gospel (cf. Jn 1:1-18), talking to us about Jesus, Word incarnate, tells us that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (Jn 1:5). It reminds us, then, how powerful is God's love, which is not overcome by anything and which, despite obstacles and rejections, continues to shine and illuminate our path.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다. 잘 오셨습니다. 비 오는데 용감하십니다. 오늘 복음 (요한복음 1:1-18 참조) 은 육화하신 말씀이신 예수님께 대해 얘기하면서 “그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치고 있지만 어둠은 그를 깨닫지 못하였다.” (요한 1,5) 라고 말합니다. 그것은 하느님의 사랑이 얼마나 강력한지, 어떤 것도 하느님의 사랑을 이기지 못하는지, 장애물들과 거부에도 불구하고 하느님의 사랑은 계속해서 빛을 비추고 우리의 길을 밝힌다는 것을 상기시킵니다.

We see it at Christmas, when the Son of God, made man, overcomes so many walls and so many divisions. He confronts the closed minds and hearts of the “great” of His time, who are concerned more with defending power than seeking the Lord (cf. Mt 2:3-18). Then, he shares the humble life of Mary and Joseph, who welcome Him and raise Him with love, but with the limited possibilities and the hardships of those without means: they were poor. He offers Himself, fragile and defenceless, to the encounter with the shepherds (cf. Lk 2:8-18), men whose hearts are marked by the harshness of life and the disdain of society; and then with the Magi (cf. Mt 2:1) who, driven by the desire to know Him, face a long journey and find Him in a home of ordinary people, in great poverty.

우리는 그것을 크리스마스 때에, 사람이 되신 하느님의 아드님께서 수많은 장벽과 분열을 극복하실 때에 봅니다. 그분께서는 그 당시의 “위대하다”하는 사람들의 닫친 생각과 마음에 맞서십니다. 그 사람들은 주님을 찾기보다는 권력을 방어하는데 열중합니다. (마태오 2,3-18 참조) 그리고 그분은 마리아와 요셉의 겸손한 삶을 공유하십니다. 마리아와 요셉은 그분을 환영하고 사랑으로 키우지만 가난하기 때문에 가난한 사람들의 제한된 가능성과 어려움을 겪습니다. 그들은 가난하였습니다. 그분께서는 연약하고 방어력이 없는 자신을 목자들과의 만남과 (루카 2,8-18 참조) 동방박사들과의 만남에 (마태 2,1 참조) 제시하십니다.  목자들의 마음은 삶의 가혹함과 사회의 경멸로 특징지어집니다. 그리고 동방박사들은 그분을 알고자 하는 열망에 이끌려 긴 여정을 거쳐 아주 가난한 보통사람들의 가정에서 그분을 발견합니다.

Faced with these and many other challenges, which seem contradictions, God never stops – let us listen to this clearly, God never stops. He finds a thousand ways to reach everyone, each and every one of us, wherever we are, without calculation and without conditions, opening even in the darkest nights of humanity windows of light that the darkness cannot obscure (cf. Is 9:1-6). It is a reality that consoles us and encourages us, especially in a time such as ours, a time that is not easy, where there is a great need for light, for hope, and a need for peace, a world where men at times create situations so complicated that it seems impossible to get out of them. It seems impossible to get out of them, from many situations.

모순처럼 보이는 이러한 어려움과 다른 많은 도전들에 직면하여, 하느님께서는 결코 멈추지 않으십니다. - 이것을 명심하십시오. 하느님께서는 절대로 멈추지 않으십니다. 그분께서는 모든 사람에게, 우리 각자, 한 사람 한 사람에게 도달하는 수많은 방법을 찾으십니다. 우리가 어디에 있든지, 계산하지 않으시고, 아무 조건 없이, 인간의 가장 어두운 밤에도, 어둠이 가릴 수 없는 빛의 창문을 여시고 우리에게 오십니다. (이사야 9:1-6 참조) 그것은 우리를 위로하고 격려하는 실제 상황입니다. 특히 우리의 시대와 같은 시대에, 쉽지 않은 시대, 빛과 희망이 절실히 필요한 시대, 평화가 필요한 시대, 그리고 사람들이 때때로 상황을 너무 복잡하게 만들어서 그 상황에서 벗어나는 것이 불가능해 보이는 세상에, 우리에게 위로와 격려가 됩니다. 많은 상황에서 벗어나는 것이 불가능해 보입니다.

