How does Portland's rookie sensation stack up with other young point guards?

이 리스트엔 심지어 타이릭 에반스도 포함돼 있지 않다. 에반스는 포인트 가드로 ROY를 차지했지만 이후에는 볼없이 움직이는 자리로 옮겨졌다. 이야말로 포인트 가드 포지션의 현재와 미래를 대표하는 리스트다.

Superstar athletes

첫째로, 순수하게 신체적인 면을 통한 질문을 보도록 하자. 일단 다음에 나와 있는 친구들이 운동선수로서 정말 얼마나 스페셜한지 평가해 볼 필요가 있다. 웨스트브룩의 경우 나의 눈에는 전반적으로 자기 포지션 중 현재 단독 세계 최고의 운동능력을 가진 것으로 보인다. 로즈는 정말 한끗 차이에 있으며, 둘 다 크고 강인한 바디와 긴 팔을 지녔고, 플러스로 엘리트 퀵니스 및 운동능력을 지녔다.

블레드소도 이 부류에 넣을 수 있다. 세명 모두 매 경기마다 신체적으로 상대방들에 우세를 지닌다. 블레드소와 웨스트브룩이 공격 리바운드 빈도에서 모든 포인트 가드들 중 선두에 있고 또한 지난 세 시즌동안 유지해왔던 것이 놀라운 일도 아니었다 (세 시즌 전 라존 론도와 함께).

할러데이는 유별난 운동선수는 아니지만, 오늘날 기준에서 큰 체형을 갖고 있다는 점에서 솔리드한 운동선수다. 6 피트 4 인치보다 크고 205 파운드를 넘는 체중을 가진 할러데이는 그를 막으려 드는 작은 친구들에 비교하면 핸들링을 갖춘 파워 포워드처럼 보이곤 한다.

Super-skilled guys

Elite passers

Damian Lillard is averaging 18.8 points and 6.3 assists per game.

이런 모든 사항들에 대해 릴라드는 루키로서 멋진 모습이다. 픽앤롤 게임에 출중하고, 플레이들을 진행시킬 때 경기 운영에 신중함을 갖고 있으며, 그리고 자신의 팀이 이기기 위해서 득점을 해야 한다는 점을 인지하고 있다. 어빙과 같은 또는 커리와 같은 슈터는 아니지만, 로즈나 웨스트브룩이나 월의 루키 나이때보다 훨씬 더 뛰어나며, 어쩌면 심지어 지금의 그들보다 뛰어날 것이다.

Go back through the last five drafts and count the number of impact-level point guards the league has absorbed. The list includes a league MVP, Olympians, guys who played in the NBA Finals, rookies of the year, one of the league's best shooters, a few of its top pure athletes, plus one undrafted sensation that took over the league for a spell:

Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Eric Bledsoe, Kemba Walker, Stephen Curry, Jrue Holiday, Brandon Jennings, Ricky Rubio, Jeff Teague, Ty Lawson, Brandon Knight, Jeremy Lin and, yes, James Harden (he is listed as a shooting guard but really plays like a point guard).

This list doesn't even include Tyreke Evans, who won the ROY award as a point guard before being moved off the ball later on. It's quite a list, representing both the present and the future of the point guard position.

This year just one rookie has looked like a long-term starter at point guard so far: Damian Lillard. The only question is: Can he be a star? Let's take a look at how he measures up to what some of the current point guard stars did as rookies:

Superstar athletes

First, let's look at the pure physical side of the question. We need to appreciate just how special some of these guys are as athletes. Westbrook, to my eyes, is the single best overall athlete at his position in the world today. Rose is just a hair off that mark, as both package big strong bodies and long arms, plus elite quickness and athleticism.

Bledsoe can be put in that category, too. All three men physically dominate opponents night after night. It is no surprise that Bledsoe and Westbrook lead all point guards in offensive rebound rate and have for the past three seasons (along with Rajon Rondo three seasons ago).

Holiday is not an exceptional athlete, but he's a solid one in a big frame by today's standards. Taller than 6-foot-4 and weighing more than 205 pounds, he often looks like a power forward with handle compared to the little guys out there trying to guard him.

Lillard simply does not measure up to these guys. Of course, no other point guards do either. He has decent measurements but is not the physical force on the court these guys are, nor does he have anything close to their explosiveness (other than Holiday, who still ranks better than Lillard in this category). Westbrook, Rose and Bledsoe have been compared to LeBron James in terms of their athleticism for their position. That will never happen with Lillard, nor will he ever look like a big forward playing point guard like Holiday sometimes does.

Speedsters

Next let's look at point guards who possess extraordinary quickness, such as Lawson, Jennings, Teague and Wall. Wall might be the fastest overall guard in the league, and the other three men could very well be the quickest. They don't dominate through the air like the above group, but they cause havoc on the ground.

It's not a surprise that Lawson, Jennings and Teague (Wall is still out with an injury) rank in the top 14 overall in steals per game. They use their quickness on both ends of the court, as well as their speed. Their coaches take advantage of their speed as well, as Denver and Milwaukee play at a fast pace (top seven in the league), with Jennings getting 44 percent of his shots within the first 10 seconds of the clock, Lawson getting 48 percent and Teague getting 46 percent despite the Hawks playing at an average pace. For comparison's sake, Holiday (not nearly as fast and quick) gets 32 percent of his shots in those first 10 seconds.

