얼마 전에 즈루 할러데이의 부상 후 펠리컨스의 이 난감한 드래프트 픽 상황에 대해 엘핫산이 적은 컬럼이 있었습니다.

제가 옮기다가 너무 내용이 우울해서 하다가 접었는데요. (탱킹 전략: 오스틴 리버스를 많이 기용하라 등등의...)

지난 할러데이 영입 트레이드에서 탑 5  보호가 걸린 드래프트 픽을 식서스에 줘서 지금 아주 곤란한 상황입니다.

플레이오프 진출은 점점 멀어져 가고 있고, 밑을 내려가자니 또 만만치가 않습니다.

로터리 추첨의 특성상 리그 꼴찌 5 위를 해도 불안할 수 밖에 없는데, 꼴찌 5 위를 하기도 힘들구요.

결국 성과 한 번 내보자고 프론트 오피스가 위험한 선택을 했다는 것이 저 컬럼의 요지였죠.

일부 팀들에게는, 지금 시점에서 탱킹이 위험 부담이 전혀 없다시피한 사안이다. 당신이 벅스 또는 매직 같은 팀이라면, 지금 시점에서 전환점을 만들 현실적 가능성이 없을 정도로 상황이 아주 나빠져 있다. 그런데 펠리컨스 같은 팀 입장에서의 탱킹은 위험 부담이 있는 모험이다. 이 전략이 먹혀들어가게 하려면 이들은 리그 최약체 다섯 팀 안에 들어야만 한다. 지금 8 연패가 도움이 되고 있긴 하지만, 이번 시즌의 탱킹 경쟁률로 인해 지금 더 안좋은 성적을 가진 팀들이 아직도 일곱이나 된다.

1. Milwaukee Bucks | Status: Tanking | Record: 7-33 (0-4 past week)

최근 몇주 동안 벅스 경영진은 구단주 허브 콜로부터 팀이 향하고 있는 방향으로 동참할 준비가 됐다는 신호를 받아 냈다. 콜과 같은 올드-스쿨 구단주들이 탱킹을 지지할 리야 만무하지만, 시즌의 지금 시점에서 벅스가 전환점을 만들 수 있는 여지는 아주 희박하다.

따라서 젊은 친구들을 플레이시키는 한편, 베테랑 자산들은 트레이드 데드라인에 팔아 드래프트 당일 밤에 잭팟을 터뜨려 그리스 천재 야니스 아데토쿤보에 또 다른 슈퍼스타 잠재력있는 선수를 붙여 주길 희망하는 것이 차라리 낫다.

2. Orlando Magic | Status: Tanking | Record: 11-30 (1-3)

매직의 10 연패가 보스턴을 상대했던 일요일에 제동이 걸렸다. 하지만 이들의 프론트 오피스는 알고 있다. 벅스의 곤경 상황을 감안하면 승리 하나를 올릴 때마다 벅스와의 거리가 훅 멀어지게 된다는 것을.

빅터 올라디포가 최고의 때를 보낸 적이 있고 (수요일 불스 상대로 35 득점 활약 같은), 니콜라 부세비치가 건강할 때는 좋았던 면도 있긴 하지만, 이를 빼면 매직은 빌딩 블락들이 많지가 않다. 남아있는 베테랑들과 함께 제대로 터지지 못한 어린 선수들도 포함해서 팩키지를 만들어 트레이드 데드라인에 보내기 위해 아주 활발히 움직일 것이라 기대해도 좋다.

3. Philadelphia 76ers | Status: Tanking | Record: 13-27 (1-2)    

마이클 카터윌리엄스와 태디어스 영이 약체 상대방에 맞설 때는 경우에 따라 승리할 만큼 식서스를 위협스럽게 만들곤 하고 있다. 이번 주 이들은 뜬금없이 밥캣츠를 잡아냈다. 하지만 정말 나의 눈을 사로 잡은 것은 널렌스 노엘이 이번 시즌 돌아올지 모른다는 발표였다.

지금 노엘은 코트 위 훈련에는 제한이 있다는 것이 분명하기에  2 월 말이나 3 월 초에 돌아올 가능성이 크다. 식서스는 노엘을 천천히 복귀시키려 결심한 듯 보이며, 이는 좋은 일이다. 그래도 일단 경기 감각을 찾기 시작하게 된다면, 섬머 리그와 다음 시즌에서 훨씬 좋은 모습을 보이게 될 것이다. 저 시기엔 또 어쩌면 식서스가 로스터에 탑 10 픽들을 두 명 더 보유하게 될지도 모른다 (아래 펠리컨스 코멘트 참조).

