People across the continent cope with high temperatures.

2026년 5월 말부터 유럽은 심각한 폭염(暴炎)에 시달렸다. 오스트리아, 벨기에, 체코, 덴마크, 프랑스, 독일, 헝가리, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 폴란드, 루마니아, 스페인, 영국 등지에서 최고 기온 기록이 경신되었다. 첫 번째 폭염은 5월 24일에 시작되었으며, 평년보다 높은 기온으로 인해 여러 명의 사망자가 발생했다. 5월 기온은 역대 최고치를 기록했으며, 기후변화로 인해 중부 유럽의 여름이 일찍 시작되었다. 서유럽이 가장 큰 피해를 입었으며, 프랑스, 아일랜드, 영국에서 기록적인 고온이 보고되었다. 포르투갈은 40°C(104°F)를 기록했고, 스페인은 38°C(100°F)까지 오를 것으로 예상되었다. 두 번째이자 더욱 심각한 폭염은 하지(夏至) 며칠 전인 6월 17일에 시작되었다. 프랑스 기상청(Météo-France)은 6월 23일이 1947년 측정 시작 이후 프랑스에서 가장 더운 날이었다고 발표했는데, 피소스(Pissos)에서는 44.3°C(111.7°F), 보르도(Bordeaux)에서는 42.1°C(107.8°F), 파리에서는 6월 최고 기온 기록인 40.9°C(105.6°F)를 기록했다. 6월 26일 세계기상기구(WMO)는 이 폭염이 향후 2주 동안 서유럽, 중유럽, 남유럽 여러 지역에 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상되며, 폭염의 중심이 발칸반도로 이동할 가능성이 높다고 밝혔다. 6월 28일 세계보건기구(WHO)는 6월 21일 이후 유럽 전역에서 고온과 관련된 초과 사망자가 1,300명을 넘어섰다고 발표했다. 7월 1일 스페인 보건부 보고서에 따르면 초과 사망자 수는 2,000명을 넘어섰다. 세계기상귀인분석기구(World Weather Attribution)의 신속한 원인 분석에 따르면, 이 사건은 조사 대상 지역에서 기록된 가장 심각한 폭염이었으며, 인간이 초래한 기후변화가 없었다면 1976년 6월에 이와 같은 폭염은 "사실상 불가능했을 것"이라고 결론지었다.
