The를 무조건 '디'라 발음하면 어떤 뜻이 되는 걸까?

 자음(닿소리)으로 시작되는 단어 앞에 오는 the는 '더'라 읽고 모음(홑소리)으로 시작되는 단어 앞에 the는  '디'라고 발음 한다는 원칙은 누구나 아 아는 문법 상식입니다.

그러나 the 다음에 어느 단어가 자음으로 시작하든 모음으로 시작하든 무조건 '디'라고 발음하면  the다음에 오는 단어가 특별한 의미를 가지게 된다는 사실을 아는 사람은 그리 많지 않다고 생각합니다.

예를 들어  'This is the place to enjoy Korean meals.(디스 이즈 디 플레이스 투 엔조이 코리언 미일즈)는 '한국 음식을 제대로 하는 곳은 여기 뿐이다'라는
뜻이 됩니다. 즉 the를 '더'라고 발음하지 않고 '디'라고 크게, 그리고 좀 길게 발음했기 때문에 the place가 단순히 장소란 뜻이 아니라 '바로 이곳' 정도의 뜻이 되는 것입니다.
 

 그리고 사람 이름앞에 the를 크게 그리고 길게 '디~'라고 발음하면 그 뜻은 '저 유명한'이 됩니다.
the는 한글로 '더'또는 '디'라고 표기할 수 밖에 없지만, 실제발음은 약간 까다롭습니다. 혀끝을 위쪽 앞니에 살짝 닿게 하면서 '더' 도는 '디'라고 소리를 내면 비교적 정확한 the발음이 된답니다.

여기서 잠깐,

the의 경우,스펠링(철자)과 상관 없이, the바로 다음에 오는 단어가 자음 발음이 되면[더],
모음 발음으로 시작되면[디]라고 소리 냅니다.
예를 들어, MP3의 철자는 M(자음)으로 시작하지만,
M을 읽는 발음의 첫소리는 [em]에서 [e]라고 모음의 소리를 내므로
the MP3는 /디/로 발음한답니다.
이렇게 발음하는 것은 뒤에 모음이 올 때 [더]보다는
[디]로 발음하는 편이 더 편하게 발음이 되기 때문이랍니다.
