This book has a philosophic title and I was wondering who the wirter was.
I could get the information about her and this book from its cover.
This book was the first one of Garson McCullers at her 23 and was picked as one of
must-read 100 books by New York Times.
And she has incredible gloomy look considering her age.
I heard she was very ill at that time and she became a handicapped person
when she was 28. I guess her physical pain made her think about her life deeply and
write this book also.
Through this book, I could meet one mute named Mr. Singer.
whenever people talked to Mr. Singer, he just smiled at them.
Ironically, people thought he could understand what they said to him and got the peace
while talking to him. They just came to Mr. Singer as if he were their friend.
I think people in this book have their own mental scars. They were like social losers.
A widowed bar owner, a failed drastical socialist, one teenage girl who wanted to play
piano and a black docter who deserted his own children....
They just talked about their thought continually even though they couldn't get any answer
from Mr. Singer. They needed someone to listen to them and they choose Mr. Singer
cause he couldn't add something critical to them. Like a wall, he just stayed around them.
He was willing to provide his home and prepared something to eat for people.
I found an interesting thing. Mr. Singer liked to talk also but around him, there's no one
who could listen to him. Only his friend, Antonapoulos was the only one who could listen to
him. But now he was sent to other place far away.
This situation is quite uncomfortable for me. I feel like seeing the gray picture.
Desperate people, unconnected relationship, a lonely seek for one who can listen to them.
The writer already seemed to know what the human-being is.
Maybe the story line might not be important to understand this book.
I could also find the confliction between the white and the black.
That was one cruel social problem of that time but that was not that important factor
of this book too.
I think she just wanted to show something that existed inside us.
If I don't finish reading this book, I might not find what she wanted to tell me.
Through the internet search, I discovered one piano song with the same title.
I don't know whether that music came from this book or not.
But when I heard that, my mind also calmed down like the melody of that song.
첫댓글 Oh, you've finally kicked off the book....Enjoy yourself!
Hey! Field What happened to you? I couldn't find you here and there. Hope you talk to you again.
