HOMILY OF THE HOLY FATHER, POPE FRANCIS, HOLY MASS, JUBILEE OF THE ARMED FORCES, POLICE AND SECURITY PERSONNEL, Saint Peter's Square, 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time, 9 February 2025

Jesus’ actions at the Lake of Gennesaret are described by the Evangelist with three verbs: he saw, he went aboard and he sat down. Jesus saw, Jesus went aboard and Jesus sat down. Jesus is not concerned with showing off to the crowds, with doing a job, with following a timetable in carrying out his mission. On the contrary, he always makes it his priority to encounter others, to relate to them, and to sympathize with the struggles and setbacks that often burden hearts and take away hope.

복음사가는 겐네사렛 호수에서 예수님께서 행하신 일을 세 가지 동사로 설명합니다: 보셨다,  배에 오르셨다. 앉으셨다. 예수님께서 보셨습니다. 예수님께서 배에 오르셨습니다. 예수님께서 앉으셨습니다. 예수님께서는 군중에게 과시하거나, 일을 하거나, 자신의 사명을 수행하는 데 있어 일정을 따르는 데 관심이 없으십니다. 오히려 그분께서는 다른 사람들을 만나고, 그들과 관계를 맺고, 종종 마음을 무겁게 하고 희망을 앗아가는 갈등과 좌절을 측은이 여기는 것을 항상 최우선으로 생각하십니다.

That is why Jesus, on that day, saw, went aboard and sat down. First, Jesus saw. He has a discerning gaze that, even amid the great crowd, makes him able to spot two boats approaching the shore and to see the disappointment on the faces of those fishermen, now washing their empty nets after a night of fruitless labour. Jesus looks with compassion at those men. Let us never forget this: the compassion of God. God’s three attitudes are closeness, compassion and tenderness. Let us not forget: God is near, God is tender and God is always compassionate. Jesus looks with compassion at the expressions of those men, sensing their discouragement and frustration after having worked all night and caught nothing, their hearts as empty as the nets they haul.

그래서 예수님께서 그날 보셨고, 배에 오르셨고, 앉으셨습니다. 첫째, 예수님께서 보셨습니다. 그분은 분별력 있는 시선을 가지고 계셔서, 큰 무리 가운데서도 해안에 접근하는 두 척의 배를 알아차리시고, 밤새도록 헛수고한 후 빈 그물을 씻고 있는 어부들의 얼굴에 나타난 실망을 보실 수 있었습니다. 예수님께서 그들을 가엾은 마음으로 바라보십니다. 우리는 이것을 결코 잊지 맙시다: 하느님의 동정심. 하느님의 세 가지 태도는 친밀함, 동정심, 다정함입니다. 우리는 이것을 잊지 맙시다: 하느님께서 가까이 계시고, 하느님께서 다정하시고, 하느님께서 가엾이 여기십니다. 예수님께서는 그 사람들의 표정을 가엾은 마음으로 바라보시고 밤새 일했지만 아무것도 잡지 못한 후의 낙담과 좌절을 느끼시고, 그들이 끌어올리는 그물처럼 텅 빈 그들의 마음을 느끼십니다.

Seeing their discouragement, Jesus went aboard. He asks Simon to put out a little way from the shore and he climbs aboard the boat. In this way, he enters into Simon’s life and shares in his sense of disappointment and futility. This is significant: Jesus does not simply stand by and watch as things go wrong, as we often do, and then complain bitterly. Rather, taking the initiative, he approaches Simon, spends time with him at that difficult moment and chooses to board the boat of his life, which that night had seemed fraught with failure.

예수님께서 그들의 낙담을 보시고 배에 오르셨습니다. 예수님께서 시몬에게 해안에서 조금 떨어진 곳으로 나가라고 하셨고, 시몬은 배에 올랐습니다. 이런 식으로 예수님께서는 시몬의 삶에 들어가 실망과 허무함을 함께 느끼셨습니다. 이것은 중요한 사실입니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 종종 그러하듯이 일이 잘못되는 것을 그냥 서서 지켜보신 다음 심하게 불평하지 않으십니다. 오히려 주도권을 잡고 시몬에게 다가가 그 어려운 순간에 그와 함께 시간을 보내시고 그날 밤 실패로 가득 찬 듯 했던 그의 삶의 배에 오르기로 하십니다.

