The Not-So-Good Rookie Class

Hailed as one the best rookie classes ever, the 2014 class has thus far been a disappointment.

이번 클래스는 이목을 집중시켰고, 응당 그럴 만도 했다. 하지만 이 NBA라는 곳이 순 시장 지배력만을 갖고 세계 최고의 리그가 된 곳이 아니다. 해마다 우리는 대학 농구를 지배했지만 본인들의 NBA 첫 경험에선 고전하는 선수들을 보곤 한다.

이번 시즌, 15 이상의 PER을 현재 기록하고 있는 루키가 단 한 명도 없는데, 이 말인 즉슨 이번 클래스에서 지금 현재 평균의 선수도 흉내내고 있는 이가 없다는 뜻이다. 물론 이번 시즌 안이 됐든 미래가 됐든 저기에 도달할 친구들은 상당수 있다.

하지만 지금과 같은 상황은 여기가 훨씬 더 큰 재능과 힘과 사이즈와 지능과 끈기를 지닌 남자들로 이뤄진 리그라는 것을 새삼 느끼게 해주는 계기이기도 하다. 여기에다 NBA 코치들의 지략과 날마다 힘든 일이 반복되는 스케줄까지 겹치면서, 일년차 선수에게 있어 이 리그는 엄청 난이도 높은 도전 과제다.

그래도 지금까지 슬몃 번뜩이는  모습을 보여준 탑 20 루키들을 여기 올려 본다:

1. Dante Exum, Jazz

우린 섬머 리그에서 엑섬의 "it" 인자를 봤었고 이번 시즌에서는 간단한 패스들과 (필요한 때면) 팀동료들에게 이지 샷을 연결시켜주는 어려운 패스들 둘 모두를 만들 수 있는 모습을 보여주며 멋진 시간을 보냈다. 엑섬은 강력한 돌파를 거친 다음 3점슛이나 덩크로 이어지는 어시스트를 건넨다. 랍 패스들도 띄워 준다. 속공들을 이끌어 와이드 오픈 득점 기회들을 만들기도 한다. 그리고 가장 인상적인 것은, 액션 중에 자기로부터 멀리 떨어져 있는 오픈 슛터들을 찾아낸다는 점이다.

게다가 이와 같은 모습을 정신적인 실수 거의 없이 보여주고 있으며, 또한 경기를 운영하는 모습도 보여주고 있다. 엑섬은 전체 일순위로 드래프트될 만한 자처럼 플레이하고 있다.

2. Bojan Bogdanovic, Nets

경력의 첫 몇 년을 유로리그에서 시작하여 월드컵에서 고국의 베스트 플레이어가 되기도 했던 이 25 세 선수가 거의 모든 루키 경쟁자들보다 NBA에 플레이할 준비가 훨씬 더 돼 있는 것은 놀랄 일이 아니다.

비록 아직 잘 슛하고 있진 않지만, 영리한 샷들을 던지고 있고 너무 많은 것을 하려하지 않으며 넷츠에서 자신의 역할을 잘 채우고 있다.

3. Jabari Parker, Bucks

파커가 리그에 불을 지르진 못하고 있지만 (다른 모든 루키들도 마찬가지), 공수 양 진영에서 모든 경기마다 임팩트를 만들고 있고 벅스가 그를 드래프트했던 당시 희망했던 그 프랜차이즈 플레이어다운 모습을 보이고 있다.

공격에서 재능이 있고 아직 본인의 잠재력을 깨닫는 데에 근처에도 오지 못했다. 그리고 비록 뛰어난 수비수는 아니지만 매우 좋은 수비 팀의 일원이 될 의지가 있어 언젠가는 결국 견실한 수비수가 될 가능성이 있다.

4. K.J. McDaniels, 76ers

식서스는 이래도 되나 싶을 정도로 후지지만, 이들에게 재능이 전혀 없는 것은 아니라는 증거가 맥대니얼스다. 아크 너머에서 잘 슛하고 있고 멋진 샷 페이크 돌파 동작을 활용해 페인트 안으로 돌파하고 있다.

맥대니얼스는 또한 드리블로 자기 상대를 제쳐 잔꾀 또는 폭발력을 통해 마무리할 수 있음을 보여줬다. 실제로 그의 슈팅 능력까지 고려하면 돌파하려는 그의 성향은 미래에 있어 아주 좋은 조짐이다.

5. Elfrid Payton, Magic

그의 수치들은 인상적인 것과는 거리가 있지만 (매끈한 어시스트 레이트는 제외하고), 어린 선수들로 구성된 팀에서 스타팅 포인트 가드로서 경기 당 30 분을 플레이하고 있다는 것을 감안할 필요가 있다. 또한 본인의 시간 중 대부분을 퍼스트 팀 급 선수들을 상대로 보내기도 했으며, 지금 이와 같은 사항을 이야기할 수 있는 루키는 거의 없다.

페이튼은 계속하여 라존 론도의 닮은꼴 모습을 보여주고 있는데, 론도 만큼 화려하진 않지만 득점을 제외한 전 부문에 걸쳐 경기에 임팩트를 주고 있다.

