HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS, READ BY CARDINAL JOSÉ TOLENTINO DE MENDONÇA, HOLY MASS, JUBILEE OF ARTISTS AND THE WORLD OF CULTURE,

Saint Peter's Basilica, 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time, 16 February 2025

In the Gospel we have just heard, Jesus proclaims the Beatitudes to his disciples and to a large crowd of people. We have heard them so many times, and yet they never cease to amaze us: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh” (Lk 6:20–21). These words overturn our worldly mentality and invite us to look at reality with new eyes, with God’s gaze, so we can see beyond appearances and recognize beauty even amidst frailty and suffering.

우리가 방금 들은 복음에서 예수님께서는 제자들과 많은 사람들에게 참 행복을 선포하십니다. 우리는 그것을 아주 여러 번 들었지만 우리는 계속 놀라워합니다. “행복하여라, 가난한 사람들! 하느님의 나라가 너희 것이다. 행복하여라, 지금 굶주리는 사람들! 너희는 배부르게 될 것이다. 행복하여라, 지금 우는 사람들! 너희는 웃게 될 것이다.” (루카 6, 20-21) 이 말은 우리의 세상적 사고방식을 뒤집고, 우리가 새로운 눈으로, 하느님의 눈으로 현실을 바라보도록 초대합니다. 그리하여 우리가 겉모습 너머를 보고, 연약함과 고통 속에서도 아름다움을 인식할 수 있습니다.

The second part of the Gospel passage contains harsh and admonishing words: “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep” (Lk 6:24–25). The contrast between “blessed are you” and “woe to you” reminds us of the importance of discerning where we find our security.

복음 구절의 두 번째 부분은 가혹하고 권고적인 말을 포함하고 있습니다. “그러나 불행하여라, 너희 부유한 사람들! 너희는 이미 위로를 받았다. 불행하여라, 너희 지금 배부른 사람들! 너희는 굶주리게 될 것이다. 불행하여라, 지금 웃는 사람들! 너희는 슬퍼하며 울게 될 것이다.” (루카 6, 24-25) “Belessed are you, 행복하여라”와 “Woe to You, 불행하여라” 사이의 대조는 우리가 어디에서 우리의 안전을 찾을 것인가를 분별하는 것의 중요성을 상기시킵니다.

As artists and representatives of the world of culture, you are called to be witnesses to the revolutionary vision of the Beatitudes. Your mission is not only to create beauty, but to reveal the truth, goodness and beauty hidden within the folds of history, to give voice to the voiceless, to transform pain into hope.

문화 세계의 예술가이자 대표자로서, 여러분은 참 행복의 혁명적 비전의 증거자가 되도록 부름 받았습니다. 여러분의 사명은 아름다움의 창조뿐만 아니라 역사의 주름 속에 숨겨져 있는 진실, 선과 아름다움을 드러내고, 목소리를 내지 못하는 사람들에게 목소리를 주고, 고통을 희망으로 바꾸는 것입니다.

We live in a time of complex financial and social crises, but ours is above all a spiritual crisis, a crisis of meaning. Let us ask ourselves questions about time and about purpose. Are we pilgrims or wanderers? Does our journey have a destination, or are we directionless? Artists have the task of helping humanity not to lose its way and to keep a hopeful outlook.

우리는 복잡한 재정적, 사회적 위기의 시대에 살고 있지만, 우리의 위기는 무엇보다도 영적 위기, 의미의 위기입니다. 우리 자신에게 시간에 대한 질문 그리고 목적에 대한 질문을 던집시다. 우리는 순례자입니까, 방랑자입니까? 우리의 여행에 목적지가 있습니까, 아니면 목적지가 없습니까? 예술가들은 인류가 길을 잃지 않고 희망적인 전망을 유지하도록 돕는 임무를 가지고 있습니다.

