Clarity Comes Through Obedience
“My troubles are many; deliver me from my distress.”
— Psalm 25:17
There are times when our hearts become filled with anxiety and confusion. We do not know what to choose, how to respond, or which way to go. The more we think, the more complicated everything seems to become. The psalmist also experienced this kind of distress and cried out to God for deliverance.
But there is a common mistake we make in times of spiritual confusion: we think that if we simply think harder, we will eventually find the answer.
Oswald Chambers reminds us that spiritual confusion is not overcome merely by thinking. It is overcome through obedience. As we obey, discernment comes.
This is an important spiritual principle. Sometimes we are confused not because God has failed to speak, but because we have not yet obeyed what He has already made clear.
If God has told us to forgive, we should forgive. If He has told us to love, we should love. If He has told us to be truthful, we should be truthful. If He calls us to pray, we should pray. If He calls us to draw near to His Word, we should open His Word.
Obedience does not begin after we understand everything. Often, we begin to understand more clearly after we obey what God has already shown us.
Paul warned the Corinthians:
“But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 11:3
Spiritual confusion is not merely a matter of having too many thoughts. The deeper danger is that our hearts and minds may be drawn away from sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
So if your heart feels troubled or confused today, pray this simple prayer:
“Lord, instead of showing me everything I need to know, show me what I already know but have not yet obeyed.”
Then obey that one thing.
Obedience may not immediately answer every question, but it brings us back to Christ and opens the way for spiritual discernment.
Do not try to understand everything today. Ask God to show you the one thing you need to obey—and take that step of obedience.
That may be where clarity begins.
