Today's passage can be interpreted in two ways. Jesus desired fruit when it was not the season for delicious figs to ripen. Alternatively, it could be when the fig tree should have borne its first fruit, but it was barren. In other words, one could say the tree missed its timing. Nonetheless, when Jesus desires fruit is precisely when fruit should be produced.
Today's passage speaks about Israel as Jesus entered Jerusalem to face crucifixion, but it also addresses the present-day church, the holy people of God. When entering Israel, there should have been fruit, but the lack thereof has caused Israel to wither away. Similarly, when Jesus returns, He desires fruit from us, yet we make excuses, claiming it's not the right time.
Now is the time to bear the fruit of faith. We must ensure we multiply the talents given to us and produce the fruit of the Word given to us.
