Will Sixers win again this season?Oddly enough, all the losing might be according to plan
Sixers coach Brett Brown is enduring what is possibly a historically bad season.
Michael Carter-Williams is the lone bright spot this season, and even he has experienced injury and a slump. 이로써 세븐티식서스에게는 다음의 ""Who He Play For?
(Henry Sims).
(Hollis Thompson).

During Friday's Basketball Analytics panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy saved his sharpest words for the Philadelphia 76ers, calling their recent play "embarrassing." But for first-year Philadelphia general manager Sam Hinkie, who was at the Sloan Conference, there might not be any reason for embarrassment. What if the 76ers' season is actually going according to plan? Because they sure are acting like a team that's playing for the lottery. Consider Hinkie's first move in Philadelphia, trading 23-year-old All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for the No. 6 pick in last year's draft and the Pelicans' 2014 first-round pick (top-5 protected). Hinkie then drafted Kentucky centerNerlens Noel with the pick from New Orleans. Because he's rehabbing from ACL surgery, Noel hasn't played a game all season. For a team that looks like it wants to compete in two seasons -- not now -- Noel was the perfect pick. Unlike the Milwaukee Bucks, who were trying to compete this season, the Sixers have seemingly aimed for the bottom of the standings. They're all but assured a top-5 pick, might get another in the top 10 from the Pelicans and will add Noel next season. But that promise doesn't make watching the rest of this season any easier. False early hope
Remember when Philly started 3-0? It seems like a different season, but the 76ers really did knock off the two-time defending champion Miami Heat in their home opener, followed by wins over the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards that forced us to ponder whether Philadelphia might make a playoff run. (Spoiler alert: No.) While a series of lopsided defeats quickly brought the Sixers back to reality, they experienced spasms of competitiveness and extraordinary fortune in close games. Philadelphia has gone 8-3 in games decided by five points or fewer and 4-1 in overtime. As a result, after a 101-99 win in Portland capped a four-game winning streak, all on the road, the 76ers stood 12-21 -- five wins away from beating their Vegas line. Since then, they've won just three of their past 27 games. Perhaps Hinkie was looking for takers for the Sixers' remaining veterans, and particularly impending free agents Spencer Hawes and Evan Turner. On the day of the trade deadline, Hinkie dealt both players for second-round picks and expiring contracts. So who's left? Howard Smith/USA TODAY SportsMichael Carter-Williams is the lone bright spot this season, and even he has experienced injury and a slump. Following the deadline, Philadelphia waived Earl Clark and agreed to a buyout with Danny Granger, the two veterans acquired for Hawes and Turner. That left the 76ers with the following roster/home version of "Who He Play For?" • Proven NBA starters (1): Young. • Promising rookies (1): Michael Carter-Williams, whose offense has regressed hard after a fast start established him as the Rookie of the Year favorite. • Injured players (2): Noel and veteranJason Richardson, who is out for the season. • Unproven former first-round picks (2): Arnett Moultrie, left over from the previous regime; and backup point guard/half-court specialist Tony Wroten. • Former first-round picks coming back from injury (1): Elliot Williams, who could never stay healthy in Portland and may have lost the athleticism that made him a promising prospect. • Less-heralded young prospects (3): Lorenzo Brown, a second-round pick who was cut by the Timberwolves in training camp; undrafted rookie Brandon Davies; and Henry Sims, who caught on with the Cavaliers after going undrafted. " • D-Leaguers (3): James Anderson, a former first-round pick who spent much of his first three years in the D-League and followed Hinkie from Houston on a waiver claim; shot-blocking specialist Jarvis Varnado, recently signed to a 10-day contract; and Hollis Thompson, who has flashed potential as a 3-and-D specialist. • Players whose salaries other teams dumped on the Sixers' cap (2): Eric Maynor and Byron Mullens, both acquired in deadline deals that netted Philadelphia a combined three future second-round picks. It's telling that all three players the 76ers kept from their deadline trades -- Maynor, Mullens and Sims -- were buried at the end of the bench at their previous stops. In Philadelphia, they're playing rotation minutes, and Sims has become a starter. Brown doesn't have much choice. With Hawes and Turner gone, his roster now features just two players (Carter-Williams and Young) who would start or even play regular minutes on most other teams. They've combined for 7.6 wins above replacement player (WARP) by my metric this season. After them, Anderson is second on the team with 0.4 WARP. Nobody else rates as better than a replacement-level player, and both Davies and Williams have performed at least one win worse than replacement. Van Gundy summed it up well at Sloan, saying, "If you're putting that roster on the floor, you're doing everything you can possibly do to try to lose." The ugly results
Since Jan. 31, the 76ers have gone from bad to historically awful. Of their 15 consecutive losses, 12 have come by double figures, even with several of the league's worst teams visiting Philadelphia. Just twice in more than a month have the Sixers played at a level better than 10 points worse than an average team -- a six-point loss at Brooklyn and a five-point loss at Utah. Charting Philadelphia's game score (adjusted for opponent and location) with a five-game moving average shows how badly the team has dropped off: ESPN
The heavy load Carter-Williams has had to carry with so little talent around him has proven too much for the rookie. Since the start of January, he's making 41.4 percent of his 2-point attempts and 23.6 percent of his 3s. As Carter-Williams has slumped, so has the team's offense. During the losing streak, Philadelphia has scored 12.6 points fewer per 100 possessions than their opponents typically allow, worse than their defense (giving up 9.6 more points per 100 possessions than usual). It's hard to find teams who have played as poorly as Philadelphia over an extended period. During their 0-11 February, the Sixers were outscored by 19.1 points per game. I found two worse monthly point differentials (minimum seven games) in NBA history. The 1988-89 Clippers were outscored by 19.5 points per game in going 0-14 in January, while the 1949-50 Denver Nuggets got drilled by 22.3 PPG in an 0-8 March. In their defense, the Nuggets -- the westernmost team in league history at the time -- played the entire month away from home. They disbanded after the season, a fate Philadelphia fans don't have to fear. The Sixers have been substantially worse by this measure than the 1972-73 Philadelphia team that finished a record 9-73. Though those 76ers went winless in both October and March, they were never outscored by more than 15 PPG in a month. Even the 2011-12Charlotte Bobcats, who won seven games in the 66-game post-lockout schedule and finished the season on a 23-game losing streak, were never quite this bad. That raises the sobering possibility the Sixers might in fact lose out. My method indicates Philadelphia's "true" talent level right now is about an eight-win team over a full 82-game schedule. Simulations using that rating show the 76ers ending the season on a 36-game losing streak more than 8 percent of the time. Philadelphia wins just once more in 21.6 percent of simulations and averages 2.3 wins the rest of the way, making the Sixers the favorite to finish with the league's worst record. In that case, Philly would head to the draft lottery with the best chance at landing the No. 1 pick and could end up with four top-11 picks from the 2013 and 2014 drafts. If they hit on those picks, the Sixers' future looks promising. The challenge is seeing that when the present is so ugly -- perhaps by design. |
