이 대통령은 “제가 (집권한 지) 1년 남짓 됐는데, 그동안 (문재인 전) 대통령님께서 5년 동안 만든 성과가 많이 훼손됐다. 외교·안보·남북관계·경제·문화 할 것 없이 너무 많은 것들이 망가졌다”며 “이를 정상화하는 일에 주력하고 있다”고 전했다. 이어 “(문 전) 대통령께서 하신 일과, 노무현·김대중 전 대통령께서 만든 것들은 역사적으로 평가받을 큰 성과라는 생각을 하게 된다”며 “잘 못 느끼다가 많이 훼손되고 나니 느껴진다. 그래서 계속 열심히 복구하려고 노력 중”이라고 했다.

이 대통령은 특히 남북 관계와 관련, “해외 정상들을 만나고, 남북관계를 대하며 느낀 게 회복 불가능할 정도로 (남북관계가) 망가졌다는 생각이 든다. 적대감과 대결 의식이 한두 해 정성을 들이거나 입장을 바꿔서 해결될 수 없는 상황인 것 같다”고 진단했다. 또 “특히 지금 계속 (조사) 결과들이 나오긴 하지만 이 군사 쿠데타·친위 쿠데타를 위해 북쪽을 이 군사적으로 압박한 게 정말 너무 컸던 것 같다. 너무 많이 쌓여 있다”면서도 “민주 정부들이 해왔던 햇볕정책 등 남북 평화 공존 정책은 끊임없이 해야 한다. 잘 이어가도록 하겠다”고 했다.

한편 문 전 대통령은 격무에 시달리는 이 대통령의 건강을 염려하며 “대통령의 건강은 개인의 것이 아니라 공공재”라며 한숨 돌릴 것을 권했고, 이 대통령은 과거 문 전 대통령의 재임 시절 치과 치료 일화를 유쾌하게 꺼내 들며 화기애애하게 화답했다. 이날 20여 분간 공개 대화를 마친 두 사람은 배석자 없이 비공개 대화로 전환해 논의를 이어갔다.
