thumped on the bar. 노래들이 불려졌고 술 잔들이 바에 쿵 하고 내려졌다 At ten o'clock father drove home along a lonely country road,made his horse comfortable for the night,and himself went to bed,quite happy in his position in life. 열 시가 되면 아버지는 호젓한 시골길을 따라서 집으로 말을 몰고 왔다  ,밤을 위해 말을 편하게 하고 그 자신도 삶에서의 자신의 위치에 대해 행복한 채로 잠자리에 들었다 He had at that time no notion of trying to rise in the world. 그 당시에는 세상에서 성공하려고 노력하겠다는 그런 생각이 없었다 It was in the spring of his thirty-fifth year that father married my mother,then a country school-teacher,and in the following spring I came wriggling and crying into the world. 그 것은 아버지가 life I have seen how a literature has been built up on the subject of fortunes to be made out of the raising of chickens. 나중에 나는 책자들이 양계로 부터 만들어 질 수 있는 재산이라는 주제에 대해서 마치 건축 구조물 처럼 It is intended to be read by the gods who have just eaten of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 그것은 무엇이 옳고 그른지에 대한 앎의 나무로 부터 열매를 막 따 먹은 신들에 의해서 읽도록 의도된 것 입니다. It is a hopeful literature and declares that much may be done by simple ambitious people who own a few hens. 그것은 희망에 가득찬 책자들이다 많은 것이 이루어질 수 있노라고  닭을 몇마리 갖지 못한 한낱 야망찬 보통 사람에 의해 Do not be led astray by it. 그것에 의해 이끌려서 길을 잃지 마라 It was not written for you. 그것은 너를 위해서 쓰여진 것이 아니었다 Go hunt for gold on the frozen hills of Alaska,put your faith in the honesty of a politician,believe if you will that the world is daily growing better and that good will triumph over evil,but do not read and believe the literature that is written concerning the hen. 알라스카의 얼어 붙은 언덕에서 금을 찾아 떠나라,정치가의 정직함을 믿으라,원한다면 세상이 나날이 좋아지고 있노라고 믿어라 그리고 선이 악에 대해 승리를 할 거라고 차라리 믿어라 그러나 닭에 대해서 쓰여진 이런 책자를 읽고서 믿지는 말아라 It was not written for you. 그것은 당신을 위해 쓰여진 것이 아니다 I,however,digress. 나는 잠깐 옆 길로 셌었다 My tale does not primarily concern itself with the hen. 나의 이야기는 주요하게는  닭과 관련된 것은 아니다 If correctly told it will centre on the egg. 정확하게 이야기 되자면 그것은 달걀에 중심을 두고 있을 것이다 For ten years my father and mother struggled to make our chicken farm pay and then they gave up that struggle and began another. 십년 동안 엄마와 아버지는 모든 고생을 하였다 우리의 양계장이 수지타산이 맞게 하려고 그런다음 그 노력을 포기하고 다른 것을 시작했다 They moved into the town of Bidwell,Ohio and embarked in the restaurant business. 그 들은 오하이오 비드웰의 읍내로 이사가서 식당업을 시작하였다 After ten years of worry with incubators that did not hatch,and with tiny -- and in their own way lovely -- balls of fluff that passed on into semi-naked pullethood and from that into dead hen-hood,we threw all aside and packing our belongings on a wagon drove down Griggs's Road toward Bidwell,a tiny caravan of hope looking for a new place from which to start on our upward journey through life. 부화가 잘 안 되던 인큐베이터와 한, 그리고 작은 - 뭐 그들 나름대로는 귀여운 -  반쯤 벌거숭이가 된 어린 암탉에서 죽어서 성닭이 된 복슬복슬한 털 덩어리를 가지고 한  근심 걱정의 십년이 지난 뒤에 ,우리는 모든 것을 다 접고는 마차 위에 우리의 재산들을 다 꾸려 넣어서는 그릭스 로드를 따라서 비드웰로 갔다,새로운 장소를 찾아가는,이 곳에서 우리의 성공해가는 여정을 시작할. 희망의 작은 대상 행렬 같았다 We must have been a sad looking lot,not,I fancy,unlike refugees fleeing from a battlefield. 우리는 슬퍼보이는 패거리였음에 틀림이 없었을 것이다,상상해 보건데 전쟁터에서 달아나는 피난자들과 다르지 않은 Mother and I walked in the road. 