If you do not wish to perform the functions described in the event of an emergency, please ask a flight attendant to reseat you. We request that all electronic devices be turned off until we fly above 10,000 feet. We will notify you when it is safe to use such devices. If you have any questions about our flight today, please don't hesitate to ask one of our flight attendants. Thank you." Door closure Usually before the door is closed, or while it is closed, this announcement is made. "Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of Captain Z and the entire crew, we would like to welcome you aboard ??? Airlines flight ???, non-stop service to ??? (then continuing on to ???). My name is X and I'm your chief flight attendant. We will be flying at an altitude of ??? feet/meters at a speed of ??? miles per hour/kilometers per hour. Our flight time today/to ??? will be of ??? hours and ??? minutes. At this time, make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position. Also make sure your seat belt is correctly fastened. Thank you." When the door is closed and the aircraft is about to pushback, the Captain or the Chief flight attendant will make an announcement intended to the flight attendants. "Flight attendants/Cabin Crew, please prepare for gate departure". "Flight attendants/Cabin Crew, doors on automatic, cross-check and report. Thank you." Before safety video/demonstration Depending on the type of aircraft and presence of a video system, this announcement will be made. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to direct your attention to the television monitors. We will be showing our safety demonstration and would like the next few minutes of your complete attention." If there is no video system and the flight attendants do the demonstration themselves in the aisles, the announcement might be as follows. "Now we request your full attention as the flight attendants demonstrate the safety features of this aircraft". Safety demonstration Either on the video screen, or live, the safety demonstration might sound like this. If it is a video presentation, it usually starts with a friendly welcome from the airline, the reminder of the seat belt sign currently illuminated, the seat back and tray table restriction, as well as the carry-on luggage. "To fasten your seat belt, insert the metal tip into the buckle and tighten by pulling on the loose end of the strap. To release your seat belt, lift up the top of the buckle. Once we reach a safe altitude, the Captain will turn off the seat belt sign but, for your safety, please keep your seat belt fastened while you're seated, as we cannot always prevent turbulence. In the unlikely event of a loss of cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will automatically drop down in front of you. (Only on flights where smoking is allowed: When you see the mask, please extinguish your cigarette). To start the flow of oxygen, pull the mask towards you. Place the mask over your nose and mouth, secure it using the elastic band, and breathe normally. Although the bag does not fully inflate, oxygen will flow to the mask. Secure your own mask first before helping others. You may remove the mask when indicated by a uniformed crew member. There are ??? emergency exits. ??? forward, ??? aft, and ??? over each wing. Please take a few moments to locate the two exits nearest your seat. In some cases, your nearest exit may be behind you. In the event of an evacuation, leave your carry-on luggage behind you and proceed to the exit. Floor lighting will guide you. Open the exit by moving the handle in the direction of the arrow. In case of an emergency landing, please assume this bracing position. (If the demonstration is live: Cross your arms and hold the top of the seat back in front of you. / Bend down and grab your ankles.) (Essential on overwater flights, optional for other flights: In the event of a water landing, you will find a life vest under your seat. This is how you place the life vest on. Open the plastic bag and remove the life vest. Slip it over your head. Pass the straps around your waist and adjust loosely at the front. To inflate the vest, pull firmly on the red cord, only when you leave the aircraft. If you need to refill the vest, blow into the mouth pieces. Also, your seat bottom cushion can be used as a flotation device. Pull the cushion from the seat, slip your arms into the straps, and have the cushion to your chest. Each exit is equipped with an evacuation slide, which can also be used as a life raft. Additional life rafts are located in the specially marked overhead bins.) When the seat belt sign is illuminated, or when requested by a flight attendant, please turn off all electronic devices. The use of cellular/mobile phones or any electronic device operating with an antenna is forbidden at all times. (Only on flights where smoking is allowed: Smoking is permitted only when seated in the smoking area, and when the No Smoking sign is off.) It is forbidden to smoke in all (other) areas, including the lavatories. Tampering with, disabling, or destroying lavatory smoke detectors is prohibited by law. You will find all this safety information in the card located by your seat. We strongly suggest you read it sometime during the flight. Before take-off Usually, the Captain will make a small briefing before take-off, sometimes indicating the priority for take-off (e.g. "We are third in priority for take-off, we should depart in about five minutes"). But there is always an announcement like: "(Ladies and gentlemen, we have just been cleared for take-off.) Flight attendants, please be seated/prepare for take-off." Ascent After passing above clouds or turbulence, the Captain will turn off the Fasten Seat Belt sign, but usually, the aircraft is still climbing to its cruising altitude. The flight attendants will then invite the passengers to release their seat belts if needed. "Ladies and gentlemen, the Captain has turned off the Fasten Seat Belt sign, and you may now move around the cabin. However we always recommend to keep your seat belt fastened while you're seated. You may now turn on your electronic devices such as calculators, CD players and laptop computers. In a few moments, the flight attendants will be passing around the cabin to offer you a cocktail or beverage of your choice, along with breakfast/dinner/supper/a snack. (On long flights with inflight entertainment: Also, we will be showing you our video presentation.) In the meantime, sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight." Turbulence Occasionally, turbulence may occur during a flight. Shortly after the seat belt sign illuminates, this announcement will be made. "Ladies and gentlemen, the Captain has turned on the fasten seat belt sign. Please return your seats and keep your seat belts fastened. Thank you." Descent Before, or during the descent, the Captain will usually make an announcement with local time and temperature at the destination airport, and time left until arrival. It is followed by an announcement from the flight attendant. "Ladies and gentlemen, we have started our descent/in preparation for our descent into the ??? area, please make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position. Make sure your seat belt is securely fastened and all carry-on luggage is underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. (Only on flights where smoking is allowed: At this time, we request that you extinguish your cigarettes and) Please turn off all electronic devices until we are safely parked at the gate. The flight attendants are currently passing around the cabin to make a final check and collect any remaining cups and glasses. Cabin service is now terminated. Thank you." Final approach To indicate the landing clearance or final approach, the Captain will either say "Flight attendants, prepare for landing please", or blink the No Smoking sign. It is immediately followed by an announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, we have just been cleared to land at the ??? airport. Please make sure one last time your seat belt is securely fastened." In Canada, federal regulations require the cabin crew to remind the passengers of the location of the emergency exits during the descent. The previous announcement will then continue as follows. "In compliance with Transport Canada, we remind you that there are ??? emergency exits. ??? forward, ??? aft, and ??? over each wing. Thank you." After landing After touchdown, and as the aircraft is turning off the active runway and taxiing to the gate, the flight attendant will do one last announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to ??? airport. Local time is ???. For your safety and comfort, we ask that you please remain seated with your seat belt fastened until the Captain/Captain Z turns off the Fasten Seat Belt sign. This will indicate that we have come to a complete stop at the gate and it is safe for you to move about. Please check around your seat for any personal belongings you may have brought onboard with you. When you open the overhead bins, please use caution as some heavy objects may have shifted during the flight.
