The trial of former first lady Kim Keon-hee, accused of receiving various bribes and intervening in personnel appointments and nominations for businesspeople and public officials—the so-called "selling of official positions" scandal—will be broadcast live on TV on **May 26**.

Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 21 (Judge Cho Soon-pyo) announced on **June 23** that it had approved a request by Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki’s team and a broadcaster to relay the sentencing for Kim’s charges under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on May 26.

Kim is charged with receiving bribes from businesspeople and public officials before and after the inauguration of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. She allegedly received a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace worth 55.6 million Korean won from Lee Bong-gwan, chairman of Seohee Construction, along with a request to appoint her son-in-law, former prosecutor Park Sung-geun. She also allegedly accepted gold items worth 2.65 million Korean won from Lee Bae-yong, former head of the National Education Committee. Additionally, she is accused of receiving a Vacheron Constantin wristwatch worth 39.9 million Korean won from Seo Sung-bin, CEO of Drone Dom, and a painting by Lee U-fan titled *From Dots No.800298* worth 140 million Korean won from former prosecutor Kim Sang-min. A Dior bag received from Pastor Choi Jae-young is also cited as a bribe.

The special counsel team demanded a prison sentence of seven years and six months for Kim last month. They stated, “Kim’s crimes involved repeatedly accepting bribes by leveraging her position as the president’s spouse, treating the president’s authority as a tool for private transactions—a form of ‘selling of official positions.’ This is akin to public officials taking bribes and warrants severe punishment.”

Kim’s legal team denied the charges. Lee Bong-gwan and others claimed, “No personnel requests were ever made,” adding, “Kim has endured unbearable humiliation after her past actions were distorted, branding her as a villain.” In her final statement, Kim apologized, saying, “I deeply regret my reckless actions and sincerely apologize to the public.”

Previously, Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 27 (Judge Woo In-sung), which handled Kim’s alleged involvement in Deutsche Motors stock price manipulation, also permitted a live broadcast of her first-instance sentencing for violating the Capital Markets Act.
