Today's Devotional Prayer: Coming to God by Grace
“and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
— Romans 3:24 (NIV)
Sometimes we think that we need to pray harder in order for God to accept us or answer us. We may believe that if we pray longer, speak more earnestly, or show greater devotion, God will be more moved by our prayers.
But the gospel tells us something completely different.
We are not accepted by God because of our effort or religious performance. We are “justified freely by his grace” through the redemption accomplished by Jesus Christ.
Therefore, prayer is not an attempt to impress God or persuade Him to love us. Prayer is our response to the grace that God has already given us in Christ.
Oswald Chambers emphasized that the heart of prayer is not simply asking God for things, but entering into communion and oneness with God. Prayer is not merely an exercise we perform; it is a life of fellowship with God.
Jesus said:
“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
— Matthew 6:6
The important question is not simply how much we pray, but before whom we are praying.
Prayer is not a time to prove our spiritual worthiness to God. It is a time to come before our Father who has already accepted us in Christ.
So when you pray today, do not try to impress God with your words or your effort. Come honestly. Come humbly. Come as a child to the Father.
Ask yourself:
“Am I praying to move God, or am I praying to draw near to God?”
Prayer is not our effort to make God love us.
Prayer is entering into the grace of the God who already loves us in Christ.