엄마와 나는 길을 따라 걸었다 The wagon that contained our goods had been borrowed for the day from Mr.Albert Griggs,a neighbor. 마차는 ,우리의 물건들을 싣고 있는, 이웃인 알버트씨에게 빌렸다 그 날을 위해 Out of its sides stuck the legs of cheap chairs and at the back of the pile of beds,tables,and boxes filled with kitchen utensils was a crate of live chickens,and on top of that the baby carriage in which I had been wheeled about in my infancy. 마차의 옆쪽으로는 싸구려 의자의 다리가 삐죽이 나와 있고 침대들과 탁자들 그리고  부엌 용구로 가득 채워진 박스들을 쌓아 놓은 뒤에는 살아 있는 닭들을 넣은 상자가 있었다 그리고 그 꼭대기에는 내가 어렸을 때 이리저리 태워져서 다녔었던 그 유모차가 있었다 Why we stuck to the baby carriage I don't know. 우리가 왜 그 유모차에 집착했는지 나는 모른다 It was unlikely other children would be born and the wheels were broken. 다른 아이들이 나올 것 같지도 않았고 게다가 바퀴도 고장났었다 People who have few possessions cling tightly to those they have. 가진 것이 얼마 없는 사람들은 그들이 갖고 있는 것에 꽤 집착한다 That is one of the facts that make life so discouraging. 그것은 삶이 그렇게나 힘빠지게 하는 사실들 중에 하나이다 Father rode on top of the wagon. 아버지는 마차 위에 타셨다 He was then a bald-headed man of forty-five,a little fat and from long association with mother and the chickens he had become habitually silent and discouraged. 그는 그때는 머리가 벗겨진 사십 오세의 남자였습니다 몸이 약간 붓고 엄마와 닭과 오래 같이 있다보니 아버지는 습관적으로 조용하고 낙담하게 되었습니다. All during our ten years on the chicken farm he had worked as a laborer on neighboring farms and most of the money he had earned had been spent for remedies to cure chicken diseases,on Wilmer's White Wonder Cholera Cure or Professor Bidlow's Egg Producer or some other preparations that mother found advertised in the poultry papers. 양계장에서의 우리의 십년 내내 아버지는 일꾼으로 일하셨습니다,이웃 농장에서,그가 번 돈의 대부분은 닭의 질병들을 치료하기 위한 치료제를 사기 위해 쓰여졌습니다,백색의 기적같은 콜레라 치료약 ,배란 산란기,어떤 조제약들에 쓰여졌습니다.가금류 잡지에서 광고가 된 것을 엄마가 발견한 There were two little patches of hair on father's head just above his ears. 아버지 머리에는 귀 바로 양쪽 위에는 작은 두 개의 머리 떼가 있었습니다 I remember that as a child I used to sit looking at him when he had gone to sleep in a chair before the stove on Sunday afternoons in the winter. 나는 기억합니다 어렸을 때 아버지를 바라보면서 앉아 있곤 했습니다 아버지가 의자에 앉아서 잠에 빠지실 때 ,겨울 일요일 저녁에 스토브 앞의 I had at that time already begun to read books and have notions of my own and the bald path that led over the top of his head was,I fancied,something like a broad road,such a road as Caesar might have made on which to lead his legions out of Rome and into the wonders of an unknown world. 나는 그 때 벌써 책을 읽고 내 자신의 생각을 가지게 되었다 그리고 그의 머리 꼭대기에 난 대머리 진 길은 어떤 넓은 길,시저가 만들었을 법한, 그 길을 따라서 자기 군대를 로마에서 빼내서 알려지지 않은 세계의 경이로 이끌고 가기 위해서 The tufts of hair that grew above father's ears were,I thought,like forests. 아버지 귀의 위에 자라는 털은 숲과 같다고 생각했다 I fell into a half-sleeping,half-waking state and dreamed I was a tiny thing going along the road into a far beautiful place where there were no chicken farms and where life was a happy eggless affair. 나는 반쯤 잠들고 반쯤 깨어있는 상태로 빠져 들었다 그리고 꿈을 꾸었다 내가  그 길을 따라 어떤 먼 아름다운 곳으로 가는 ,양계장이 없는,그리고 삶이란 것이 행복한 계란없는 일인, 작은 것이라고 One might write a book concerning our flight from the chicken farm into town. 