Lillard is clearly quick and fast, but he is not in the range of Lawson, Jennings, Teague and Wall. He's closer to this group than he is the first group, but still a quarter-step behind them. That is fast enough, though, to help him get 41 percent of his shots off in 10 seconds or less. Because it's about quickness to the rim in the half court, not just speed, and craft with the ball plays a factor, too.

Lillard finishes 53 percent of his rim shots, better than the smaller and slighter Jennings, but well behind the blurs of Teague (61 percent) and Lawson (64 percent). As Lillard is just a rookie, we can expect these numbers to go up a bit over time.

Super-skilled guys

Those who are not super quick or ultra-athletic must then be incredibly skilled if they want to be special players at this position. Curry is already an amazing shooter, with the potential to be one of the true shooting greats. He leads all point guards in 3-pointers made this season and is third overall in the league. Get used to this.

Walker is very quick, but it's his handle that is special. The ball should make an athlete quicker than he is because it can be used to throw a defender off-balance, and Walker is the perfect example of this. He's not a great shooter, but he is one of the better midrange jump-shooters in the game, currently making almost half of his 16- to 23-foot shots.

Rubio is passing personified, capable of making every offensive player a bigger threat simply because of the way he can lead guys to easy buckets. His handle is tight and his feel for the game is at an elite level. Both talents work to help him create baskets for everyone. He also is skilled as a defender, possibly the most skilled of this entire group. Quick hands and excellent anticipation are his weapons on that end of the court.

Irving, finally, is the perfect combination of size, skill, feel and overall ambition to be great. He's not a stiff as an athlete, but he's not special either. What he is, though, is spectacularly skilled as a dribbler, scorer and shooter. Next to Rose and Westbrook, Irving is the point guard most likely to be an MVP winner one day.

This is where Portland fans can rise and cheer, because Irving is the guy Lillard can be most like, especially if he can match Irving's drive to be the best.

Elite passers

Before we get into how Lillard compares with these players when they were rookies, there is one important skill left to discuss: passing, which is pretty darn important for point guards.

None of the guys on this list are special passers, save Wall and Rubio. The others are solid, sometimes spectacular, but they are not guys who can routinely get buckets for teammates with passes that few others can make. There are no Chris Pauls, Deron Williamses or Steve Nashes, who routinely earn assist rates in the mid-30s or better.

Wall put up an assist rate of 29 as a rookie, far better than any of the others on this list as rookies and as good as any of them have done in any season (and better than most of them -- only Curry, to my eyes, has a chance to be a special passer other than Wall and Rubio). None of these guys came close to Rubio's 36.3.

Lillard is in the big group of solid and willing passers, someone who will improve on his overall passing and game management, but he's likely not a player who will be known for his ability to pass.

Lillard's place

As the league has turned into a place where point guards look to score and need to score without being the classic "ball hog," Lillard looks to be as prototypical as a player can be for that role. He's not quite the explosive scorer Rose and Irving were as rooks, but he's scoring more consistently (and now has a long-range buzzer-beater for a win to his credit) at 19 ppg, which ranks highest among this list as rookies.

His current PER ranks second to Irving's last season for all these guards as rookies. Part of this success is due to his comfort at the position as the season began. Westbrook had to learn how to be a lead guard after not doing much of it in college. Ditto Holiday. Lawson was more of a manager than a scoring guard (a problem that still plagues him sometimes). Curry had to learn how to get teammates involved, while Rose had no clue how to use ball screens (he rarely used them in college).

Lillard is terrific, as a rookie, at all these things. He's excellent in the pick-and-roll game, patient in his game-managing as he lets plays develop, and aware that he must score for his team to win. He's not the shooter Irving is, or Curry, but he is far better than Rose, Westbrook or Wall were at their rookie age, and maybe even today.

We still have a lot to study as Lillard plays out the season, and we won't know much about his defensive talents for another season or two. But it's clear he has a chance to get to the level of Rose, Westbrook or Irving, which is saying a lot. The Trail Blazers, as a franchise, have to be pleased that their pick has, at least, the talent and upside to be a potential All-Star.

He projects to be better than many of the starting guards who have entered the league in the past five seasons or so. And his rookie season has the potential to measure up to -- and even exceed -- them all, which is huge when you consider how marvelous Irving was just a season ago.

잘 읽었습니다. 저도 릴라드를 참 좋아하지만 몇몇부분에선 공감이 잘 가지 않는군요. 우선 릴라드가 4년을 마치고 들어온 가드죠. 그와 비교된 다른 포인트 가드들중 그와같이 4년을 채우고 들어온 가드들이 없슴에도 단순히 '루키'로서 동등한 비교를 해놓은점입니다. 그리고 수비의 발전성을 기대하면서 웨스브룩, 로즈는 그렇다치고 어빙은 좀 이상하군요. 이 부분은 원문을 봐도 세선수의 수비력을 비슷하게 묶은거 같은데 쏘프씨는 어빙의 수비력을 높게 평가하는 모양입니다. 나머지 선수들보다 어빙의 수비력이 더 낫다기보다 오히려 떨어진다고 생각하는 저로선 더욱 그러하네요.
