마이애미 히트에 상당한 뿌리를 두고 있는 분석가로서 탐 하버스트로가 많이 아쉬워했을 듯도 하네요.

그만큼 이번 컬럼의 내용도 긴 느낌이 들구요.

2 번의 경우는 스퍼스가 앞으로도 깨지기 힘들 기록인 최다국적 우승팀이란 면모도 있을 정도로 외국인 선수들이 많긴 하지만,

히트는 딱히 외국인 선수의 문제라기 보다는 노땅 베테랑들을 너무 좋아했다는 점에 초점을 맞추는 것이 낫지 않았을까 싶은데, 모르겠군요. 외국인 선수 풀을 구태여 피했던 것이라면 맞는 얘기일 수도 있고...

Miami must embrace a smaller role for Wade and a global one for the roster

Lack of synergy with Dwyane Wade is hurting the Heat's efficiency.

저 말의 상당 부분은 샌안토니오 스퍼스가 상대방에 맞춰 나온 뒤 NBA 역사에서 가장 지배적인 파이널 퍼포먼스를 보여주면서 명확히 맞는 말이었다. 2 회 디펜딩 챔프들은 자신들의 쓰리-핏 퀘스트의 마지막 구간에서 완전히 대결에서 밀리는 모습을 보여줬다. 시리즈의 총 240 분 중 스퍼스가 뒤쳐졌던 시간은 겨우 47 분 뿐이었다.

하지만 우리가 파이널 결과에 완전하게 놀랄 일은 없다. 당신이 NBA 역사를 보게 된다면, 쓰리-핏 퀘스트에 한정할 경우 히트가 당했던 참패는 예삿일과 별 다를 것이 없음을 발견하게 될 것이다. 저렇게 먼 거리를 달린다는 것은 역경이 따른다는 말이다. 물론, 2000 년대 초반의 로스앤젤레스 레이커스가 이루기도 했고 조던의 시카고 불스는 두 번이나 해내기도 했다. 하지만 2011 레이커스, 1996 휴스턴 로켓츠, 1991 디트로이트 피스톤즈 그리고 1989 레이커스 모두 자신들의 쓰리-핏 퀘스트에서 스윕을 당했다.

게다가 저 무리 중, 오직 1989 레이커스만이 가장 먼 거리인 파이널까지 도달해 봤다.

이제 문제는 다음에 어떻게 될 것이냐다. 문제를 푸는 첫 번째 단계는 우선 자신이 문제를 갖고 있음을 시인하는 것이다. 일단 스퍼스가 확실히 더 뛰어난 팀이라는 점을 지목하며 히트가 몇 가지 이슈들을 인지하고 있는 듯 보인다. 이들이 어떻게 저 이슈들을 풀어야 다음 시즌 더 뛰어난 팀이 될까? 우선 스퍼스의 청사진을 복사하는 것으로 시작할 수 있다.

여기 스퍼스의 모델로부터 나온 세 가지 교훈들이 있다.

1. Bring Dwyane Wade off the bench

5 차전 포스트게임 기자 회견에서, 드웨인 웨이드는 파이널 동안 본인에게 "신체적으로 전혀 문제가 없었다"고 주장했다. 그런데 그의 플레이는 다른 이야기를 해줬다. 시리즈 전체에 걸쳐 43.8 퍼센트에 그친 야투율을 기록했고, ESPN Stats & Info 탐색에 따르면 마지막 두 경기에서는 페인트 안의 15 개 샷들 중 13 개를 실패했다. 저 마지막 대목은 (페인트 안에서의 실패들) 저렇게 하기도 힘들어 보이지 않는가.

이번 시리즈 동안 웨이드는 42 세로 보였지, 32 세로 보이지 않았다. 그의 특허인 번개처럼 재빠른 퍼스트 스텝은 먼 옛날의 추억이 됐다. 본인을 효율적인 피니셔로 만드는 데 일조했던 림 근처의 아크로바틱 플레이들은 접촉을 피하기 위해 디자인된 플로터들로 대체됐다. 트위터에서 돌고 돌았던 이  11 분짜리 YouTube 클립에서 보여졌듯이, 웨이드의 수비쪽 움직임은 뛰어남과는 거리가 있었다. 웨이드는 마치 허리까지 찬 물 속에 들어가 있는 듯한 모습이었다.