4. Boston Celtics | Status: ??? | Record: 14-28 (1-3)

라존 론도가 금요일에 이번 시즌 처음으로 코트에 발을 딛었고 확실히 아직은 꽤 녹슬어 있는 것이 분명하다. 현재까지 그가 뛴 두 경기 동안, 셀틱스는 레이커스와 매직 둘 모두와 매우 접전의 경기를 치뤘다. 그런데 또 레이커스와 매직이 우리가 여기에서 말하고 있는 팀들 아닌가.

론도와 셀틱스가 대외적으로 오랜 기간 동안 함께 할 것이라 말하고 있지만, 대니 에인지를 알고 있는 사람이라면 누구라도 적당한 딜이 오게 된다면 론도와 이번해 드래프트 픽까지도 포함해서 테이블에 올릴 수 있음을 알고 있다. 에인지는 언제나 자산들을 최대한 활용해 왔었다. 론도를 달라는 오퍼가 만약 탐나는 자산을 주게 된다면, 에인지는 수락할 것이다. 로터리 픽을 달라는 오퍼가 온다고 해도, 마찬가지로 그럴 수 있는 사람이다.

5. Utah Jazz | Status: Tanking | Record: 14-28 (2-2)

재즈는 계속하여 트레이 버크가 라인업에 있을 때는 5할 농구를 플레이하고 있다. 재즈가 팀내 어린 핵심 선수들 중 하나를 트레이드하지 않는 이상 저 상황이 갑자기 끝나진 않을 것이라 본다. 그리고 저런 트레이드는 일어날 가능성이 매우 적다고 나는 생각한다. 이 말은 곧 매주마다 우리가 이들이 랭킹에서 서서히 조금씩 내려가는 모습을 보게 될 가능성이 크다는 것이며, 또한 자바리 파커나 드래프트의 상위 유망주들 중 하나를 얻을 가능성을 망칠 것이라는 뜻이다.

하지만 재즈의 상황을 감안하면 (이미 어린 선수들에게 많은 시간을 주고 있는 상황), 나는 이들이 할 수 있는 최선을 다하고 있다고 본다. 높은 픽을 얻는 것도 중요하지만, 나는 이들이 젊은 코어를 희생시키리라 생각하진 않는다.

6. Sacramento Kings | Status: Rebuilding | Record: 14-25 (1-3)

킹스 팬들에게 팀이 플레이오프 진입에 박차를 가한 것이 아니냐는 잠깐의 기미를 보여준 뒤로, 페이서스, 그리즐리스, 썬더가 이들을 다시 바닥으로 내리 꽂았다. 확실한 것은 킹스가 드마커스 커즌스, 아이재아 토마스, 루디 게이라는 공격 쪽 화력을 갖췄다는 점이다. 하지만 이들의 수비쪽 결핍은 잔혹한 서부의 경쟁률과 결부되어 계속하여 이들을 열악함과 적당함 사이에 고착화시킬 것이다.

소매에 또 다른 빅 트레이드를 숨기고 있지 않는 이상 (리그의 GM들이 킹스가 아주 활발했다고 말하고 있긴 함), 나는 이들이 시즌 나머지 기간 동안 이 리스트에서 6 위와 8 위 사이를 계속 왔다갔다 할 것으로 생각한다.

7. L.A. Lakers | Status: Rebuilding | Record: 16-25 (2-2)

13 경기들 중 12 패를 당한 후로, 레이커스는 지난 주말 셀틱스와 랩터스를 상대로 원정에서 접전의 승리 두 번을 얻어냈다. 보스턴에서의 승리는 큰 충격은 아니었지만, 토론토에서의 승리는 제법 놀라움을 줬다.

레이커스가 말하고 있기를 현재 로터리 픽을 향한 질주가 코비 브라이언트의 복귀 시기에 영향을 미치진 않을 것이라고 한다. 코비가 그동안 겪은 온갖 부상들과 팀 케미스트리에 그가 미칠 파급력이 크기 힘들 것이라는 점을 감안하면, 미치 컵책 및 측근들이 코비의 복귀로 자신들의 탱킹 전략이 탈선되진 않으리라 생각한다고 본다.

8. New Orleans Pelicans | Status: Tanking? | Record: 15-24 (0-3)

펠리컨스가 이 리스트에 처음으로 선을 보였는데, 이들의 올해 드래프트 픽 상황을 보면 더 빨리 들어오던지 아니면 안 들어오던지 했어야 했다. 탱킹이 전에도 그렇고 앞으로도 그렇고 이들에게 매우 위험한 과제인 이유가 만약 픽이 6 위에서 30 위 사이에 걸리면 식서스에게 보내야만 하기 때문이다. 이 말은 곧 이 팀이 시즌 나머지 기간 동안 탑 5 픽을 얻기 위해서 아주 약해져야 한다는 말이다.