책 이라도 한 권 쓸 수 있을 지 모른다 양계농장에서 읍내로의 우리의 도주에 대해서는 Mother and I walked the entire eight miles -- she to be sure that nothing fell from the wagon and I to see the wonders of the world. 엄마와 나는 팔 마일을 온 채로 다 걸어갔다 -- 그녀는 어떤 것도 떨어지지 않게 하느라 그리고 나는 세상의 경이를 보려고 On the seat of the wagon beside father was his greatest treasure. 아버지 옆에 있는 마차의 자리에는 아버지의 가장 커다란 보물들이 있었다 I will tell you of that. 내가 그것에 대해 말하겠다 On a chicken farm where hundreds and even thousands of chickens come out of eggs surprising things sometimes happen. 양계장에서는 ,수백의 수천의 닭들이 알에서 깨어나는 ,때때로 놀라운 일들이 일어난다 Grotesques are born out of eggs as out of people. 괴상한 것들이 알에서 태어납니다 사람에게서 그러하듯이 The accident does not often occur-perhaps once in a thousand births. 그 사고가 종종 일어나지는 않습니다 천번 태어날 때 한번 정도랄까 A chicken is,you see,born that has four legs,two pairs of wings,two heads or what not. 아다시피 다리가 네개,날개가 두 쌍씩이 있는 아니면 머리가 두개 아니면 없는 그런 닭들이 태어납니다 The things do not live. 그 것들은 살지 못합니다 They go quickly back to the hand of their maker that has for a moment trembled. 그들은 잠깐 손을 떤 조물주의 손으로 빨리 돌아 갑니다 The fact that the poor little things could not live was one of the tragedies of life to father. 그 가여운 작은 것들이 살지 못했다는 것이 아버지에게는 삶의 비극중 하나였습니다 He had some sort of notion that if he could but bring into hen-hood or rooster-hood a five-legged hen or a two-headed rooster his fortune would be made. 그는 어떤 종류의 생각을 가지셨던 것 같다,만약에 아버지가 다리가 다섯 개 있는 암탉이라던지 아니면 머리가 두개인 수탉을 성닭으로 키울 수만 있다면 돈을 벌 수 있을 텐데라는 He dreamed of taking the wonder about to county fairs and of growing rich by exhibiting it to other farm-hands. 그는 카운티의 시장들로 그 놀라운 것을 가져가는 꿈,가지고 가서 부자가 되는 꿈을 꾸웠다 다른 농장의 일꾼들에게 전시하여 At any rate he saved all the little monstrous things that had been born on our chicken farm. 어쨋든 그는 우리 양계장에서 태어난 그 작은 괴물 스러운 것들을 보관해두었다 They were preserved in alcohol and put each in its own glass bottle. 알콜에 보관되어져서 각각의 유리병에 담겨졌다 These he had carefully put into a box and on our journey into town it was carried on the wagon seat beside him. 이것 들을 아버지는 조심스럽게 박스에 넣었다 그리고 읍내로의 우리의 여행중에 아버지 옆의 자리에서 운반이 되었다 He drove the horses with one hand and with the other clung to the box. 한 손으로 말을 몰고 다른 한손으로 그 박스를 잡고 있었다 When we got to our destination the box was taken down at once and the bottles were removed. 우리가 목적지에 도착했을 때 그 박스는 즉시 내려져서는 병들은 치워졌다 All during our days as keepers of a restaurant in the town of Bidwell,Ohio,the grotesques in their little glass bottles sat on a shelf back of the counter. 오하이오 비드웰에서 식당의 주인들로 지내던 내내 그 작은 유리병에 들어 있는 괴물들은 카운터 뒤에 있는 선반위에 있었다 Mother sometimes protested but father was a rock on the subject of his treasure. The grotesques were,he declared,valuable. 엄마는 때때로 저항하였으나 아버지는 자기의 보물에 대해서는 요지부동이었다 . 아버지는 이 괴상한 것들은 소중한 것이라고 선언했다 People,he said,liked to look at strange and wonderful things. 사람들은 이상하고 놀라운 것들을 보고 싶어 한다고 Did I say that we embarked in the restaurant business in the town of Bidwell,Ohio? I exaggerated a little. 오하이오 비드웰에서 식당업을 시작한다고 내가 말했던가? 약간 과장한 것이다 The town itself lay at the foot of a low hill and on the shore of a small river. 