우리의 눈에 보이지 않는 곳에서, 웨이드는 파이널을 준비하기 위해 혹독한 훈련 요법을 거쳤었다. 그 과정에 가까이 있던 한 소스가 ESPN.com에 말하길 웨이드의 건강이 상당한 이슈가 되어 지난 몇 달에 걸쳐 경기 날이 되면 무릎에 한 시간짜리 고압산소실 치료를 거쳤다고 한다. 여기에 더해 Tim Grover, 즉 마이클 조던과 코비 브라이언트와도 일해 왔던 개인 트레이너와 함께 유연성 및 강화 훈련을 늘렸다. 그런데 저렇게 했음에도 결국 마지막에 웨이드는 런닝, 아 실수, 조깅하고 있었다.

살짝 시야를 확장해서 보면, 이번 웨이드의 파이널 퍼포먼스는 본인의 커리어 중 단연코 최악이었으며 압도적이었던 2006 파이널 MVP 시절과는 엄청난 거리가 있었다. 스퍼스를 상대한 이번 해에서 웨이드는 다섯 경기를 통해 10.3 플레이어 이피션시 레이팅을 기록했다. 이는 리그 평균 (15) 한참 아래이며 3 년 전 댈러스를 상대했을 당시 기록했던 수치의 (30.2) 1/3 가량에 해당한다. 그리고 파이널 두 번 연속으로, 제임스와 웨이드는 함께 코트 위에 있을 때 호환이 되지 못했고 제임스는 웨이드가 벤치에 들어갔을 때에야 지배적으로 보였다.

웨이드가 돈을 더 받겠다고 다른 곳으로 향할 가능성은 적고, 따라서 히트 입장에서는 웨이드로 하여금 앞으로 더 작은 역할을 감수하도록 설득시키기가 필수 사항이 됐다. 웨이드는 정규 시즌에서 28 경기들을 결장하고도 막판에 몸이 말을 듣지 않았다. 지금 히트는 웨이드가 정규 시즌 스타가 되라고 돈을 주고 있는 것이 아니다. 롱 런을 위해 웨이드를 아끼고자 한다면, 히트는 스퍼스의 플레이북 중 한 페이지를 뜯어 와서 웨이드가 마누 지노빌리 식으로 벤치에서 나오도록 해야 한다. 이건 예전에도 내가 지지했던 내용이다.

웨이드가 마이애미의 추가 우승에 일부분이 되는 면도 있지만, 후보 역할로 배치시킴으로써 히트가 그의 시간을 더 쉽게 관리하는 한편 세컨드 유닛들을 상대로 신낼 수 있게 할 수도 있다. 지노빌리는 34 세에 접어든 후로 경기 당 25 분을 넘겨본 적이 없으며 웨이드는 내년 1 월이면 33 번째 생일을 맞이하게 된다. 시간이 가까워졌다. 웨이드가 이번 시즌에 커리어 로우인 32.9 분을 플레이했지만, 경기 당 10 분씩만 깎아도 정규 시즌에 600 분 더 적게 마모된다는 것을 의미하고 이로써 포스트시즌을 위해 그를 아껴둘 수 있다.

물론, 웨이드가 이런 움직임에 동의를 해야 가능하겠지만, 마이애미에서 본인이 우승을 위해 계속하여 경합하고 싶다면, 앞으로 이것이 본인에게나 팀에게나 최선의 선택이 아닐까 싶다. 이렇게 생각해 보자: 5 차전에서 지노빌리가 바쉬 상대로 그랬던 것처럼 웨이드가 팀 던컨을 앞에 두고 덩크하는 모습을 당신이 볼 수 있을까? 그럼 이제 지노빌리가 지금의 웨이드보다 네 살 더 많다는 것을 생각해 보라.