즈루 할러데이와 라이언 앤더슨이 빠져 있어서 큰 구멍이 두 개나 있는 것은 맞지만, 앤써니 데이비스가 플로어에 있을 경우 가뜩이나 탱킹 경쟁률이 심한 시즌에서 최약체 다섯 팀들 중 하나로 마감하기란 어려운 일이다. 물론, 이 팀은 8 연패에 빠져 있다. 하지만 이들이 패한 모든 팀들이 위저즈를 제외하고 모두 5할 이상의 팀들이었다. 펠리컨스의 스케줄이 더 쉬워지는 상황에서 (이번 주만 해도 킹스, 피스톤즈, 매직) 이들이 탱크 랭크의 절반 위로 올라갈 일은 없지 않을까 싶다.

9. Cleveland Cavaliers | Status: Trying | Record: 15-25 (2-1)

캡스는 서서히 동부에서의 순위가 상승 중에 있고 플레이오프 자리 마지막을 두고 넷츠와 단 두 경기 차이에 있다. 캡스가 자신들 앞에 있는 팀들 중 어느 팀보다 낫다고 내가 확신할 순 없지만, 불스, 피스톤즈, 랩터스 모두 위태위태해 보이긴 하다. 이와 한편, 지난 몇주 동안 캡스의 로터리 당첨 확률은 8.8 퍼센트에서 3.6 퍼센트로 곤두박질쳤다.

10. Charlotte Bobcats | Status: Trying | Record: 15-23 (0-3)

희한하게도 밥캣츠는 시즌 전체 동안 5할 이상의 승률을 가진 팀들을 상대로는 총 2 승만을 (워리어스와 랩터스) 거뒀음에도 동부에서 플레이오프 자리를 차지할 공산이 있다. 그리고 지난 주 식서스에게 당한 패배는 또한 이들이 계속하여 약체 팀들에게도 만만한 대상임을 새삼 느끼게 해주기도 했다. 밥캣츠가 동부 8 번 시드 밖과 겨우 한 경기 차이나는 것을 감안하면, 이들이 계속하여 플레이오프 진출에 힘을 짜낼 것이다. 하지만 이 팀이 진짜 좋다고 인정받기에는 한참 거리가 있어 보인다.

For some teams, tanking is virtually a risk-free proposition at this point. If you're a team like the Bucks or Magic, things have gotten so bad that there's really no turning around at this point. But for teams like the Pelicans, this is a risky venture. They have to finish among the five worst teams in the league for this strategy to work. An eight-game losing streak helps, but given the tanking competition this season, there are still seven teams with worse records right now.

Here's our weekly look at where the 10 worst teams in the NBA with a shot at the lottery stand in their quest for the No. 1 pick in the draft.

1. Milwaukee Bucks | Status: Tanking | Record: 7-33 (0-4 past week)

In recent weeks Bucks management has gotten signals from owner Herb Kohl that he's ready to get on board with the direction the team is heading. Old-school owners like Kohl are never going to endorse tanking, but at this point in the season there's very little the Bucks can do to turn it around anyway.

So they might as well play their young guys, shop their veteran assets at the trade deadline and hope to hit the jackpot on draft night so they can pair young Greek phenomGiannis Antetokounmpo with another potential superstar.

2. Orlando Magic | Status: Tanking | Record: 11-30 (1-3)

The Magic's 10-game losing streak hit the skids on Sunday against Boston. But their front office knows that, given the Bucks' woes, every win puts them that much further away from the Bucks.

While Victor Oladipo continues to have his moments (like a 35-point performance against the Bulls on Wednesday) and Nikola Vucevic has been good when he's been healthy, the Magic don't have a lot of building blocks after that. Expect them to be very active at the trade deadline trying to package away their remaining veterans with some of their younger players who haven't really worked out.

3. Philadelphia 76ers | Status: Tanking | Record: 13-27 (1-2)

The combo of Michael Carter-Williams and Thaddeus Young continues to make the Sixers just dangerous enough to win the occasional game against a bad opponent. This week they caught the Bobcats by surprise. But it's the announcement that Nerlens Noel may return this season that really catches my eye.

Now that Noel has been cleared for limited on-the-court work, it's possible he could be back in late February or early March. The Sixers seem determined to bring along Noel slowly, which is a good thing. But if he can get started on getting his game legs underneath him, he's going to be that much better going into Summer League play and next season -- when the Sixers could potentially have two more Top 10 picks on their roster (see the Pelicans comment below).

