Carter Opts Out Of His Contract

The former Knicks executive who is suing Isiah Thomas for sexual harassment alleged in court papers that Thomas urged a cheerleader to flirt with referees and guard Stephon Marbury cursed at her, according to newspaper reports Saturday. Anucha Browne Sanders, a former senior vice president of marketing and business operations, filed documents to answer the Knicks' attempt to have her lawsuit dismissed. In the papers, which were unsealed Friday, Browne Sanders alleges cheerleader Petra Pope told her that Thomas encouraged Pope to flirt with officials before a game against the Nets in 2004, the Daily News reported. "What she told me was that Isiah asked her to go into the referees' locker room and make them happy," Browne Sanders testified. She also claimed in the documents that Marbury directed an obscenity at her after she complained about the player's cousin -- who was also employed by the team -- had made graphic sexual comments to her staff, the Daily News reported. Presti Looking To Keep Rashard
Seattle Post-Intellegencer - 06/30 - 11:30 AM EST
Sonics general manager Sam Presti said the organization is serious about re-signing small forward Rashard Lewis and Lewis' representatives appear serious about listening to the Sonics' sales pitch. Lewis' agent, Tony Dutt, said Friday that he has a meeting scheduled with the Sonics in Houston on Sunday, the first official day of free agency. Dutt said he will meet with Lewis on Saturday to discuss the Sonics' future, the trade of Ray Allen and Lewis' potential role with the team. The trade of Allen to Boston allows the Sonics more salary flexibility to re-sign Lewis, who opted out of the final two years and $21 million of his contract. The Sonics can offer Lewis a six-year deal for the league maximum for a player with nine years' service time, estimated to start at $15 million per season. [READ]

Indianapolis Star - 06/30 - 11:28 AM EST
The Pacers' will attempt to improve starting Sunday when the free agency period begins. Contracts can be signed starting July 11. The Pacers don't have enough cap space to sign an expensive free agent. They have their midlevel exception, which is more than $5 million, and a $4 million trade exception acquired during the eight-player deal with Golden State. "After the draft, everybody looks at their team and they say, 'I need this, I need that,' " Pacers president Larry Bird said. "Now it will start heating up and we'll see what we can do. I expect us to be very active to find the guys coach O'Brien feels he needs for this team. Rick played a different style. We tried to get his type of players. We have a new coach now, so we're going to try and get his style (of players)." Finding an outside shooter, a backup point guard and settling Jermaine O'Neal's future are priorities. It seems the Pacers are interested in the likes of Kareem Rush, Jason Kapono, Earl Boykins, Steve Blake, Chucky Atkins, and Tony Delk. [READ]
Wittman Expects To Coach Garnett Next Season
Minnesota Star Tribune - 06/30 - 11:25 AM EST
Both Corey Brewer and Chris Richard talked Friday about how much they are looking forward to playing with Kevin Garnett. Timberwolves coach Randy Wittman is hoping the same thing. Actually, he's planning on it. The trade rumors surrounding Garnett swirled right up to the draft Thursday. Then they paused, if only for a moment, then got started again Friday. Perhaps Golden State is in the mix. Maybe Dallas is preparing for a run. Wittman, though, is operating as though Garnett will be in a Wolves uniform come October. "Right now, I have to as a coach," Wittman said. "That's why I'm going to summer league trying to put these guys in position as if Kevin is on the team, how I would use these guys in accordance to him." [READ]
Bucks Hope To Achieve Yi Harmony
Milwaukee Journal Sentinal - 06/30 - 11:22 AM EST
