The Avatamsaka Sutra, The Ten Abodes (십주품 24-4)

[眞如華]

     24-4.

     欲以一毛滴海水      一切大海悉令竭

     而悉分別知其數      菩薩以此初發心

     하나의 털끝으로 바닷물을 찍어내어

     모든 바닷물을 다하게 하여

     그러한 숫자를 모두 알고자

     보살이 이를 위해 처음으로 발심하였네.

Wanting to take drops from the ocean on a hair

So as to dry up all the oceans

While specially knowing the number of drops,

Therefore do enlightening beings rouse their aspiration.

to take drops from the ocean

; 바닷물을 찍어내어

on a hair; 하나의 털끝으로

So as to dry up; 다하게 하여

all the oceans; 모든 바닷물을

Wanting ~ While specially knowing

; 모두 알고자

the number of drops; 그러한 숫자를

Therefore do ~ rouse their aspiration

; 이를 위해 처음으로 발심하였네

enlightening beings; 보살이