Be aware, however, that hope is not easy, superficial or abstract. No! True hope is interwoven within the drama of human existence. Hope is not a convenient refuge, but a fire that burns and irradiates light, like the word of God. That is why authentic art always expresses an encounter with mystery, with the beauty that surpasses us, with the pain that challenges us, with the truth that calls us. Otherwise, “woe to us!” The Lord’s warning is stern.

그러나 희망은 쉽지 않고, 피상적이거나 추상적이지 않다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 아닙니다. 진정한 희망은 인간 존재의 드라마 안에 짜여 있습니다. 희망은 편리한 피난처가 아니라 하느님의 말씀처럼 타오르고 빛을 발하는 불입니다. 그렇기 때문에 정통 예술은 항상 미스터리와의 만남, 우리를 능가하는 아름다움과의 만남, 우리에게 도전하는 고통과의 만남, 우리를 부르는 진실과의 만남을 표현합니다. 그렇지 않으면, “불행하여라!” 주님의 경고는 엄격합니다.

As the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote, “The world is charged with the grandeur of God. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil”. The mission of the artist is to discover this hidden greatness and reveal it, making it perceptible to our eyes and hearts. The same poet also perceived “the leaden echo” and “the golden echo” in the world. Artists are sensitive to these resonances, and through their work, they engage in discernment about the various echoes of the events of this world and help others to do the same. Men and women who represent the world of culture are called upon to eval‎uate these echoes, to explain them to us and to show us which path they lead us down: either they are seductive songs of sirens or the authentic appeals to humanity. You are asked to provide insight in order to help distinguish between what is like “chaff scattered by the wind” and what is solid, “like trees planted by streams of water”, capable of bearing fruit (cf. Ps 1:3-4).

Dear artists, I see in you guardians of beauty who are willing to attend to the brokenness of our world, listen to the cry of those who are poor, suffering, wounded, imprisoned persecuted or refugees. I see in you guardians of the Beatitudes! We live in a time when new walls are being erected, when differences become a pretext for division rather than an opportunity for mutual enrichment. But you, men and women of the world of culture, are called to build bridges, to create spaces for encounter and dialogue, to enlighten minds and warm hearts.

친애하는 예술가 여러분, 저는 여러분 내부의 아름다움의 수호자를 봅니다. 그들은 기꺼이 우리 세상의 부서진 이들을 돌보고, 가난하고, 고통 받고, 부상당하고, 투옥되고, 박해 받거나 난민인 사람들의 외침에 귀 기울입니다. 저는 여러분 안에 참 행복의 수호자들을 봅니다. 우리는 새로운 장벽이 세워지고, 다름이 상호 강화의 기회보다는 분열의 구실이 되는 시대에 살고 있습니다. 그러나 문화세계의 남녀 여러분은 다리를 놓고, 만남과 대화를 위한 공간을 창조하고, 생각과 따뜻한 마음을 밝히도록 부름을 받았습니다.

Some might say: “But what is the use of art in our wounded world? Are there not more urgent, more practical, more pressing things to do?”. And yet, art is not a luxury, but something that the spirit needs. It is not a flight from reality, but a charge, a call to action, an appeal and a cry. Educating about true beauty is educating about hope. And hope is never separated from the drama of existence; it runs through our daily struggles, the hardships of life and the challenges of our time.

어떤 사람들은 “그러나 우리 상처 받은 세상에 예술이 무슨 소용이 있습니까? 더 시급하고 더 실용적이고 더 급한 일들이 있지 않습니까?”라고 말할 수 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 예술은 사치가 아니고 정신이 필요로 하는 것입니다. 그것은 현실로부터의 도피가 아니라 부과, 행동 요구, 호소 및 외침입니다. 진정한 아름다움에 대해 교육하는 것은 희망에 대한 교육입니다. 그리고 희망은 결코 존재의 드라마에서 분리될 수 없습니다. 희망은 우리의 일상적 투쟁, 삶의 어려움, 우리 시대의 도전을 관통합니다.

