[틈틈이 영어공부] we should put all of our cards on the table
- 영영 : you deal with a situation by speaking openly about your feelings, ideas, or plans.
- 동일 : lay(lay down, place) one's cards on the table
Time to put your cards on the table.
So I suggest you put your cards on the table.
===========================================
Nick and Denny are talking in the office.
Nick: Denny do you have a few minutes?
Denny: Sure. What’s on your mind?
Nick: We’ve got a meeting tomorrow to negotiate a contract with a new customer.
Denny: Terrific. What do you want to talk about?
Nick: We need to decide how we want to conduct our negotiation.
Denny: Well obviously we should put all of our cards on the table right away.
Nick: No that would be naive. We’ve got to feel them out to see what their negotiating limits are.
Denny: I see. We need to know what their bottom line is.
Nick: Yeah. Then we’ll know how far we can push them.
Denny: And they will be doing the same thing to us.
▶ what’s on your mind?: 무슨 생각해요?
“I can usually tell what’s on his mind.”
“Before I ask her for a date I’m going to feel her out to see if she’s interested.”
“His bottom line is unacceptable so we can’t make the deal.”
