Some people might agree that people should not pay for using public transportation systems since it makes very young people or even very old people to use the transportations which makes them more comfortable; nevertheless, others might insist that it is a better choice for people to pay for the transportation system in terms of paying more taxes to maintain this policy. However, this is a very complicate question to choose or determine which option or choice is better for people to pay for their public transportation. There should be pros and cons for this question, so I will contrast and compare what to do in detail in the next following paragraphs.
On the one hand, not paying for the public transportation system enables the unproductive population to travel. For young children or even for very old men, it is impossible for them to make any money which means that they cannot afford taking a ride on the public transportations. Some people might think that very young and old people can have their families to pay transportation fees for them. However, it is not a hard thing to figure out that not all young people and old people such as orphans and self-living seniors live by themselves without having a family to look after them. To give one of my personal experiences for an example, I used to be alone in my house since my parents were both working in order to earn our family’s living. Whenever I get back from, it was a usual thing to return to the hollow and lonely home. The place where my home is located was an isolated place at the time where there was a single bus lane that passes by. One day, I decided to go and visit my mother selling clothes at Seoul. I waited for the bus which would drive me to my mother. However, I did not know that I had to switch a few lanes before reaching my destination. I only had enough money to go and come back. After switching to the second lane, I got off at a very strange place. I did not know where I was and was in great panic that made me unable to think of any good plans. Luckily, a woman passing by saw me crying at one side and asked what was going on. I explained my situation and she generously said that she will take me to the place. Thanks to the woman, I was able to see my mother again. If it was not for the woman, I would probably a lost child and possibly might have been taken by some bad people. Additionally, if the government had allowed me to ride the bus without any fee, such problem would never even had happened.
On the other hand, making and attaining such policy makes us to pay for the products and services that people use. If everyone gets the opportunity to ride on the public transits for no charge, it will directly influence the amount and the price of the taxes we pay because the money that is used for maintaining public transits would come out of our pockets. Some people might cast doubt on my opinion because they insist that the government is wealthy enough to support the policy without us paying for extra charges. Nevertheless, it is not a hard thing to figure out that our government now has just enough budgets that are used for policies now and an additional usage may put our country in a financial crisis. To give one of my second handed experiences for an example, my friend who is living in France always tells me about how expensive the country’s taxes are. He explains that it was not until the free-transit policy that the amount of taxes arose. He says that many of the people rather uses their private vehicles such as cars and even bicycles to go to work and most of the time, the transportations are empty even it is free. According to a survey conducted by KSC, the Korean Statistical Center of South Korea, on 3000 students taking class at the National University of Seoul about their opinion on the topic, whether people should pay for the public transportation systems. Surprisingly more than 80% of the surveyors answered that the public transportation systems should charge all the people. They also added that the increasing taxes for them will increase the general product price for the whole company which can lead to a financial crisis.
As a conclusion, it really depends on who uses the transportation systems. For people who can’t possibly earn money such as young children or very old men should be allowed not to get charged, but for the self-dependent population, it is not a bad idea to charge them in terms of getting enough money and actually being able to pay both the taxes and transportation fees.
