오늘은 최근 한국의 스타벅스 사태에 대해 '사과의 사회학' 관점에서 분석해 보았습니다.

Today, we take a look at the recent Starbucks controversy in South Korea

through the lens of the "sociology of apology."

공식 사과에도 쉽게 용서받지 못하는 진짜 이유는 무엇일까요?

Why is it that Starbucks fails to be forgiven so easily despite an official apology from the CEO?

샘 리처드는 친한파로 알려진 미국 펜실베이니아주립대 교수님으로 한국에 대한 언급을 자주하시는 분입니다.

Sam Richards is a professor at Pennsylvania State University in the U.S., known as a pro-Korean, and he often mentions Korea.

'한류 전도사'로 불리는 미국인 사회학자 샘 리처드 펜실베이니아주립대 교수가 스타벅스 코리아의 '5·18 탱크데이' 이벤트 파문에 대해 "한국 민주주의를 경시한 게 소비자들의 강렬한 저항을 불러일으켰다"는 분석을 내놨다. "국가 전체가 상처를 입었다"는 평가도 내렸다.

Sam Richard, an American sociologist and professor at Pennsylvania State University who is called a "Korean Wave evangelist," said on the May 18 Tank Day event scandal involving Starbucks Korea, "His disregard for Korean democracy has sparked strong resistance from consumers." He also said that the entire country was hurt.

리처드 교수는 지난달 29일 유튜브 채널에 게시된 '샘 리처드가 본 스타벅스를 용서하는 데 걸리는 시간'이라는 제목의 영상에서 이같이 밝혔다. 먼저 그는 "스타벅스가 '탱크'라는 신제품(텀블러)을 출시하는 과정에서 어떻게 한국이라는 나라 전체를 화나게 만들었는지 일련의 과정을 쭉 지켜봤다"고 운을 뗐다.

Professor Richard made the remarks in a video titled "Time to forgive Starbucks that Sam Richard saw" posted on his YouTube channel on the 29th of last month. First of all, he said, "I watched a series of processes how Starbucks made the entire country angry in the process of launching a new product (tumbler) called 'tank'."

그러면서 '탱크데이' 사태와 관련, 스타벅스코리아 모기업(이마트)의 최대 주주인 정용진 신세계그룹 회장이 대국민 사과에 나선 건 '한국적 상황'이라고 진단했다.

In connection with the "Tank Day" incident, Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin, the largest shareholder of Starbucks Korea's parent company (E-Mart), apologized to the public, saying it was a "Korean situation."

유명 인사가 공개 석상에서 직접 고개 숙여 사과하는 경우가 드문 서구 사회와는 다른 풍경이라는 뜻이다.

This means that it is a different landscape from Western society, where it is rare for celebrities to bow down and apologize in public.

리처드 교수는 "한국처럼 인간중심적이고 공동체중심적인 사회에선 (잘못한 사람이) 사과하는 모습을 더 자주 보게 된다"며 "공동체 사회 구성원들의 삶이 미국이나 서구보다 훨씬 더 긴밀하게 얽혀 있기 때문"이라고 설명했다.

Professor Richard said, "In a human-centered and community-centered society like Korea, we see (the wrong person) apologizing more often. This is because the lives of community members are much more closely intertwined than in the U.S. or the West."

누군가가 타인과의 신뢰를 깨뜨리면, 그에 대해 사과를 요구하고 당사자에게 책임을 묻는 문화가 한국에선 보편화돼 있다는 것이다.

If someone breaks trust with others, the culture of demanding an apology and holding the person responsible is common in Korea.

하지만 한국의 대중은 스타벅스 코리아와 정용진 회장의 사과를 받아들이기 힘든 상황이라는게 리처드 교수의 지적이다.

However, Professor Richard points out that it is difficult for the Korean public to accept the apology from Starbucks Korea and Chairman Chung.

그는 "상처를 입은 주체는 대한민국이라는 국가 전체"라며 "최고경영자(CEO) 한 두 명이나 고위 임원 몇 명이 나선다고 해서 '무너진 균형'이 쉽게 회복되긴 어렵다"고 말했다.

"The entire country of Korea is the one who was hurt," he said. "It is difficult to restore the "broken balance" just because one or two CEOs or several senior executives are joining the team."

특히 '탱크 데이' 사태는 한국인이 품고 있는 '민주주의의 자부심'을 훼손했다고 짚었다. 역린을 건드렸다는 얘기다.

In particular, he pointed out that the "Tank Day" incident undermined Koreans' sense of pride in democracy.

리처드 교수는 "상대적으로 역사가 짧은 민주주의 국가인 한국에서 민주주의가 갖는 힘은 대단히 견고하다"며 "(한국은) 지난 60년간 민주적 정치 체제를 통해 눈부신 발전을 이룩하면서 세계적인 강대국 반열에 올랐다"고 설명했다.

In other words, he was caught off guard. "The power of democracy in Korea, a democratic country with a relatively short history, is very strong," Professor Richard said. "(Korea) has achieved remarkable development through democratic political system over the past 60 years, and has risen to the rank of world-class power."

한국인은 민주주의를 지키기 위해 "어떤 일이라도 기꺼이 행동에 나설 준비가 돼 있다"는 게 그의 결론이다.

He concluded that Koreans are "willing to take action in any way" to protect democracy.

리처드 교수는 2018년 대학 강의에서 K팝 아이돌 그룹인 방탄소년단(BTS)의 세계적 성공을 일찍이 예견했던 인물이다. 이런 이유로 국내에선 '한류 전도사'라는 별명을 갖고 있기도 하다.

Professor Richard predicted the global success of BTS, a K-pop idol group, during a university lecture in 2018. For this reason, he is nicknamed the "Korean Wave Evangelist" in Korea.
