경찰이 이 대통령에 대한 허위사실을 유포한 혐의로 수사를 받고 있는 모스 탄 미국 리버티대 교수에 대해 출국정지를 신청했습니다.

탄 교수는 부정선거를 감시하겠다며 지난달 28일 입국한 뒤 경찰의 출석 요구에 응하지 않고 있습니다.

모스 탄 미국 리버티대 교수는 지난해 6월 미국 워싱턴DC에서 열린 기자회견에서 이재명 대통령에 대한 허위사실을 유포해 명예를 훼손한 혐의로 경찰 수사를 받고 있습니다.

하지만 그간 미국에 체류해 조사가 어려웠는데 6·3 지방선거를 앞두고 지난달 28일 한국의 부정선거를 감시하겠다며 입국했습니다.

경찰은 공항에 직접 나가 29일 출석을 요청했지만, 탄 교수는 응하지 않고 경찰에 불출석 사유서와 수사관 기피 신청서를 제출했습니다.

경찰 출석은 거부한 채 경기도 평택시 안중읍의 사전투표소를 방문한 것으로 확인됐는데 해당 지역은 부정선거를 주장해 온 황교안 후보가 출마한 지역입니다.

경찰은 결국 탄 교수에게 도주 우려가 있다고 보고 법무부에 출국 정지를 신청했습니다.

출국 정지는 외국인에 대한 출국 금지 조치를 뜻합니다.

탄 교수의 명예훼손 혐의가 인정된다고 보고 있는 경찰은 곧 다시 소환을 통보할 방침입니다.

박정보 서울경찰청장은 "정해진 절차에 따라 필요한 수사를 하겠다"고 밝혔습니다.

2일 법조계에 따르면 탄 교수는 전날 서울행정법원에 법무부 장관을 상대로 출·입국 금지 처분 취소 소송을 내고 집행정지를 신청했다. 이 사건은 행정1단독 위지현 부장판사가 심리한다.