그 읍내 자체는 작은 언덕에 기슭에 있었다 그리고 작은 강가에 The railroad did not run through the town and the station was a mile away to the north at a place called Pickleville. 기차는 이 마을을 관통해서 지나지는 않았다 그 역은 피클빌리 라는 , 북쪽으로 한 일마일 떨어진 곳에 있었다 There had been a cider mill and pickle factory at the station,but before the time of our coming they had both gone out of business. 거기 역에는 사이더 밀고 피클 공장이 있었다 그러나 우리가 오기 전에 둘 다사업을 접었다 In the morning and in the evening busses came down to the station along a road called Turner's Pike from the hotel on the main street of Bidwell. 아침,저녁에 버스들이 역으로 갑니다  비드웰의 주요로에 있는 호텔에서 출발하여 터너스 파이크라는 길을 따라 Our going to the out-of-the-way place to embark in the restaurant business was mother's idea. 식당업을 시작하기 위해서 그 외진 곳으로 우리가 간다는 것은 어머니의 생각이었다 She talked of it for a year and then one day went off and rented an empty store building opposite the railroad station. 그녀는 그 곳에 대해 일년동안 얘기했었다 그리고 어느날 가 버렸고  역 맞은 편에 있는 빈 상점 건물을 세를 냈다 It was her idea that the restaurant would be profitable. 식당이 이익이 좀 될거라는게 그녀의 생각이었다 Travelling men,she said,would be always waiting around to take trains out of town and town people would come to the station to await incoming trains. 여행하는 사람들이 읍내에서 빠져나가는 열차를 타려고 주변에서 기다리고 있을거야 ,마을 사람들이 들어오는 기차를 기다리려 역으로 올거야 라고 그녀는 말했다 They would come to the restaurant to buy pieces of pie and drink coffee. 그들은 아마 피자 조각을 사고 커피를 마시기 위해 식당으로 올거야 Now that I am older I know that she had another motive in going. 이제 내 나이가 들고 보니 거기로 간 것에는 또 다른 동기가 있었다 She was ambitious for me. 그녀는 나에 대해 야망을 품었다 She wanted me to rise in the world,to get into a town school and become a man of the towns. 그녀는 내가 세상에서 성공하기를 원했다 읍내에 있는 학교로 내가 들어가게 그래서 도회지의 사람이 되기를 At Pickleville father and mother worked hard as they always had done. 피클빌에서 아버지와 어머니는 언제나 그렇듯 열심히 하셨습니다 At first there was the necessity of putting our place into shape to be a restaurant. That took a month. 처음에 이럴 필요가 있었다,우리의 장소를 식당을 위해 모양새를 갖출 Father built a shelf on which he put tins of vegetables. 아버지는 선반을 만들고 야채 깡통들을 진열하였다 He painted a sign on which he put his name in large red letters. 그는 간판을 칠하고 크고 빨간 글자로 그의 이름을 넣었다 Below his name was the sharp command -- "EAT HERE" -- that was so seldom obeyed. 그의 이름 아래에 날카로운 명령이 있었다 "여기서 먹어라" 그렇게나 드물게 복종이 되었다 A showcase was bought and filled with cigars and tobacco. 진열장이 구매 되었고 시가와 토베코로 채워졌다 Mother scrubbed the floor and the walls of the room. 어머니는 바닥을 청소하고 방의 벽도 닦았다 I went to school in the town and was glad to be away from the farm and from the presence of the discouraged,sad-looking chickens. 나는 시내의 학교에 다녔고 농장으로 부터 멀어져서 낙담한 슬퍼 보이는 닭들이 있는 곳에서 멀어져서 기뻣다 Still I was not very joyous. 여전히 아주 기쁘지는 않았다 In the evening I walked home from school along Turner's Pike and remembered the children  I had seen playing in the town school yard. 저녁에 터너스 피크를 따라 학교에서 집으로 걸어왔다 그리고 그 마을 학교 운동장에서 놀고 있던 것을 내가 본 그  아이들을 기억했다 A troop of little girls had gone hopping about and singing. 한 무리의 소녀들이 뛰면서 노래하고 있었다 I tried that. 나는 시도 해봤다 Down along the frozen road I went hopping solemnly on one leg. 그 얼어 붙은 길을 따라 내려 오면서 한쪽 다리로 엄숙하게 깡총 거리고 갔다 "Hippity Hop (bouncer)To The Barber Shop," I sang shrilly.
