1. Atlanta Hawks
Time Warner Inc. In October 1996, Time Warner completed a $7.6 billion merger with Turner Broadcasting System Inc, who owned the team prior. With the 2000 merger of Time Warner and AOL, the team is now owned by AOL Time Warner
2. Boston Celtics
Celtics Inc. is the corporate general partner and a privately held corporation owned by Donald Gaston, Paul Gaston and Walcott Partners. Paul Gaston is team chairman. The team is a publicly traded (BOS) limited partnership.
3. Charlotte Hornets
George Shinn and Ray Woolridge.
4. Chicago Bulls
A 29-member group headed by Jerry Reinsdorf owns the team. Reinsdorf has been chairman since March 1985 when he led the group that purchased a controlling interest in the team for an estimated $9.2 million.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers
George and Gordon Gund purchased the team for $20 million from Ted Stepien in 1983. The brothers also co-own the NHL San Jose Sharks.
6. Dallas Mavericks
Mark Cuban, purchased majority interest of the team and new arena in January 2000 from Ross Perot Jr and partner Frank Zaccarelli who bought the club for $125 million in May 1996.
7. Denver Nuggets
Stan Kroenke bought the Nuggets, along with the Colorado Avalanche and the Pepsi Center, in April 2000 for $450 million. Kroenke also owns 40 percent of the St. Louis Rams.
8. Detroit Pistons
William M. Davidson has been the majority owner since 1974, when he bought the club from Fred Zollner. Davidson owns about 70 percent of the club. Davidson also owns the NHL Tampa Lightning and the ICE Palace.
9. Golden State Warriors
Christopher Cohan became the team's sole owner in 1995.
10. Houston Rockets
RocketBall Ltd., owned by businessman Leslie Alexander owns the club. Alexander paid $85 million to car dealer Charlie Thomas for a majority stake in the club in July 1993.
11. Indiana Pacers
Brothers Herbert and Melvin Simon have owned the club since 1983.
12. Los Angeles Clippers
Lawyer Donald Sterling bought the club for $12.5 million in June 1981, when the team was located in San Diego. He moved the club to Los Angeles before the start of the 1984-85 season.
13. Los Angeles Lakers
Majority owner Jerry Buss bought the Lakers, NHL Kings and the Great Western Forum from the late Jack Kent Cooke in June 1979. Buss sold the Kings to Bruce McNall in March 1988. 14. Miami Heat
The Arison family bought control of the club after purchasing the interests of former NBA star Billy Cunningham and Lewis Schaffel in 1995. Micky Arison, chairman and CEO of Carnival Corporation, is managing general partner. other partners include Julio Iglesias, Raanan Katz, Sidnet Kimmel, Robert Sturges and Amancio Suarez.
15. Milwaukee Bucks
Herb Kohl bought the club in March 1985 from Jim Fitzgerald for $18.5 million.
16. Minnesota Timberwolves
Glenn Taylor became majority owner of the club in March 1995, when he led a group that bought the franchise from founders Harvey Ratner and Marv Wolfenson. The reported purchase price was $88.5 million.
17. New Jersey Nets
Is owned by a group led by co-chairmen Lewis Katz and Finn Wentworth andYankees owner George Steinbrenner ina venture called YankeeNets . Katz is the Nets principal owner and Wentworth is the club CEO.
18. New York Knicks
The club is a wholly owned subsidiary of Madison Square Garden L.P., which is 88.5-percent owned by Chuck Dolan's Cablevision Systems Corp., with ITT Corp. owning 11.5 percent.
19. Orlando Magic
The DeVos family bought the club for $110 million from former majority owners Jim Hewitt and William DuPont III in September 1991. The franchise is owned by RDV Sports, which is owned by Richard DeVos, the co-founder of Amway Corp. He serves as chairman of the club.
20. Philadelphia 76ers
ComcastSpectacor, a joint venture formed in March 1996 between Comcast Corp. and Spectacor, owns the club. Ed Snider, founder of Spectacor and former NHL Flyers majority owner, operates the joint venture. Snider serves as club chairman. Pat Croce serves as team president.
21. Phoenix Suns
An investment group led by club President and CEO Jerry Colangelo bought the club for $44.5 million in 1987. Colangelo also owns the Arizona Diamondbacks.
22. Portland Trail Blazers
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen bought the club for a reported $70 million from former owner Larry Weinberg in 1988. Allen also owns the Seattle Seahawks.
23. Sacramento Kings
In January 1998, the Maloof family acquired a 24 percent non-voting stake in the Kings, the Monarchs and Arco Arena for $37.5 million. In January 1999, Maloof Sports & Entertainment exercised the option to acquire the remaining 29 percent of the team owned by James Thomas. Joe and Gavin Maloof are the managing owners. The Maloof's also own a Casino in Neveda.
24. San Antonio Spurs
A group of 22 investors bought the club in 1993 from current Vikings owner Red McCombs for $75 million. Team chairman is Peter Holt.
25. Seattle SuperSonics
The club is owned by an investment group led by Howard Schultz, and Wally Walker consiting of 50 investors, with Schultz serving as Chairman, and Walker as President. The purchase price was $200 million, approved in March of 2001, and included the WNBA Storm. Schultz purchased the team from the Ackerly Group, which bought the team for $16 million in 1983.
26. Toronto Raptors
Maple Leaf Gardens Ltd. bought the team, the Air Canada Centre and development rights to Toronto's Union Center for $503 Canadian dollars in February 1998. Steven A. Stavro serves as Chairman of the Board. The team president is Richard A Peddie.
27. Utah Jazz
Larry Miller bought a 50 percent interest in the team from former owner Sam Battisone for $8 million in 1985 and bought the remaining 50 percent for a reported $12 million a year later.
28. Vancouver Grizzlies
Chicago businessman Michael Heisley bought the team for $160 million from Orca Bay Entertainment, which still owns the Vancouver Canucks and GM Place. Heisley has recently committed to building a state-of-the-art Training and Office facility for the team. In March of 2001, Heisley petitioned the NBA to relocate the team to Memphis.
29. Washington Wizards
Washington Sports & Entertainment owns the team, its chairman is Abe Pollin who has owned the club since 1964, when he and several partners bought the club for $1.1 million. Lincoln Holdings owns the Washington Capitals and is a minority partner in Washington Sports & Entertainment, including the Washington Wizards. In 2000, Michael Jordan purchased 10 percent of Lincoln Holdings for a reported $20-$30 million and became head of basketball operations for the Wizards. Jordan has an option to buy another 20 percent stake in the Lincoln Holdings group.