In the Gospel we have heard today, Jesus proclaims as blessed those who are poor, afflicted, meek and persecuted. It is a change of mentality, a revolution of perspective. Artists are called to take part in this revolution. The world needs prophetic artists, courageous intellectuals and creators of culture.

우리가 오늘 들었던 복음에서, 예수님께서 가난하고 괴로워하고 온유하고 박해 받는 사람들은 행복하다고 선포 하십니다. 그것은 정신의 변화, 관점의 혁명입니다. 예술가들은 이 혁명에 참여하도록 부름 받았습니다. 세상은 예언적 예술가들, 용기 있는 지식인 및 문화 창작자들을 필요로 합니다.

Let the Gospel of the Beatitudes guide you, and may your art be a herald of a new world. Let us see your poetry! Never cease searching, questioning and taking risks. True art is never easy; it offers the peace of restlessness. And do not forget that hope is not an illusion; beauty is not a utopia. Yours is not a random gift but a calling. Respond, then, with generosity, passion and love.

참 행복의 복음이 여러분을 인도하도록 맡기십시오. 그러면 여러분의 예술이 새로운 세상의 헤럴드가 될 것입니다. 여러분의 시를 봅시다. 찾고, 질문하고, 위험을 감수하는 것을 절대로 멈추지 마십시오. 진정한 예술은 결코 쉽지 않습니다. 그것은 불안함의 평화를 제공합니다. 그리고 희망은 환상이 아니라는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 아름다움은 유토피아가 아닙니다. 여러분의 재능은 무작위 선물이 아니라 소명입니다. 그러므로 관대함, 열정, 사랑으로 응답하십시오.

Brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Today in the Vatican the Eucharist was celebrated, dedicated in particular to the artists who have come from various parts of the world to experience the Jubilee days. I thank the Dicastery for Culture and Education for the preparation of this appointment, which reminds us of the importance of art as a universal language that spreads beauty and unites peoples, contributing to bringing harmony into the world and silencing every cry of war.

교황님의 삼종기도 전 말씀

형제자매들, 복된 주일입니다. 오늘 바티칸에서 특별히 희년을 기념하기 위해 전 세계 여러 지역에서 온 예술가들을 위한 미사가 봉헌되었습니다. 저는 이 행사를 준비한 문화와 교육 Discastery에 감사드립니다. 이 행사는 아름다움을 퍼뜨리고 사람들을 통합시키는 보편적 언어로서의 예술의 중요성과 세상에 조화를 가져오고 모든 전쟁의 외침을 침묵시키는데 기여하는 예술의 중요성을 상기시켜줍니다.

I wish to greet all the artists who have participated: I would have liked to be among you but, as you know, I am here at the Gemelli Hospital because I still need some treatment for my bronchitis.

저는 참여한 모든 예술가들에게 인사드립니다. 저는 여러분 가운데에 함께 있기를 원했지만 여러분이 아시다시피 여전히 기관지염 치료 때문에 Gemelli 병원에 있습니다.

I greet all the pilgrims present in Rome today, especially the faithful of the diocese of Parma, who have come on a diocesan pilgrimage, led by their bishop.

I invite everyone to continue to pray for peace in tormented Ukraine, Palestine, Israel and all the Middle East, Myanmar, Kivu and Sudan.

Thank you for the affection, prayer and closeness with which you are accompanying me in these days, and I would like to thank the doctors and healthcare workers in this hospital for their care: they do such a valuable and tiring job, let us support them with prayer!

요즘 여러분이 애정, 기도, 그리고 친밀함으로 저를 동반해주신 것에 대해 감사드립니다. 그리고 이 병원의 의사들과 의료 종사자들에게 감사의 말씀 전합니다. 그들은 가치 있고 힘든 일을 하고 있습니다. 기도로써 그들을 지지합시다.

And now let us entrust ourselves to Mary, “Full of grace”, that she may help us be, like her, chorists and creators of the beauty that saves the world.