2. Invest overseas

파이널에서 스퍼스가 히트보다 더 팔팔해 보였던 이유로 들 큰 그림 한 가지? 그렉 포포비치와 제네럴 매니져 RC 뷰포드가 뽑아 내고 있는 재능의 풀이 더 깊다: 전세계. 이 팀의 로스터에 등재된 미국 밖에서 태어난 선수들이 아홉이다. 아홉. 지노빌리, 토니 파커, 팀 던컨, 티아고 스플리터, 패티 밀스, 보리스 디아우, 마르코 벨리넬리, 코리 조셉, 애런 베인스 모두 밖에서 들여온 인물들이다. 반면 히트는 아무도 없다.

히트 단장 팻 라일리는 1996 년 드래프트 당일밤에 에스토니아 출신 빅맨 마틴 뮤르셉(Martin Muursepp)을 받는 트레이드를 했는데 결국 자신의 경력에서 가장 큰 실패작들 중 하나로 판명된 후 외국 선수들을 상당히 기피해 왔다. 라일리는 South Florida Sun Sentinel에 이렇게 말한 적이 있다: "난 정말 토종 제품을 좋아한다오." 뮤르셉 이후로 퍼스트 라운드에서 라일리가 외국인 선수를 뽑은 적이 없으며, 그리고 노리스 콜을 제외하면 히트의 조연들 전원이 나이 많은, 미국 태생 선수들로 채워져 있다.

이렇게 외국 인력의 도움 없이 성공하는 경우도 드물다. 실제로 케빈 펠튼의 조사에 따르면, 대학 농구를 플레이하지 않았던 외국 선수들로부터 이번 시즌 제로의 시간을 본 네 팀들 중 하나가 히트다. 나머지 세 팀들? 새크라멘토, 올랜도 그리고 필라델피아. 지하층 거주자들. 실제로 2005-06 이후로 히트 소속으로 플레이해 봤던 유일한 외국인이 지드루나스 일가우스커스이며 이것도 3 년 전 일이다. 이게 다다.

스퍼스와 대조해 보자. 스퍼스는 같은 기간에 걸쳐 외국 선수들에게 56,610 분을 할당해 왔다. 저 기간 동안 히트가 봤던 시간에 거의 50 배다 (히트의 1,145 분 모두 Big Z로부터 나온 것). 위의 챠트를 보면 당신은 히트의 분량이 NBA 29 위에 랭크됐음을 보게 될 것이고, 오직 필라델피아만 아래에 있다. 아주 그냥 농구판 외국인 혐오증이라 해도 될 듯 하다.

믿거나 말거나지만, 외국인 영입 그리고 순위 사이에 연관성이 있다. 통계학 용어로, 저 시간에 걸쳐 외국인 시간과 승률 사이에 적정치의 상관 관계가 (r = .337) 있다. 가령, 외국인 시간이 많기로 탑 8 중 일곱 팀이 2005-06 이후로 .500 승률을 넘겼던 반면, 바텀 14 중에서는 오직 네 팀만이 같은 이야기를 할 수 있다 (시카고, 인디애나, 보스턴, 마이애미). 마이애미는 외국인의 조력 없이도 세 번의 우승을 차지해 봤다. 하지만 실수를 해도 될 여지가 앞으로 계속하여 희박해져 가는 상황에서, 가게의 모든 통로들을 살펴 가며 쇼핑하는 것이 현명할 것이다.

일단 확실한 것은 있다: 히트의 프론트 오피스가 입구에다가 "외국인 선수 출입 금지"라고 적힌 푯말을 걸어놓지는 않았다. 모든 NBA 팀들과 마찬가지로, 이들도 해외 스카우팅 부서를 고용하고 있으며 그리고 공식적으로도 사적으로도 이 팀은 외국인 영입의 결핍에 드래프트에서의 불운 그 이상의 의미는 없고 다른 팀들이 자기들이 찜해뒀던 선수들을 낚아 챘다고 주장한다.

