revêtir : 입다, 입히다
Monsieur Linh tells her that in that case he needs a few minutes to dress her. A doctor is an important person. They need to make a good impression on him. The old man takes the box which his friend had given him. He takes out the beautiful dress and puts it on Sang diû. She looks wonderful. She really does look like a young princess. The two women look on with a smile. The young children from the dormitory have come up to have a closer view of the dress, but their mothers call them back in an unpleasant tone of voice.
On y étouffe. On a l’impression qu’on va s’écraser bientôt.

A car takes them through streets he has never seen. It is the first time that Monsieur Linh has travelled in a car. He is frightened. He cowers in the corner of the seat and clutches his little girl to his chest. She does not seem anxious. Her beautiful dress glistens in the reflections of the daylight. Why does the car go so quickly? What is the purpose? Monsieur Linh remembers the rhythm of the carts drawn by the buffalo, the long, smooth, swaying movement that sometimes caused you to fall asleep and sometimes to dream, and the landscape that changed with a precious slowness, a slowness that allowed you to look properly at the world, the fields, the forests, the rivers, and to talk to the people you came across, to hear their voices, to exchange news with them. The car is like a chest hurled from the top of a bridge. You suffocate inside it. All you can hear is a muffled roaring sound. The landscape spins by outside. You can’t take any of it in. You have the impression that you are soon going to crash.
The doctor is a tall young man. The woman from the quayside goes into the surgery with Monsieur Linh. So does the girl. The woman from the quayside speaks to the doctor, and then she leaves. The girl stays behind to interpret. The doctor looks at the child in the old man’s arms and asks the girl questions. She answers him. The doctor nods his head. He asks other questions, which the girl translates:
“Uncle, how old are you?”
“I am old,” Monsieur Linh replies, “very old. I was born in the year of the tornado that devastated the village.”
“You don’t know how old you are?” asks the girl in amazement.
“I know that I am old, that’s all. Knowing my age would not make any difference to me.”

The girl speaks to the doctor, who makes a few notes. The questions continue. The girl translates them. Has Monsieur Linh already had an operation?
In his homeland, did he have a doctor? Did he take any regular treatment? Does he suffer from high blood-pressure? From diabetes? Does he have any problems with his hearing? With his sight?
The old man understands half of what the girl is saying to him. He looks at her in amazement.
“You don’t know my country,” he says to her eventually. “The only doctor I ever saw was a very long time ago, when the army needed me. Otherwise, we looked after ourselves in the village. If the illness was benign, we got better. If it was malignant, we died. That’s all there is to it.”
La jeune fille traduit au médecin. Celui-ci prononce quelques mots.

paravent : 병풍, 칸막이

The girl translates for the doctor, who says a few words. The girl tells Monsieur Linh that he wants to examine him. He will have to undress. She will stay behind the partition.
The old man entrusts Sang diû to her. He passes her gently into the arms of the girl, who takes her carefully and makes a kind comment about the dress.
Monsieur Linh is touched. He thinks of the fat man, his friend.
The doctor examines him. He places his hands on his emaciated body with its smooth brown skin. He makes him open his mouth, he looks into his eyes and his nose, he puts strange instruments on his chest and around his arms, he taps his knees with a small hammer, he examines his stomach. He indicates to him that he may get dressed.
