10 things to watch in 2012-13Can Kobe share the ball, and other things to look for this seasonUpdated: October 26, 2012, 3:34 PM ET By Tom Haberstroh | ESPN Insider
It seems we've been saying it for weeks now, but the NBA season finally is around the corner. The preseason is all but wrapped up and the season opener is merely days away. (Apparently, the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics are playing on Tuesday night?)
1. How much power will Kobe Bryant cede to newcomers Steve Nash and Dwight Howard?
2. Is Omer Asik a Most Improved Player candidate?
How quickly can a player be perceived as underpaid to overpaid and back to underpaid again? We could find out with Asik this season. The former Chicago Bulls center, who signed a three-year, $25 million deal with the Houston Rockets in the offseason, could be a Most Improved Player candidate merely on per-game stats alone. Anchoring the "Bench Mob" of the Bulls' second unit last season, Asik averaged 3.1 points and 5.3 rebounds a game, and the Rockets thought that was worth approximately $8.3 million per season.
The hand-wringing over the contract was almost as prevalent as Asik has been on the boards this preseason. The 26-year-old is leading the NBA in rebounding with 11.5 boards a game, and the remarkable part is that he's managing to pull that off in just 25.5 minutes per game. On a per-36-minute basis, Asik is averaging a whopping 11.3 points and 16.2 rebounds, up from his 7.6-point, 13-rebound pace last season. Yes, it's preseason, but don't discount the value of coach Kevin McHale's work with Asik's raw talent. Throw in Asik's role as a defensive straitjacket and we could be looking at the early favorite to take Ryan Anderson's crown as MIP.
3. Don't sleep on Perry Jones III
How's this for competitive balance? Shortly after playing in the Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder drafted a player who recently was considered the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft class. That might be twisting the truth a little bit. But it is no lie that at one point, Jones' stock was higher than that of any player in the draft before concerns about his knee and motor caused mass hysteria among GMs.
And now he's playing for the Western Conference champs and playing with the promise of a top prospect. Jones scored 9.8 points per game in the preseason on 57 percent shooting while playing big minutes next to the Thunder's elite. A 6-foot-11 player who can play multiple positions and flash a 3-point game? Yikes. He's still raw, but with the Thunder's winning culture, Jones is a good bet to be another Serge Ibaka-type draft steal.
Here's a list of players who registered a higher rebounding rate the past two seasons than Lopez: Landry Fields, Evan Turner, Paul George and Earl Boykins. Well, maybe I threw in that last one, but the other three are absolutely true. There's no plausible reason that a healthy 7-footer with a solid frame should haul in fewer rebounds than some 2s, but Lopez didn't exactly have a clean bill of health. A bout of mononucleosis and a series of foot injuries have grounded Lopez, so he did have an excuse.
But not anymore. Lopez boasts a cleaner bill of health than he has in years and he's playing like it. After averaging a pathetic 6.0 rebounds every 36 minutes at center, Lopez is collecting 10.1 rebounds per 36 minutes in the preseason. All of the preseason caveats apply, but if Lopez was going to quiet the doubters this season, he's off to a good start in the rebounding column.
Of course, when you have LeBron James and Dwyane Wade on the squad, the rebounding battle is a little easier. The Heat's starting lineup posted an average rebounding rate of 50 percent in the postseason, according to NBA.com's stats tool, but they could raise that figure if they insert Udonis Haslem or Mike Miller in place of Battier, who shared the same rebounding rate last season as Ty Lawson. They will be tested underneath and teams will look to bludgeon them inside. They have the necessary athleticism to compensate for size, but can they maintain the requisite intensity for a full season?
If you're looking for a reason the Toronto Raptors jumped to a 5-1 start in the preseason, look no further than the immediate impact of the 20-year-old Lithuanian big man, Jonas Valanciunas (pronounced Val-ehn-chew-ness). The near-7-footer has been an instant presence underneath, averaging more than eight points and eight rebounds in his past four games as the Raptors' starter. More impressively, he's kept his fouls down to a manageable level while seemingly blocking everything in sight.
It's too early to say whether Valanciunas is ready to be a legitimate NBA starter, but there's a lot to like about this kid as he tests the NBA waters for the first time. His youthful energy (he's probably calling for the ball as you read this) and underrated skills on the block has befuddled opposing defenses already. If Valanciunas is ready to be a cog in the middle, Dwane Casey could coach this team into the playoffs.
Just kidding. In all seriousness, have you seen this guy in the preseason? So far, the Utah big man has displayed a combination of brute strength and stellar productivity that has Jazz fans experiencing sudden flashbacks to a young Karl Malone. Kanter reportedly shed 50 pounds since his peak weight upon arrival in Utah, then put on 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. His numbers this preseason? 13.1 points and 9.3 rebounds in just 21.1 minutes a game.
People forget that he turned 20 a few months ago, so this guy is just getting started in his NBA career. The Jazz have a good problem on their hands in that they have four starter-caliber big men in Paul Millsap, Derrick Favors, Al Jefferson and Kanter. Keep a close eye on the Jazz; a breakout season from Kanter could open up all sorts of trade possibilities.
With the knee ailments of Iman Shumpert, Tyson Chandler and Amar'e Stoudemire; J.R. Smith's Achilles' issue; and Marcus Camby's calf soreness, the New York Knicks' roster is littered with flat tires. That wouldn't be such a concern if they didn't fill out the roster with petrified players, but the Knicks have a serious problem on their hands if 40-year-old Kurt Thomas is their only healthy big man with NBA experience (no, I'm not counting Rasheed Wallace).
Without Chandler, the truth is that this could be the worst defensive team in the NBA. Carmelo Anthony at the 4 only works if the Knicks can buoy him with Chandler's defensive presence. Luckily for Knicks fans, Chandler's knee injury isn't supposed to be serious, but don't forget that it wasn't long ago when Chandler was considered the most injury-prone big man in the league.
It feels as if we've been asking ourselves that question for the past few years, but Holiday's play has raised some eyebrows this preseason. With a 27-point outburst in the opener, the buzz about Holiday's improvement started a couple of weeks ago, but the bizarre reluctance (forbiddance from Doug Collins?) to attack the free throw line remains.
Last season, Holiday had one of the lowest free throw rates (frequency, not percentage) among starting point guards and it hasn't been much better in the preseason. His ratio of free throw attempts to field goal attempts stood at .14 last season and has inched up to just .15 this preseason. If he can't make use of the free throw line, don't count on him having the breakout season that many expect.
With Ray Allen leaving town and the tandem of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett a year older, the Celtics could use some more scoring from Rondo this season. As we saw by his scoring blitz in the playoffs, we know he's capable of turning it up a notch. While Jason Terry and Jeff Green should help matters, Rondo will be asked to boost his efficiency as a scorer.
Last season, he ranked 52nd in true shooting percentage among point guards, thanks to a putrid free throw percentage (60 percent) and lack of 3-point range. Is he showing signs of development in those areas? It's a mixed bag. Sure, it's a tiny sample size, but Rondo is shooting 17-of-22 (77.3 percent) from the free throw line. That's good, but he's taken just six 3-point shots this preseason, missing four of them. If he wants to take that next step as a scorer, it won't just magically happen; he'll need to pound the high-efficiency areas.