General manager Larry Harris insisted that he gave fair warning to the Yi Jianlian camp before the Milwaukee Bucks made the Chinese power forward the sixth overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday night. And Harris expects the 7-foot Yi to be in a Bucks uniform next season, although no confirmation came from Yi's representatives Friday. Yi's agent, Dan Fegan, did not return calls seeking comment. "There were teams that didn't get in there, for whatever reason," Harris said of being denied the chance to conduct a private workout for the Chinese star in Los Angeles. "But his people knew that we could take him. We've been telling him (Fegan) we were going to take the best player. "They knew that. It's not a shock to them. It may be a shock to Yi himself." It would seem Jeff Green had better become accustomed to standing in Kevin Durant's shadow. "I don't need the spotlight," said Green, who described himself as laid-back and easy-going. "I don't need it at all. I can go out and still play 40-plus minutes and do what I can to help my team to win. As long as my team wins." During three seasons at Georgetown, Green did a little bit of everything for the Hoyas. He ranks 17th in scoring, 16th in rebounding and 12th in assists on the school's all-time lists. [READ]
Colangelo Says Raptors Want To Be Active In Free Agency
Toronto Star - 06/30 - 6:16 AM EST
The NBA free agency season is more about selling than buying and Bryan Colangelo and his merry band of cohorts will be in full-on schmooze mode late tonight, the Toronto Star is reporting. They will have phones at the ready and speeches all prepared, they may have trinkets like personalized highlight videos and books ready to lay on the players they most covet among the 10 or so they've identified as priorities. "We want to be active, we want to try to move quickly in terms of reaching out to various free agents," Colangelo said of the negotiating period that begins a minute after midnight tonight. The general manager has narrowed down his list of possible additions to 10 or so, he said. It's no secret that Orlando's Grant Hill is among those high on that list. Colangelo isn't giving away any secrets on who he covets most except to say he's got his priorities set. "Sometimes in free agency you have to over-pay and we're willing to over-pay if we feel like we're going to get the right player," he said. "What we keep talking about is consistency at the small forward position, but we want to add the best possible player." [READ]
Arizona Republic - 06/30 - 6:11 AM EST
Now that it is clear that Kevin Garnett will not be in Arizona, the Phoenix Suns are shifting their attention to trying to lure Grant Hill to the desert, the Arizona Republic is reporting. The Suns will try to sell Hill on the lovely weather, team chemistry, relaxed practices and friendly atmosphere, but will have only a veteranâ?歟?s minimum contract to put on the table ($1.2 million, $770,610 which would count against the cap). Other teams can offer a lot more money (Toronto, Orlando) while others can offer more than the Suns and offer a similar or better chance at success (Detroit, San Antonio). Hill has let Phoenix know for years he was interested in playing here. Sources confirm he was in the Valley last weekend, although both sides swear there was no contact between player and team. When asked if he felt the Suns or the Spurs were a better fit, Hill told ESPN radio heâ?歟?d choose the Suns. [READ]
Sixers' Efforts To Procure Yi Came Up Short
Philadelphia Inquirer - 06/30 - 6:08 AM EST
During predraft workouts, the 76ers never hid their affection for 6-foot-11 Chinese power forward Yi Jianlian. And on draft night, the team apparently made an all-out effort to acquire him. Billy King, the Sixers' president and general manager, said after Thursday's draft that he was close to a deal with a team in the top seven. A source yesterday revealed that the team was Milwaukee. The player the Sixers were looking to move up to draft was Yi, who was taken at No. 6 by the Bucks. King preferred not to address the issue yesterday, but on draft night, Bucks general manager Larry Harris acknowledged having talked with the Sixers. "We had a lot of discussions with Philadelphia as well as other discussions," Harris said. "At the end of the day, we really felt like instead of moving back and doing some other things that this was the best decision for us." The Sixers, according to a person familiar with the dealings, offered different scenarios - some with just draft picks, the 12th and 21st in the first round, and some with current players. [READ]
Dad Says Son Is OK, But JR Smith No-Show At Event JR
Rocky Mountain News - 06/30 - 6:05 AM EST
J.R Smith's left shoulder is fine, but the Nuggets guard hasn't played basketball since he was involved in a June 9 car accident, his father, Earl Smith Sr., said Friday. Smith walked away from the accident with an injured left shoulder, but his best friend was killed. Smith, 21, didn't show Friday morning at Lakewood Country Club for the J.R. Smith Youth Foundation Golf Outing, which helps provide academic scholarships. The tournament was the first benefit golf event for Smith's foundation. Although Smith was a no- show, his father arrived at 7:30 a.m. and spoke on behalf of his son. Smith's mother, Ida Smith, also was in attendance. "Physically, he's fine," the elder Smith said. Allen: "No Hard Feelings" On Trade
