후기(Epilogue)
Kant(1724-1804), in his <Critique of Pure Reason>, shows that pure reason can be applied to the limit of experience. He says that, if it goes beyond the limit of experience, it shows dogma which cannot give experiential content. His antinomy proves that pure reason can draw the opposite conclusions in the case that it is applied to a proposition that is beyond the limit of experience. Thus, he asserts that not pure reason but practical reason has to be dealt with in the realm of beyond experience. This is the tenet of his critical philosophy. He deals with the traditional metaphysics from a critical perspective.
그는 누구나 지켜야 할 도덕률로 실천이성을 확립하고서 <Religion within the Limits of Reason Alone>을 씁니다. 여기서 reason(이성)은 물론 practical reason(실천 이성)을 뜻합니다.
Kant builds up the moral code in terms of practical reason. Unlike Aristotle's morality that encourages the pursuit of individual virtue, Kant's morality is advocated in terms of the principle of practice by the categorical imperative. To Kant, morals is the moral code that everyone has to keep. After he establishes practical reason as the moral code that everyone has to keep, he writes <Religion within the Limits of Reason alone>. Here, "reason", of course, is practical reason. He asserts that religion has to be dealt with for practical reasons. According to him, the Bible has to be interpreted not into the metaphysical content but into the moral code.
Schleiermacher(1768-1834) advocates religiosity which is different from intellectuality or morality. He asserts that an individual has a feeling of absolute dependence as religiosity. Thus, according to him, an individual has religiosity as well as intellectuality and morality as his property. His religiosity is generated as one of the mainstreams of 19th century romanticism. His theology is the outcome of his interpretation of the Bible on the basis of religiosity. Thus, his theology is called liberal theology, compared to traditional orthodox theology. His religiosity is reflected in the writings of Leo Tolstoi and Uchimura Kanzo.
The intellectual theology that has been established in terms of transcendentality(Augustin) or metaphysics(Aquinas) since the medieval times is challenged by Kant's morality or reassessed by Schleiermacher's religiosity. This tendency is only relevant to the protestant theology. Catholic theology has maintained medieval theology. As long as a theology is established by pure reason that Kant mentioned, it has to entail the presupposition that can handle his critique of pure reason.
It cannot be the mainstream of theology to deal with theology in terms of morality or religiosity, for the basic intellectuality has been succeeded from Greek philosophy by (pure) reason. Theologians, at any rate, want to generate their theology in terms of (pure) reason, overcoming the problem that Kant raised.
Barth(1886–1968) sees that the problem of Kant's antinomy that is encountered in the realm of beyond experience may be resolved as either side of an antinomy is accepted as a dogma. One of the contradicting conclusions may be accepted as a dogma from which doctrines can be generated. The church proclaims faith in terms of dogmas. The contents of faith that the church tells is not based on experience, they cannot but be dogmas. Even if faith is proclaimed in terms of doctrines, i.e., dogmas, what generates dogmas is (pure) reason. Dogmas do not contain morality or religiosity. This is the reason that Barth writes his theology as <Church Dogmatics>.
Tillich(1886–1965) wants to generate existential theology which is based on human existence rather than dogmatic theology which is based on the church. He introduces correlation of the form of God's answer to human existential questions ontologically. In the respect that His answer comes from Him, he prevents human pursuit from going beyond the limit of experience that Kant brought in. He sees that what human pursues remains in the limit of experience, and what goes over the limit from human experience comes from His answer. For this reason, his correlation remains as a schema. As His answer cannot be intellectual, it has to be Spiritual. But it is not proper to assert that Spiritual answer is to be given to an intellectual question. And his correlation departs from the basic setting of the Bible.
The problem of orthodoxy and heterodoxy in the tradition of the church means that, while a certain dogma is accepted as orthodoxy, others are subjected to heterodoxy. The problem of orthodoxy and heterodoxy that has been raised from medieval theology and the conflict of theism and atheism cannot be resolved since all of them are directed by their own dogma. This is clearly shown by Kant in his critique. The problem that cannot be resolved in the realm of human experience cannot but be led into conflict of dogmas. It is not wishful for the church to be settled as a delivery of dogma in the world.
Hegel(1770-1831) aggravates the ideological diversion by pure reason of which Kant set its limit in his critical philosophy, absolutizing it. Although Hegel introduces the dialectics of thesis-antithesis-synthesis as a schema, synthesis of thesis and antithesis cannot be the property which is entailed in reason. Modern life is driven into ideological conflict; likewise, the church which proclaims dogma cannot but be settled in the conflict of dogmas. Thus, it shows not only religious conflict but ideological conflict. When the limit of experience is passed over in terms of (pure) reason, dogma or ideology comes to appear.
Christianity is linguistic. This is not to be heard easily. Man's word is used to indicate what is in the world or to describe its property. Thus, it is accompanied by what is or what occurs in the world. It, at any rate, expands on the basis of what exists in the world mythologically or religiously. But since the Bible as God's word narrates what is fulfilled, it is generated under the presupposition of the priority of its words. Since it is not to be encountered linguistically, it comes to be understood intellectually, morally, or religiously.
It reflects the priority of language to affirm that the Bible is God's word. Since it is narrated in fulfillment, it is wholly called His word. It is narrated as the fulfillment of the covenant life of His being together with His people. It is not for indicating what is or what occurs in the world. Therefore, it is not proper to express that the Bible is factual, for the basic perspective of the Bible is directed not to existent but to fulfillment. The fulfillment of God's word cannot be discussed without granting the priority of His word.