Then, once aboard, Jesus sat down. In the Gospels, this is typical of a master, of one who teaches others. Indeed, the Gospel states that Jesus sat down and taught. Glimpsing in those fishers’ eyes and hearts the frustration of a night of fruitless toil, Jesus boards the boat in order to proclaim the good news, to bring light to the dark night of disappointment, to tell of the beauty of God even amid the struggles of life, and to reaffirm that hope endures even when all seems lost.

배에 오르신 후에 앉으셨습니다. 복음서에서 이것은 다른 사람을 가르치는 스승의 전형입니다. 실제로 복음서는 예수님께서 앉아서 가르치셨다고 말합니다. 어부들의 눈과 마음에서 결실 없는 수고의 밤의 좌절을 엿보신 예수님께서는 좋은 소식을 선포하고, 실망의 어두운 밤에 빛을 비추고, 삶의 고투 속에서도 하느님의 아름다움을 전하고, 모든 것이 잃어버린 것처럼 보일 때에도 희망이 지속된다는 것을 재확인하기 위해 배에 오르셨습니다.

Then the miracle happens: when the Lord gets into the boat of our lives to bring us the good news of God’s love that constantly accompanies and sustains us, then life begins anew, hope is reborn, enthusiasm revives, and we can once again cast our nets into the sea.

그리고 기적이 일어납니다. 주님께서 우리 삶의 배에 들어오셔서 지속적으로 우리를 동반하고 지탱해주는 하느님 사랑의 복음을 전해주시면 삶이 새롭게 시작되고, 희망이 되살아나고, 열정이 소생하고, 우리는 다시 한 번 바다에 그물을 던질 수 있습니다.

Brothers and sisters, this message of hope accompanies us today as we celebrate the Jubilee of the Armed Forces, Police and Security Personnel. I thank all of you for your service, and I greet all the Authorities present, the military associations and academies, and the military Ordinaries and chaplains. All of you have been entrusted with a lofty mission that embraces numerous aspects of social and political life: defending our nations, maintaining security, upholding legality and justice. You are present in penitentiaries and at the forefront of the fight against crime and the various forms of violence that threaten to disrupt the life of society. I think too of all those engaged in relief work in the wake of natural disasters, the safeguarding of the environment, rescue efforts at sea, the protection of the vulnerable and the promotion of peace.

형제자매 여러분, 이 희망의 메시지는 우리가 군대, 경찰, 경비 인력의 희년을 기념하는 오늘 우리를 동반합니다. 저는 여러분 모두의 봉사에 감사드리며, 오늘 참석하신 모든 당국자, 군사 협회와 학원, 군종 주교와 군종 사제에게 인사드립니다. 여러분 모두는 사회적, 정치적 삶의 여러 측면을 포괄하는 숭고한 사명을 맡고 계십니다. 즉 국가의 방어, 안보 유지, 법률 수호와 정의의 옹호 사명입니다. 여러분은 교도소를 관리하고 사회생활을 방해할 수 있는 범죄와 다양한 형태의 폭력에 맞서 싸우는 최전선에 있습니다. 저는 또한 자연재해 여파 속에서 구조 활동을 하고, 환경을 보호하고, 해상의 구조 활동, 취약 계층의 보호, 그리고 평화의 증진에 종사하시는 모든 분들을 생각합니다.

The Lord also asks you to do as he does: to see, to go aboard and to sit down. To see, because you are called to keep your eyes ever open, alert to threats to the common good, to dangers menacing the lives of your fellow citizens, and to environmental, social and political risks to which we are exposed. To go aboard, because your uniforms, the discipline that has shaped you, the courage that is your hallmark, the oath you have taken — all these are things that remind you of the importance not only of seeing evil in order to report it, but also of boarding the storm-tossed boat and working to ensure that it does not run aground. For that too is part of your mission in the service of the good, freedom, and justice.