Seattle Times - 06/30 - 6:03 AM EST
The Sonics referenced Ray Allen's age and his recent ankle injuries to explain why they dealt him to the Boston Celtics for guard Delonte West, forward Wally Szczerbiak and the No. 5 pick in Thursday's NBA draft, which they used to select Georgetown forward Jeff Green. They failed to mention that the seven-time All-Star guard is due $52 million over the next three years, but his salary is believed to have played a large part in their decision-making, according to the Seattle Times. Whatever the reason, Allen doesn't hold a grudge. "There's no hard feelings, not at all," he said. "Like anything else, this just closes a chapter in my career here. I just have to move forward and worry about what I need to do. It's over with here. It doesn't surprise me. "Regardless of the time I spent with [owner] Clay Bennett or what I may have done for this team, there's no loyalties in this business. With [general manager] Sam Presti coming in from San Antonio, he's trying to make his mark, and I'm pretty sure that if Rick Sund were at the helm, there would have been a different decision." Little Chance Draft Picks Will Be With Spurs Next Season 스퍼스의 두 신인 스플리터와 윌리암스는 일단 다음 시즌에는 NBA에서 볼 수 없을 것 같다는군요.
San Antonio Express-News - 06/30 - 5:35 AM EST
The Spurs took Tiago Splitter, a 6-foot-11 center-forward from Brazil, with the 28th pick in the first round of Thursday's NBA draft. Five spots later, in the second round, they selected Marcus Williams, a 6-7 forward from Arizona. Neither figures to be to be on the roster next season. Splitter is under contract to Tau Cerámica of the Spanish League for the 2007-08 season and has a hefty buyout clause that effectively prevents the Spurs from even considering bringing him to training camp. Williams may be in Spurs training camp, but likely will spend the regular season with the Austin Toros, the National Basketball Development League team the Spurs are in the process of buying. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had hip replacement surgery Friday. Cuban is expected to remain in the hospital for 2-3 days after having his left hip replaced. Cuban will have to use crutches to get around for about three weeks after that. Team officials said the 48-year-old Cuban is expected to make a full recovery, and that the replacement will not prevent him from doing his regular activities. Cuban said during the NBA draft Thursday night that he'd still be able to play basketball after getting his hip replaced. [READ]
Heat's Riley Expects Zo Will Be Back
Miami Herald - 06/30 - 5:26 AM EST
Heat president and coach Pat Riley isn't ready to publicly commit to a return to the bench next season, but he believes one of his most productive players off that bench will be back for another year. Riley said Friday that reserve center Alonzo Mourning will likely put off retirement and return for a 14th season in the league. Mourning, a seven-time All-Star and two-time NBA defensive player of the year, said after the season that he was not certain if he would play next season. Mourning has a $2.7 million option to play next season, and his 2007-08 salary would become guaranteed Aug. 10. Riley, speaking with reporters at length for the first time since the Heat was eliminated in the playoffs, said Mourning would soon announce his plans. ''I have a good feeling about Alonzo, so I'm going to allow him to obviously make that decision,'' Riley said shortly after a Heat press conference at AmericanAirlines Arena to introduce first-round draft pick Daequan Cook. ``But I have a good feeling that he'll be back.'' Mavericks forward Devean George elected to become an unrestricted free agent on Sunday, the day 2007-08 contracts kick in. The Mavericks were alerted by George's agent, Mark Bartelstein, that the 6-8 swingman would forego the second year of the contract he signed with the Mavericks last summer. He would have earned $2.16 million next season. Instead, he is free to sign with any team, including the Mavericks. His agent told the Mavs that George enjoyed his season in Dallas and there's a good chance he will return. But George felt compelled to test the open market. [READ] |