하지만 아홉 시즌들 동안 한 명의 외국인 선수라는 점이 불운 만으로는 설명될 수 없다. 외국인 선수들에게 투자한다는 것은 팀 입장에서 어느 정도의 위험을 감수함과 동시에 인프라를 요구하기 때문에, 적어도 히트처럼 지금 이겨야 하는 팀이 머나먼 땅에서 자란 선수들에 따르는 불확실성을 피하려 하는 이유만큼은 이해할 만하다.

하지만 위험이란 또한 때에 따라 로스터를 살찌우는 기회를 가져다 주기도 한다. 할인 가판대에서 싸고도 좋은 물건을 골라내기란 쉬운 일이 아닌데 물론 히트가 고철 더미에서 건져내어 어느 정도의 성공을 거둔 적이 있긴 하다 (크리스 앤더슨). 하지만 실망으로 끝난 자들의 리스트가 훨씬 길다 (에릭 댐피어, 자말 매글로어, 마이크 비비, 로저 메이슨, 주완 하워드, 등등). 고령에다 토종의 베테랑에 친화적인 히트의 성향은 파이널 내내 자신들을 괴롭혔고 결국 스퍼스보다 먼저 연료 탱크가 바닥나 버렸다.

물론, 히트가 로스터에 외국인 선수 꼭 하나 넣자고 외국인 선수와 사인할 필요는 없다. 하지만 오래된 우물을 또 파내어 마르지 않을 것이라 기대하는 것도 이상할 따름이다. 히트는 더 젊어질 필요가 있고 그 파이프라인이 미국의 국경을 넘어 뻗어 나갈 필요가 있다.

3. Don't waste cap space on Carmelo Anthony

보도에 따르면 히트가 앤써니에 타깃을 정해  Big Four를 만들려 한다고 하지만,  한 선수로는 히트의 이슈를 해결하지 못할 것이다. 설령 한 선수로 할 수 있다 하더라도, 앤써니처럼 플레이해서는 안 된다는 것은 거의 확실하다.

히트는 제임스에 도움이 될 다수의 몸뚱이들이 필요하다. 스포엘스트라가 당신이 상상할 만한 거의 모든 라인업 배치를 시도해 봤지만, 제임스가 스퍼스 상대로 툭하면 일 대 오 상황에 있었다는 사실은 변한 것이 없었다. 직접 확인해 보라. 아래의 챠트는 파이널 동안의 총 샌산성을 보여주며 존 홀린져의 estimated wins added (EWA) 메트릭스로 측정됐다. 이 메트릭스는 PER에 뿌리를 둔 것으로 플레이한 시간도 포함시킨 것이다.

위에 그려진 대로, 제임스는 자기 혼자서 거의 2 승을 기여했지만, 나머지 팀원들이 그를 끌어 내렸다. 당신이 어떤 메트릭스를 택하든 상관없이, 보게 될 스토리는 같다: 히트의 파이널 산출량은 대개가 제임스의 것이고, 그나마 일부가 바쉬의 것이며 그외 나머지는 별로 없다.

이번 오프시즌에 캡 유동성을 갖기 위해 히트가 제임스와 바쉬 그리고 웨이드로 하여금 돈을 덜 받도록 설득하려 한다면, 나머지 금액을 모두 앤써니에게 쏟아붓는 일만큼은 없어야 한다. 히트가 해야 할 일의 최후 순위에 둬야 하는 것이 상위에 편중된 상태를 더욱 심화시키기다. 또한 분명하게 하지 말아야 할 것으로는 수비쪽 가치가 극소에서 전무에 달하는 선수를 갖고 저런 상태를 만들어선 안된다.

앤써니의 존재는 장기간 동안 제임스를 신선하게 유지하도록 도움이 될 수는 있겠지만, 이것은 히트의 가장 큰 우선 사항이 아니다. 히트는 빅 쓰리 시절 동안 처음으로 수비 효율성에서 탑 10 밖으로 밀려 났었다. 이쪽 플로어 진영의 문제를 고치기 전에는 우승을 거두지 못할 것이다. 잔고액을 앤써니에게 준다는 것은 모래 한 웅큼으로 갈증을 풀려 하는 것과도 같을 것이다.

