[틈틈이 영어공부] how goes it with you?

- 영한 : ~이 어때?, 요즘 재미가 어떠십니까?, 어떻게 지내십니까?, 경기는 어떻습니까?

- 영영 : used as an informal greeting

- 활용 : How goes it? / How goes it with you? / How goes it with ~(something)? ~은 어때?

- 동일 : How are you? / How's going? / How are you doing?

Harry is talking to his son Ron. 
(해리가 아들 론과 대화하고 있다.)

Harry: So how goes it with your first job?
해리: 그래 첫 직장은 어때?

Ron: Pretty good. It's part-time but I'm managing to save my money.
론: 아주 좋아요. 파트 타임이기는 하지만 그럭저럭 돈을 모아요.

Harry: Good.
해리: 좋아.

Ron: Senior year is expensive and I wanted to pay for it myself.
론: 졸업반은 돈이 많이 드니 제가 벌어서 내고 싶었어요.

Harry: I know. Your mother told me. I'm proud of you.
해리: 알아. 엄마한테 들었다. 네가 자랑스럽구나.

Ron: Thanks.
론: 감사합니다.

Harry: So you're selling shoes?
해리: 그래 구두를 판다고?

Ron: Yes. You and Mom should come in and buy some shoes. I get an employee discount.
론: 네. 아빠하고 엄마도 오셔서 구두 좀 사세요. 제가 직원 할인을 받거든요.

Harry: Really? You can get us a discount?
해리: 그래? 우리가 사도 할인을 해주는 거냐?

Ron: Yeah. Stop by any time.
론: 그럼요. 언제 들르세요.


[기억할만한 표현]
▶ (one) is managing to (do something): 그럭저럭 ~를 하다.
“I managed to feed the children and get them to school on time.” 
(시간이 빠듯했지만 아이들 밥 먹여서 제 시간에 학교에 데려다 줬어요.)

▶ an employee discount: 직원 할인.
“I get a 30% employee discount where I work.” 
(직장에서 30% 직원 할인을 받아요.)

▶ stop by (a place): (어디에) 잠시 들르다.
“I have to stop by the post office and buy some stamps.” 
(우체국에 잠깐 들러 우표를 좀 사야돼.)