As Christianity became the national religion of the Roman Empire, the church came to be a national institute. Thus, as the Bible was taken charge of by the institute of the church, its original linguistic priority came to be lost, for it could not be the covenant language of being together with God. The covenant people were fulfilled with the covenant language; however, the citizens of the Roman Empire were not the covenant people. Since they were not fulfilled into the covenant people of being together with God, they did not carry the content that would be fulfilled by Him with His covenant. Thus, the church came to interpret the Bible in terms of properties in the system of the nation. The doctrines that the medieval church formulated were the interpretations of the Bible into the properties that the citizens of the Roman Empire should be cherished.
What is primarily encountered with the Bible by non covenant people are its letters. It is not God's word. If all letters are considered as what are reflected by the worldly properties, the Biblical letters are also read in the reflection of the worldly properties. But what is contained in the Bible are the covenant contents of God's togetherness with the early Christians as well as the Israelites. The covenant is the language of togetherness. Thus, the content that is contained in the covenant cannot be dealt with the covenant God and the covenant people separately. But as long as the Roman citizens are conscious of themselves in terms of their properties, they cannot but deal with Him as an objective being who has property. In this way, the covenant language is substituted by the ontological language.
Even after the Reformation, Christianity has been sustained as a national religion. The reformation of Luther or Calvin shows a difference from medieval Christianity in its doctrine, it has no difference from medieval Christianity in the respect that it does not reflect the covenant content. That is, it does not reflect the priority of God's word or the covenant content that is fulfilled with His word. The United States and Korea separate religion from state constitutionally, the content of the church teaching is the same doctrine that has been inherited for two thousand years. Although the Bible is called the covenant book, it is to be understood in terms of doctrine rather than the covenant. That is, it is not to be considered as the fulfillment of God's word.
The priority of God's word means that His word cannot be assessed by any criterion of the world. His word is only to be conscious of as His word of being together. The covenant life is fulfilled only if His word is to be conscious of as His word of being together. This is the basic setting of the covenant. The Biblical account of creation and salvation is linguistic. The creation account of the Bible shows that His word is inherent in the created world. Salvation that is narrated with Jesus is also linguistic. Love in the Bible is the fulfillment of the word, "love." It does not mean a property of the world. The Bible shows the priority of the word, "love," rather than love.
The early apostles and the Jews were led into the stark conflict in the assurance of their being together with God. The Jews crucified Jesus, judging that God was not together with Him because He did not keep the law. But the early apostles preached the gospel with the affirmation that God was together with Him. They announced that the new covenant life of being together with God was fulfilled through Jesus. That is, it was the gospel, i.e., the good news, which they preached that God was together with them through Jesus. The narrative of Jesus' birth and incarnation were to show God's togetherness with Jesus from the beginning. In this way, the Jews and the early apostles showed a sharp conflict from the perspective of the covenant. This sharp conflict was the labor pains of the appearance of the new covenant of the early Christians from the old covenant of the Israelites.
The gospel which narrates Jesus Spiritually shows that togetherness with God who is Spirit is narrated Spiritually. This is contrasted with Moses' affirmation that the Israelites would be together with God in their keeping of the law. That is, his affirmation of togetherness with Him was expressed by the condition of the keeping of the law. Thus, if Jesus was described in terms of the worldly property, togetherness with God through Jesus would be also conditional. For this reason, the story of Jesus who is together with God who is Spirit is the new covenant that is narrated Spiritually. Thus, if Jesus is to be understood by intellectuality, morality, or religiosity that is grounded in the world, the Spiritual content of the new covenant of being together with God comes to be lost.
The word, "Immanuel," is a combined word, "Imma(with)-nu(us)-el(God)." Since it means that God is together with us, it is the core word of the covenant. Moses told the Israelites that God would bless them if they kept the law. That is, he told them that He would be together with them if they kept the law. But when their life collapsed, they came to see that He was not together with them. Thus, the prophecy of Immanuel came out. The prophecy of the Messiah means the prophecy of Immanuel. He would unveil His togetherness, sending the Messiah. In this way, the OT left His togetherness with them as prophecy.
The NT begins with the proclamation of the fulfillment of Immanuel through Jesus. This is the core meaning of saying that His story is the gospel. The Immanuel God who is narrated with togetherness cannot be told as Being. As long as He is told as Being, His togetherness with us comes to be severed, for He is told independently. Thus, we and God who exists are at most set in a relationship. If the content of Immanuel is dealt with in terms of the property of Him or man, the covenant is interpreted into ontology and, thus, the Immanuel God is substituted by the triune God.
It is for the elevation of individuals to interpret the Bible in terms of intellectuality, morality, or religiosity, for intellectuality, morality, and religiosity are properties of individuals. But the elevated individuals are not God's people. God's people are fulfilled with the word of Him who is together; however, the elevated individuals are not together with Him because they have their own identity. The interpretation of the Bible into intellectuality, morality, or religiosity cannot be the fulfillment of His word. That is, it cannot be the fulfillment of His covenant.
The covenant is fulfilled linguistically, for it is fulfilled with God's word of promise. But the law or religion is not fulfilled linguistically, for it is expressed in terms of worldly property. However, the gospel is fulfilled linguistically. That is, Jesus' story is what was fulfilled linguistically and what will be fulfilled linguistically. It is not what is to be expressed in terms of the worldly property. Thus, the covenant is wholly disclosed by Jesus' story, i.e., the gospel. For this reason, the old covenant of the law has to be followed by the new covenant of the gospel.
The covenant is given by God to His people for His togetherness with His word. The covenant God is together with the covenant people with His word. Therefore, those who read the Bible, the covenant book, are the covenant people who cannot be separated from the covenant God. Christianity is the life of Christians who are the covenant people of being together with the covenant God, confessing Jesus as Lord and Christ.