앤써니에게 캡 여유의 모두를 긁어내어 주는 대신, 히트는 더 젊어질 필요가 있고 저 돈을 갖고 쓸모 있는 몸뚱이들로 로스터 나머지를 채울 필요가 있다. 그리고 여기에도 돈이 필요하다. 션 리빙스턴과 마친 고탓 같은 비제한 프리 에이젼트들이 그저 히트 소속으로 플레이하겠다고 십수 밀리언 달러를 깎아 내어 베테랑 미니멈 딜을 받아들일 일은 없을 것이다. 히트는 돈을 지혜롭게 쓸 필요가 있고 이 말은 앤써니의 돈을 쪼개어 스퍼스가 스플리터와 디아우에게 했던 대로 로테이션 플레이어들에게 나눠 써야 할 것이라는 얘기다.

파이널에서 졌다는 것이 히트가 빅 쓰리를 해체하여 자신들을 저곳으로 이끈 모델을 완전히 폐기해야 함을 뜻하진 않는다. 스퍼스는 작년에 패닉에 빠지지 않았었고 히트도 그래서는 안된다. 히트는 상황에 따라 자신들의 모습을 바꿀 필요가 있다. 마치 스퍼스처럼.

In the wake of the 2014 NBA Finals, the Miami Heat's parting line was a telling one. FromLeBron James to Erik Spoelstra, from Chris Bosh to Shane Battier, the mantra was all the same: "We lost to a better team."

That much was obvious after the San Antonio Spurs delivered the most dominant Finals performance in NBA history after adjusting for the opponent. The two-time defending champs looked completely outmatched during the final stretch of their three-peat quest. The Spurs trailed for only 47 of the 240 total minutes in the series.

But we shouldn't be totally surprised at the Finals outcome. If you look at NBA history, you'll find the thrashing the Heat absorbed wasn't far from the norm when it comes to three-peat quests. Logging all of those miles can take a toll. Sure, the early 2000s Los Angeles Lakerspulled it off and Jordan's Chicago Bulls did it twice. But the 2011 Lakers, 1996 Houston Rockets, 1991 Detroit Pistons and 1989 Lakers all got swept in their three-peat quests.

Of that group, only the 1989 Lakers even made it as far as the Finals.

The question is what comes next. The first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one in the first place. The Heat seem to acknowledge some issues, pointing out that the Spurs were simply the better team. How do they solve those issues and become the better team next season? They can start by copying the Spurs' blueprint.

Here are three lessons from the Spurs' model.

1. Bring Dwyane Wade off the bench

In his Game 5 postgame news conference, Dwyane Wade insisted "nothing physically at all" was bothering him in the Finals. His play said otherwise. He shot just 43.8 percent over the entire series and missed 13 of his 15 shots in the paint over the last two games, according to ESPN Stats & Info tracking. That last bit -- the misses in the paint -- seems almost impossible to pull off.

In this series, Wade looked 42, not 32. His patented lightning-quick first step was a distant memory. Acrobatic plays at the rim, the kind that make him an efficient finisher, were replaced with floaters designed to avoid contact. Wade's defensive work, as documented in this 11-minute YouTube clip that has made the rounds on Twitter, was less than stellar. Wade looked like he was waist deep in water.

Behind the scenes, Wade went through a grueling regimen to prepare for the Finals. A source close to the situation tells ESPN.com that Wade's health became such an issue that he underwent hour-long hyperbaric chamber treatments on his knees on game days over the past few months. That was in addition to extended stretching and strengthening work with his personal trainer, Tim Grover, who has also worked with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. And still, Wade was running -- err, jogging -- on fumes at the end.