주님께서는 또한 여러분에게 그분이 하시는 대로 하라고 청하십니다. 즉 보고, 배에 오르고, 앉는 것입니다. 여러분은 항상 눈을 뜨고 공동선에 대한 위협, 동료 시민의 생명을 위협하는 위험, 그리고 우리가 노출되어 있는 환경적, 사회적, 정치적 위험에 대해 경계하라는 부름을 받았기 때문에 보라고 하십니다. 여러분의 제복, 여러분이 받은 훈육, 여러분의 특징인 용기, 여러분이 한 맹세 - 이 모든 것이 악을 보고하기 위해서 볼 뿐만 아니라 폭풍에 휘말리는 배에 올라타서 배가 좌초되지 않도록 하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 상기시켜주기 때문에 배에 올라타라고 하십니다. 그것 역시 선, 자유, 정의를 위해 봉사하는 여러분의 사명의 일부이기 때문입니다.

Then, finally, to sit down, because your presence in our cities and neighbourhoods to uphold law and order, and your taking the part of the defenceless, can serve as a lesson for all of us. They teach us that goodness can prevail over everything. They teach us that justice, fairness and civic responsibility remain as necessary nowadays as ever. They teach us that we can create a more human, just and fraternal world, despite the opposing forces of evil.

그리고 마지막으로, 앉으라고 하십니다. 우리의 도시와 이웃에서 법과 질서를 지키는 여러분의 현존과 무방비 상태의 사람들의 편을 드는 여러분의 역할은 우리 모두에게 교훈이 될 수 있기 때문입니다. 그것은 선이 모든 것보다 이길 수 있다는 것을 가르쳐줍니다. 우리에게 정의, 공정성, 시민적 책임이 오늘날에도 예전과 마찬가지로 필요하다는 것을 가르쳐 줍니다. 또한 우리에게 악의 반대 세력에도 불구하고 더 인간적이고, 정의롭고, 형제애적인 세상을 만들 수 있다는 것을 가르쳐 줍니다.

In carrying out your work, which embraces your whole life, you are accompanied by your chaplains, an important priestly presence in your midst. Their job is not — as has at times unfortunately happened in history — to bless perverse acts of war. No. They are in your midst as the presence of Christ, who desires to walk at your side, to offer you a listening and sympathetic ear, to encourage you to set out ever anew and to support you in your daily service. As a source of moral and spiritual support, they accompany you at every step and help you to carry out your mission in the light of the Gospel and in the pursuit of the common good.

여러분의 전 생애를 아우르는 여러분의 업무를 수행하는 중에, 여러분 가운데에 있는 중요한 사제적 존재인 여러분의 사제들이 여러분은 동반합니다. 그들의 역할은 - 역사에서 불행히도 때때로 일어났던 것처럼 - 왜곡된 전쟁 행위를 축복하는 것이 아닙니다. 아닙니다. 그들은 여러분 가운데에 그리스도의 현존으로 있으며, 여러분 곁에서 걷고, 여러분의 말을 경청하고 동정하는 귀를 기울이고, 여러분이 항상 새롭게 출발하도록 격려하고, 여러분의 일상적인 봉사를 지원하기를 원합니다. 도덕적, 영적 지원의 원천으로서, 그들은 여러분을 모든 단계에서 동반하고, 복음의 빛 안에서 공동선의 추구를 위해 여러분의 사명을 수행하도록 돕습니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, we are grateful for what you do, at times at great personal risk. Thank you because by boarding our storm-tossed boats, you offer us protection and encourage us to stay our course. At the same time, I would encourage you never to lose sight of the purpose of your service and all your activity, which is to promote life, to save lives, to be a constant defender of life. And I ask you, please, to be vigilant. Be vigilant against the temptation to cultivate a warlike spirit. Be vigilant not to be taken in by the illusion of power and the roar of arms. Be vigilant lest you be poisoned by propaganda that instils hatred, divides the world into friends to be defended and foes to fight. Instead, be courageous witnesses of the love of God our Father, who wants us all to be brothers and sisters. Together, then, let us set out to be artisans of a new era of peace, justice and fraternity.