4. Boston Celtics | Status: ??? | Record: 14-28 (1-3)

Rajon Rondo stepped onto the court for the first time this season on Friday against the Lakers and is clearly still quite rusty. In his two games so far, the Celtics played both the Lakers and Magic very tight, but then again, it's the Lakers and Magic we're talking about.

While Rondo and the Celtics are talking publicly about him being with the team for the long haul, anyone who knows Danny Ainge knows that if the right deal comes his way, anything is on the table, including Rondo and this year's draft pick. Ainge has always been about maximizing assets. If an offer for Rondo helps him get a coveted asset, he'll do it. If an offer for the lottery pick blows him away, he'll do that, too.

5. Utah Jazz | Status: Tanking | Record: 14-28 (2-2)

The Jazz continue to play .500 ball with Trey Burke in the lineup. I don't see that ending anytime soon unless the Jazz trade one of their core young players -- something I think is highly unlikely. That means every week we are likely to see them slide a little further down the rankings, perhaps killing their chance at landing Jabari Parker or one of the other top prospects in the draft.

But given the Jazz's situation -- they are already giving big minutes to their young players -- I'm not sure there's anything they can do about it. Getting a high pick is important, but I don't think they'd sacrifice a member of their young core to do it.

6. Sacramento Kings | Status: Rebuilding | Record: 14-25 (1-3)

After giving Kings fans a brief whiff of hope that the team might start pushing for the playoffs, the Pacers, Grizzlies and Thunder brought them back down to Earth. It's clear the Kings have the offensive firepower inDeMarcus Cousins, Isaiah Thomas and Rudy Gay. But their defensive deficiencies coupled with the brutal competition out West is going to continue to leave them stuck between awful and adequate.

Unless they have another big trade up their sleeves -- and GMs around the league have been saying the Kings have been very active -- I think they'll continue to bounce between No. 6 and No. 8 on this board for the rest of the season.

7. L.A. Lakers | Status: Rebuilding | Record: 16-25 (2-2)

After losing 12 out of 13 games, the Lakers won a couple of tight ones on the road this weekend against the Celtics and Raptors. The win in Boston isn't a huge shocker, but the win in Toronto was a mild surprise.

The Lakers are saying that their current run at a top lottery pick won't affect the timing of Kobe Bryant's return. Given all the injuries that Kobe's been through and how difficult he can make things on team chemistry, I'm thinking Mitch Kupchak & Co. aren't convinced the return of Kobe will derail their tanking strategy.

8. New Orleans Pelicans | Status: Tanking? | Record: 15-24 (0-3)

The Pelicans make their first showing on this list and probably would've shown up sooner if not for the status of their draft pick this year. Tanking has been and will continue to be a very risky proposition for them because they must send their pick to the Sixers if it falls between No. 6 and No. 30. That means the team has to be very bad the rest of the season to get into the top 5.

Although Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson are out -- two big losses -- finishing as one of the five worst teams in the Year of Tanking is hard to do when you have Anthony Davis on the floor. Yes, the team is on an eight-game losing streak, but every team they lost to had a winning record except for the Wizards. As the Pelicans' schedule gets easier (the Kings, Pistons and Magic are all on the docket this week) they may be unable to make the push into the top half of Tank Rank.

9. Cleveland Cavaliers | Status: Trying | Record: 15-25 (2-1)

The Cavs are slowly making their way up the standings in the East and are now just two games behind the Nets for the last playoff spot. I'm not convinced the Cavs are that much better than any of the teams ahead of them, but the Bulls, Pistons and Raptors all appear to be vulnerable. Meanwhile, over the past few weeks the Cavs' chances of winning the lottery have plummeted from 8.8 percent to 3.6 percent.

10. Charlotte Bobcats | Status: Trying | Record: 15-23 (0-3)

The Bobcats are improbably in the playoff hunt in the East despite the fact they've defeated a total of two teams all season with a winning record -- the Warriors and Raptors. And a loss to the Sixers this week is a reminder that they continue to be susceptible to bad teams, as well. Given that the Bobcats are just one game out of the No. 8 seed in the East, they'll keep plugging away at the playoffs. But it looks like this team is miles away from true respectability.

Rebuilding: The team's front office didn't go out of its way to sign or trade for quality players this summer, but it was less an attempt to lose games than it was an opportunity to give young players already on the roster a chance to prove themselves.

Trying: The team's front office went out of its way over the summer to strengthen the roster in an attempt to make the playoffs. The team just isn't very good.