Zooming out a bit, this was easily Wade's worst Finals performance of his career and a far cry from his dominant 2006 Finals MVP campaign. This year against the Spurs, Wade posted a 10.3 player efficiency rating in the five games, which is far below the league average (15) and about a third of what he registered against Dallas three years ago (30.2). And for the second Finals in a row, James and Wade weren't compatible on the court together and James only seemed to be dominant when Wade hit the bench.

Get this: James scored 70 points in the 59 minutes when he did not share the court with Wade in this series. That's an astounding scoring rate of 42.7 points every 36 minutes -- more than double his rate with Wade on the court (19.7 points). 

The Heat are in a tough spot with Wade. After 11 years in the organization, he is an icon in South Florida, but an aging one. Shooting guards who rely on quickness typically do not age well and the decline only sharpens if they lack a 3-point shot. Wade has evolved to incorporate more basket cuts into his game, but that only works if his tires aren't flat. Nonetheless, he holds two player options that can net him about $42 million over the next two years, which is more than he could command on an annual basis in the open market.

It's unlikely that Wade goes elsewhere for more money, so it becomes imperative for the Heat to convince Wade to take on a lesser role going forward. He missed 28 games in the regular season and his body still failed him down the stretch. The Heat aren't paying Wade to be a regular-season star. To save him for the long run, the Heat should take a page out of the Spurs' playbook and bring Wade off the bench a la Manu Ginobili. It's something I've advocated before.

Wade can be a part of another title in Miami, but aligning him in a reserve role allows the Heat to manage his minutes more easily while also letting him flourish against second units. Ginobili never averaged more than 25 minutes per game after turning 34 and Wade celebrates his 33rd birthday next January. The time is near. Wade played a career-low 32.9 minutes this season, but shaving off just 10 minutes per game could mean 600 fewer minutes of the regular-season grind that he can save for the postseason.

Of course, Wade would have to be on board with the move, but if he wants to continue competing for championships in Miami, this is probably his best bet for both the team and for himself going forward. Put it this way: Could you see Wade dunking on Tim Duncan like Ginobili did against Bosh in Game 5? Now consider that Ginobili is four years older than Wade is now.

2. Invest overseas

One big-picture reason the Spurs looked fresher than the Heat in the Finals? Gregg Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford are picking from a deeper talent pool: the globe. The team's roster features nine players born outside the United States. Nine. Ginobili, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter, Patty Mills, Tiago Splitter. Boris Diaw, Marco Belinelli, Cory Joseph and Aron Baynes are all imports of some kind. Meanwhile, the Heat have none.

Heat president Pat Riley has largely avoided foreign players since he traded for Estonian big man Martin Muursepp on draft night in 1996 (No. 26 pick) and it turned out to be one of the biggest busts on his résumé. In 2010, Riley told the South Florida Sun Sentinel: "I just like the homegrown product." He hasn't picked a foreign player in the first round since Muursepp, and, outside of Norris Cole, the Heat's entire supporting cast features older, American-born players.

It's rare to be this successful without help from overseas. In fact, according to Kevin Pelton's research, the Heat are one of four teams this season to have zero minutes coming from international players who didn't play college basketball. The other three teams? Sacramento, Orlando and Philadelphia. Basement-dwellers. In fact, the only foreigner who has played for the Heat since 2005-06 is Zydrunas Ilgauskas and that was three years ago. That's it.

Contrast that with the Spurs, who have allocated 56,610 minutes to international players over that same time span. That's about 50 times more than the Heat have seen over the period (1,145 minutes, all from Big Z). Look at the chart above and you'll find the Heat's portion ranks 29th in the NBA, above only Philadelphia. This is as close to basketball xenophobia as it gets.

Believe it or not, there is a connection between foreign imports and the standings. In statistical terms, there is a moderate correlation (r = .337) between international minutes and winning percentage over that time. For instance, seven of the top eight in international minutes have been over .500 since 2005-06, but only four of the bottom 14 teams can say the same (Chicago, Indiana, Boston and Miami). Miami has won three championships without international help. But as the margin for error continues to thin going forward, it might be wise to shop at all the aisles in the store.

