전국동시지방선거를 앞두고 열 달 만에 국내에 들어와 부정선거 음모론을 퍼뜨리고 다니는 모스 탄 미국 리버티대 교수를 즉각 체포하라는 요구가 터져 나왔습니다.

Calls have erupted for the immediate arrest of a professor at Liberty University in the United States, who came to Korea for the first time in 10 months ahead of the national simultaneous local elections and is spreading conspiracy theories about fraudulent elections.

시민단체 '촛불행동'은 오늘 서울 서대문구 경찰청사 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 "지방선거를 앞두고 거짓을 유포하며 국내 극우세력을 선동하는 범죄자가 또다시 한국에 왔다"며 "모스 탄을 즉각 체포해 구속하라"고 주장했습니다.

The civic group Candlelight Action held a press conference in front of the police building in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul today and insisted, "A criminal who spreads lies and incites far-right forces in Korea has come to Korea again ahead of the local elections," adding, "Arrest and arrest Mostan immediately."

촛불행동은 "탄 교수는 경찰 조사를 거부한 채 '한미 부정선거 공동 조사단' 미국 대표로서 황교안·전광훈·전한길 등 국내 극우세력을 규합해 끊임없이 거짓을 유포하고 있다"고 지적했습니다. 이어 "출입국관리법에 따르면 국내 체류하는 외국인은 기본적으로 정치 활동을 할 수 없다"며 "미국판 '윤 어게인'이 대한민국 사법체계를 무시한 채 정부를 공격하고 대놓고 범죄를 저지르고 있는 것을 더는 용납할 수 없다"고 강조했습니다.

The candlelight action pointed out, "Professor Tan, who refused to investigate the police, is constantly spreading falsehoods by rallying domestic far-right forces such as Hwang Kyo-ahn, Jeon Kwang-hoon, and Jeon Han-gil as the U.S. representative of the "Joint Investigation Team for Korea-U.S. Unfair Election." "Under the Immigration Control Act, foreigners staying in Korea are basically not allowed to engage in political activities," he said. "It is no longer acceptable for the U.S. version of 'Yoon Again' to attack the government and commit crimes openly while ignoring the Korean judicial system."

이들은 "범죄자가 제 발로 다시 들어왔는데 수사를 하는 것은 당연하다"며 "법무부는 즉각 출국정지를 내리고 경찰은 철저히 수사해 처벌해야 한다"고 촉구했습니다.

They urged, "It is natural to investigate when the criminal came back in on his own," adding, "The Ministry of Justice should immediately suspend his departure and the police should thoroughly investigate and punish him."

지방선거 사전투표를 하루 앞둔 지난달 28일 인천공항으로 입국한 탄 교수는 허위 사실에 의한 명예훼손 혐의로 경찰의 출석 요구를 받았지만, 이튿날 수사팀 기피 신청서와 함께 불출석 의사를 전달하며 수사에 협조하지 않고 있습니다.

Professor Tan, who arrived at Incheon International Airport on the 28th of last month, a day before the early voting for local elections, was asked to appear by the police on charges of defamation by false facts, but he has not cooperated with the investigation by delivering his intention to not attend along with an application to avoid the investigation team the next day.

(서울=연합뉴스) 정지수 기자 = 이재명 대통령의 명예를 훼손한 혐의 등을 받는 모스 탄(한국명 단현명) 미국 리버티대 교수가 법무부의 출국정지 조치를 취소해달라고 법원에 요청했다.

2일 법조계에 따르면 탄 교수는 전날 서울행정법원에 출국금지 처분 취소 소송을 내고 집행정지를 신청했다.

미국 트럼프 1기 행정부에서 국무부 국제형사사법대사를 지낸 탄 교수는 '중국이 한국의 부정선거에 개입했다', '이재명 대통령이 어릴 적 소년원에 들어갔다'는 등의 음모론을 제기해 논란을 빚어왔다.

탄 교수는 그간 미국에 체류했으나 6·3 지방선거를 앞둔 지난달 28일 한국의 부정선거를 감시·검증하겠다며 입국했다.

경찰은 그가 출석 요구에 응하지 않자 도주 우려가 있다고 보고 전날 법무부에 출국 정지를 신청했고 이에 탄 교수가 맞대응한 것이다. 출국 정지는 외국인에 대한 출국금지 조치를 뜻한다.

한편 진보성향 시민단체 촛불행동은 이날 오후 2시 서울 서대문구 경찰청 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 탄 교수를 체포하라고 촉구했다.

이 단체는 "지방선거를 앞두고 국내 극우세력을 선동하는 범죄자가 또다시 한국에 왔다"며 "출입국관리법에 따르면 한국에 체류하는 외국인은 정치활동을 할 수 없으니 탄 교수를 즉각 체포하고 구속하라"고 요구했다.

촛불행동은 또 탄 교수가 경찰의 출석 요구에 응하지 않고 지난달 29일 경기도 평택시의 사전투표소를 방문한 점을 비판했다.

이 단체는 "탄 교수가 황교안·전광훈·전한길을 연달아 만나며 국내 극우세력들을 선동하고 있다"고 주장했다.

A progressive civic group has called for the arrest of Mostan (Korean name Dan Hyun-myung), a professor at Liberty University in the U.S., who is under investigation for spreading false manipulation information about President Lee Jae-myung.