But today the Word of God tells us that it is not so! Rather, it calls us to imitate the God of love, opening up glimmers of light wherever we can, with whomever we meet, in any context: family, social, international. It invites us not to fear taking the first step – this is the Lord’s invitation today – not to fear taking the first step. It takes courage to do it, but let us not be afraid to throw open bright windows of closeness to those who are suffering, of forgiveness, of compassion and reconciliation: these are the many first steps we must take to make the journey clearer, safer and possible for all. And this invitation resounds in a particular way in the Jubilee Year that has just begun, urging us to be messengers of hope with a simple but concrete “yes” to life, with choices that bring life. Let us do this, all of us, this: this is the way of salvation!

하지만 오늘 하느님의 말씀은 그것은 그렇지 않다고 하십니다. 오히려 하느님의 사랑을 본받아 우리가 할 수 있는 모든 곳에서, 우리가 만나는 사람이 누구든지 간에, 가족, 사회적, 국제적으로 만나는 사람들과 깜빡이는 빛을 열라고 하십니다. 우리에게 첫 걸음을 떼는 것을 두려워하지 말라고 하십니다. - 이것은 오늘 주님의 초대입니다. - 첫걸음을 떼는 것을 두려워하지 마십시오. 용기가 필요하지만 우리 모두 고통 받는 사람들에게 친밀함의, 용서의, 연민과 화해의 밝은 창문을 활짝 여는 것을 두려워하지 맙시다. 이것들은 여정을 더 명확하고, 더 안전하고, 모든 사람에게 가능하도록 하기 위해 우리가 디뎌야 할 많은 첫걸음들입니다. 그리고 이 초대는 이제 시작된 희년에 우리에게 생명을 향해 단순하지만 구체적인 “yes"를 함으로써, 그리고 생명을 가져오는 선택들을 함으로써, 희망의 메신저들이 되라고 다그치며 특정한 방식으로 울려 퍼집니다. 우리 모두 이것을 합시다. 이것이 구원의 길입니다!

And so, at the beginning of a new year, we can ask ourselves: how can I open a window of light in my environment and in my relationships? Where can I be a glimmer of light that lets God’s love pass through? What is the first step I should take today? May Mary, star that leads to Jesus, help us to be shining witnesses of the Father’s love for everyone.

그래서 새해의 벽두에 자문할 수 있습니다. 나는 어떻게 나의 환경과 나의 관계성에서 빛의 창문을 알 수 있나? 나는 어디에서 하느님 사랑을 통과시키는 깜박이는 빛이 될 수 있나? 오늘 내가 디뎌야 할 첫 걸음은 무엇인가? 예수님께 인도하는 별이신 성모 마리아여, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 모든 사람에게 아버지의 사랑의 빛나는 증인이 되게 하소서!

After the Angelus

Dear brothers and sisters! I greet you all, faithful of Rome and pilgrims from various countries. I greet in particular the religion teachers of the archdiocese of Zagreb. Dear friends, I wish you all the best in your work, which is very important for the cultural, spiritual and moral formation of the new generations.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분! 로마의 신자들과 여러 나라의 순례자 여러분 모두에게 인사드립니다. 특히 자그레브 대교구의 종교 교사들에게 인사드립니다. 사랑하는 친구 여러분, 새로운 세대의 문화적, 영적, 도덕적 형성에 매우 중요한 여러분의 일에 최선을 다하시길 바랍니다.

I greet the faithful of Orzinuovi, the families of Massa Lombarda, the ministrants and pastoral workers of Postioma and Porcellengo, the young people of the “Franciscan Fraternity of Bethany” and the young people of Concesio, the birthplace of Saint Paul VI, and the young people of the Immacolata. I greet the group of teenagers from the deanery of Oggiono in the province of Lecce, on a pilgrimage for the Jubilee.

저는 오르지누오비의 신자들, 마사 롬바르다의 가족들, 포스티오마와 포르첼렌고의 성직자와 사목 종사자들, "베타니의 프란치스칸 형제회"의 젊은이들, 성 바오로 6세의 출생지인 콘체시오의 젊은이들, 그리고 임마콜라타의 젊은이들에게 인사드립니다. 희년 순례 중인 레체 지방의 오기오노 교구에서 온 청소년 그룹에게 인사드립니다.

And let us continue to pray for peace, in Ukraine, in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Myanmar, and Sudan. May the international community act firmly so that humanitarian law is respected in conflicts. No more striking schools, hospitals; no more hitting workplaces! Let us not forget that war is always a defeat, always!

그리고 우크라이나, 팔레스타인, 이스라엘, 레바논, 시리아, 미얀마, 수단의 평화를 위해 계속 기도합시다. 국제 사회가 단호하게 행동하여, 갈등에서 인도주의 법을 존중하게 되기를 바랍니다. 더 이상의 학교와 병원의 폭격과 작업장의 공격이 없도록 합시다. 전쟁은 항상 패배라는 것을 잊지 맙시다. 항상 패배입니다!