Let's be clear: the Heat's front office does not have a sign hanging on the front door that reads "No international players allowed." Like all NBA teams, they employ an international scouting department and the team both publicly and privately argue that the lack of foreign imports is nothing more than a case of bad timing in the draft and that other teams havesnatched up their targeted players.

But one international player in nine seasons can't be explained by bad luck alone. Investing in international players requires a team to tolerate a certain amount of risk and infrastructure, so it's at least understandable why a win-now team like the Heat might try to avoid the uncertainty that comes along with players groomed from faraway lands.

But risk also brings opportunity to replenish the roster on the fly. Scouring the bargain bin isn't an easy task and the Heat have had some success by pulling from the scrap heap (Chris Andersen). But the list of flameouts is much longer (Erick Dampier, Jamaal Magloire, Mike Bibby, Roger Mason, Juwan Howard, etc). The Heat's affinity for the grizzled, homegrown veteran haunted them in the Finals as the gas tank hit empty long before the Spurs' did.

No, the Heat shouldn't sign an international player just to have one on the roster. But it seems odd to dip into the same old well time and again and expect it to never dry out. The Heat need to get younger and the pipeline reaches beyond the American border.

3. Don't waste cap space on Carmelo Anthony

The Heat are reportedly targeting Anthony to create a Big Four, but one player won't solve the Heat's issues. Even if one player could, he almost certainly wouldn't play like Anthony.

The Heat need multiple bodies to help James. Spoelstra tried just about every lineup configuration you can imagine, but nothing changed the fact James was often going one-on-five against the Spurs. See for yourself. The chart below shows the total production in the Finals as measured by John Hollinger's estimated wins added (EWA) metric, a value derivation of PER that incorporates minutes played.

As illustrated above, James contributed about two wins on his own, but the rest of the team dragged him down. No matter what metric you choose, you'd see the same story: the Heat's Finals output was a whole lot of James, some Bosh and not much else.

If the Heat are going to convince James, Bosh and Wade to take less money this offseason in order to have cap flexibility, the end game should not be throwing all the residual money to Anthony. The last thing the Heat need to do is get more top-heavy. And they certainly don't need to do it with a player who provides little to no defensive value.

Anthony's presence may help keep James fresh for the long haul, but that's not the Heat's biggest priority. The Heat ranked outside the top 10 in defensive efficiency for the first time in the Big Three era. They won't win championships until they fix that end of the floor. Using the leftover money to bring in Anthony would be the equivalent of quenching thirst with a fistful of sand.

Instead of allocating any and all cap space to Anthony, the Heat need to get younger and use that money to fill out the rest of the roster with able bodies. And that requires money. Unrestricted free agents like Shaun Livingston and Marcin Gortat aren't lining up to turn down tens of millions of dollars and take a veteran minimum deal just to play for the Heat. The Heat need to spend their money wisely and that may mean splitting up Anthony's money for rotation players like the Spurs did with Splitter and Diaw.

A Finals exit doesn't mean the Heat need to blow up the Big Three and completely scrap the model that got them there. The Spurs didn't panic last year and the Heat shouldn't, either. They need to reinvent themselves on the fly. Just like the Spurs.

웨이드 벤치롤은 많이 나온 이야기이긴한데. 벤치로 가면 주전 2번롤을 맡을 선수가 지금 로스터에는 없을 것이고 알렌이 남는다면 알렌 활용방안 찾는 것도 쉽지 않아 보이네요. (설마 알렌이 주전??) 캡 상황이 어떤지 잘 모르지만 빅쓰리가 페이컷을 할 것 같지 않은데... 그럼 적은 돈으로 FA 혹은 작은 자산으로 트레이드를 통해 주전 2번을 데려와야 한다는것이겠죠. 아니면 일라운드 후반픽으로 주전 슈팅가드 즉시 전력감을 뽑던가요. 모두 쉽지 않아 보입니다. 이런 상황에서 히트 포인트 가드 진영의 탤런트까지 감안하면 웨이드 벤치 시 주전 백코트 구성은 험난해 보이네요.