진보성향 시민단체 촛불행동은 2일 오후 서울 서대문구 경찰청 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 "6.3 지방선거를 앞두고 거짓을 유포하며 국내 극우세력을 선동하는 범죄자 모스 탄이 또다시 한국에 왔다"며 "경찰은 모스 탄을 즉각 체포하고 철저히 수사해 처벌해야 한다"고 밝혔다.

The progressive civic group Candlelight Action held a press conference in front of the National Police Agency in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 2nd and said, "Mostan, a criminal who spreads lies and incites far-right forces in Korea, has come to Korea again ahead of the June 3 local elections. 또 탄 교수를 중심으로 국내 극우세력이 조직 활동을 하고 있다고 주장했다.

He also claimed that far-right forces in Korea are engaged in organizational activities, centered on Professor Tan.

이 단체는 "모스 탄이 한국에 오자 국내 극우세력은 '한·미부정선거공동조사단(조사단)'을 발족하고 카카오톡 단체 대화방까지 개설하여 조직적인 활동을 하고 있다"며 "출입국관리법에 따르면 한국에 체류하는 외국인은 기본적으로 정치활동을 할 수 없다. 모스 탄이 대놓고 한국법을 위반하며 범죄를 저지르고 있는 것"이라고 지적했다.

"When Mostan came to Korea, far-right forces in Korea launched a joint investigation team for Korea-U.S. fraudulent elections and even opened a group chat room on KakaoTalk to carry out systematic activities," the group said. "Under the Immigration Control Act, foreigners staying in Korea are basically prohibited from engaging in political activities. Mostan is openly committing a crime by violating Korean law."

아울러 앞서 탄 교수가 경찰 출석 요구에 응하지 않고 경기도 평택시의 사전투표소를 방문한 점도 꼬집었다.

In addition, he pointed out that Professor Tan visited an early voting center in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, without responding to the police's request for attendance.

이 단체는 "경찰은 허위사실을 유포한 범죄자 모스 탄에게 출석해 조사를 받으라고 했다"며 "(탄 교수는) 이를 거부하고 사전투표소를 방문, 황교안과 전광훈, 전한길을 연달아 만나 국내 극우세력들을 선동하고 있다"고 했다.

The group said, "The police asked Mostan, the criminal who spread the false information, to attend and be investigated. (Professor Tan) refused to do so and visited the early voting center and met Hwang Kyo-ahn, Jeon Kwang-hoon, and Jeon Jeon Il-gil in succession to incite extreme right-wing forces in Korea."

이어 탄 교수 출국 예정일인 오는 4일을 언급하며 "시간이 많지 않다. 미국에 있을 때는 신병을 확보하지 못해 제대로 수사하지 못했다면, 범죄자가 제 발로 다시 들어왔는데 수사를 하는 것은 당연하다"고 재차 촉구했다.

Referring to Professor Tan's scheduled departure on the 4th, he urged again, "We don't have much time. When you are in the United States, if you can't investigate properly because you couldn't secure a new person, it's natural to investigate when the criminal came back in on his own."

탄 교수는 지난해 6월 미국 워싱턴DC에서 열린 기자회견에서 이재명 대통령이 청소년 시절 강력범죄에 연루돼 소년원에 수감됐다는 취지의 허위 사실을 발언한 혐의로 고발됐다.

Professor Tan was accused of making false statements at a press conference held in Washington, D.C., in June last year to the effect that President Lee was imprisoned in a juvenile detention center for his involvement in violent crimes as a teenager.

Tan faces charges of defamation for claiming at a June 2025 press conference in Washington, D.C., that Lee was detained in a juvenile facility in his youth after taking part in a rape and murder. Courts previously ruled that claim to be false.

탄은 2025년 6월 워싱턴 DC에서 열린 기자회견에서 이재명 대통령이 강간과 살인에 가담한 후 청소년 시설에 구금되었다고 주장한 혐의로 명예훼손 혐의를 받고 있습니다. 법원은 이전에 그 주장이 거짓이라고 판결한 바 있습니다.

앞서 경찰은 전날(1일) 허위사실에 따른 명예훼손 혐의로 탄 교수에 대한 출국정지를 법무부에 요청했다.

Earlier, the police asked the Ministry of Justice to suspend Professor Tan's departure on charges of defamation based on false information the previous day (1st).

탄 교수도 같은 날 서울행정법원에 출국금지 처분 취소 소송을 제기하고 집행정지를 신청했다.

On the same day, Professor Tan filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Administrative Court to cancel the ban on departure and applied for suspension of execution.

Morse Tan, a Korean American former U.S. diplomat, has sparked controversy during his visit to Seoul this week after voicing support for conspiracy theories about election fraud in Korea and attempting to meet with detained former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Tan, who arrived in Seoul on Monday, was scheduled to meet Yoon on Wednesday at Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, where the former president has been held since his re-arrest last Thursday while a special counsel looks into insurrection charges related to his Dec. 3 martial law declaration.

The probe follows a complaint filed by a Seoul-based conservative civic group, which accused Tan of making false statements about Lee during a public event in Washington on June 26.

At that event, Tan claimed that Lee Jae Myung, as a youth, was involved in sexual assault and murder. As a result, he was put in juvenile detention, and therefore was unable to attend junior high and high school.
