In today’s text, chief priests, scribes, and elders are in fear of people and not God. When there is an argument with Jesus, it is not about fearing God, but rather fearing people. This is the characteristic of a religious person. It’s the same thing in verse 18 – they want to kill Jesus, but they can’t because they’re afraid of the people.
They try to trap Jesus anyway, but Jesus does not fall into the trap and just dismisses their questions. This kind of wisdom is what we need.
Never side with the chief priests, scribes, or elders - that's the way to ruin. It is a wide path, a path that people like, and a path that we think is right.
Standing on Jesus' side is a narrow path and a path that is difficult for people to understand. Still, we must stand on Jesus’ side and follow the path Jesus took. If you miss Jesus, everything comes to an end. So let’s not let go of Jesus’ words until the end.