6. Aaron Gordon, Magic

고든도 언젠가 능숙한 슛터가 될 잠재력을 갖고 있는 엘리트 운동선수로서 드래프트됐었다. 그런데 그 날이 이미 도착해 있을 수도 있다. 대학 때보다 그의 샷이 훨씬 깔끔한 모양새를 갖고 있기 때문이다. 또한 스몰 포워드에서 예상보다 많은 시간을 플레이하며 제법 쉽게 적응을 하고 있다.

매직은 고든을 드래프트했던 당시 부담했던 위험이 컸지만, 옳은 선택이었다는 징후들을 벌써부터 보여주고 있다.

7. Nerlens Noel, 76ers

위에 나열된 이름들 중 몇몇은 초반에 나온 서프라이즈들이었지만, 노엘은 아니다. 그는 정확히 우리가 기대했던 그대로다: 블락과 스틸로 경기에 임팩트를 미칠 수 있는 격정적 움직임을 지닌 수비수. 한 경기에 3 블락을 기록한 적이 벌써 두 번이나 되고 6 스틸을 기록한 경기도 있었다.

지금 당장으로썬 여전히 초라한 공격수이지만, 인상적인 패스들을 몇 번 만들기도 했고 그의 게임은 시간이 흐르면서 계속하여 진화할 것이다.

8. Andrew Wiggins, Timberwolves

위긴스보다도 어려운 과제를 당면한 루키는 없다. 전체 탑 픽이라는 압박 뿐만 아니라 (오히려 이건 이미 가장 작은 과제가 됐음), 또한 그는 매 경기마다 탑 윙들을 수비하길 주문받고 있는 한편으로 그들을 상대로 윙과 포스트 구역에서 득점하도록 힘써야 한다.

그의 전반적인 모터 구동력은 인상적이지 못했지만, 그간의 과정 전체가 다사다난했음을 알아주는 것이 공평할 것이다. 그리고 자신의 게임을 쉽게 만들어주는 리키 루비오가 빠지게 됐다는 점도 전체적인 임팩트를 깎아 먹었다.

하지만 우린 그가 얼마나 특별해질 수 있는지에 대한 징후들을 경기마다 보고 있다. 그것이 하든의 레이업 시도를 충격적인 위력으로 블락했던 일이 됐든 아니면 각이 좀체 안 나올 듯한 상황에서 베이스라인 돌파를 마무리하는 것이 됐든.

9. Doug McDermott, Bulls

대부분의 루키들은 공격이 됐든 수비가 됐든 코트 위 볼 없는 상황에서 플레이하는 것에 관해 배워야 할 것이 산더미다. 그러나 맥더밋은 이미 익힌 상태에 있는 드문 사례의 루키다.

스크린들 사이를 빠져 나가는 거의 일정한 모션을 통해 좋은 타이밍의 림 컷을 만들어낸다. 지능적인 플레이 덕분에 우승 후보 팀에서 로테이션 급 시간을 받고 있다.

10. Nikola Mirotic, Bulls

스몰 포워드로 쉽게 자리를 옮길 수 있는 한편으로 외곽 위협원이 될 수 있는 빅맨의 유니크함은 미로티치가 시즌이 흘러가면서 점점 더 많은 플레잉 타임을 얻게 될 것임을 암시해 준다. NBA에 있는 보다 재빠르고 보다 길쭉한 상대방들, 그리고 전반적인 스케줄에 있어 여전히 적응을 해야 하지만, 불스가 기대할 수 있는 선수처럼 보인다.

11. Jusuf Nurkic, Nuggets

NBA는 많은 어린 루키들을 불리함에 빠지게 만들 남자들로 가득찬 리그다. 그러나 누르키치는 아니다. 겨우 20 세이지만, 크고 힘이 세 이미 인사이드에서 동급의 크기를 가진 남자들을 밀어낼 수 있다. 이 나이에 그런 힘을 가졌다는 것은 좋은 미래를 보여주는 징조다.

12. Kostas Papanikolaou, Rockets

리그 상위 팀들 중 하나의 소속으로 많은 시간을 받고 있는 이 24 세 프로에게 많은 것이 기대됐었다. 그러나 멕시코시티에서 열려진 팀버울브즈 상대 경기 전까진, 볼을 제법 잘 돌린다는 것 외엔 별 보여준 것 없이 실망스런 모습이었다.

하지만 우리가 수요일 그의 출중한 경기를 봤다시피 분명 그는 재능을 갖고 있고 어떻게 플레이해야 하는지 알고 있다. 따라서 빠른 향상이 나오더라도 놀랄 일은 아닐 것이다.

13. Rodney Hood, Jazz

후드는 족저근막염을 겪고 있어 유타의 지난 세 경기를 빠졌다. 하지만 부상 전까지 어린 선수들이 너무 많은 것을 하려다가 저지르는 일반적인 실수를 피하는 좋은 모습을 보여주고 있었다. 대체적으로 플레이들을 마무리하는 것에 집중을 기하려 노력했다. 다만 그 마무리에 부진을 겪어서 그랬지.

14. Shabazz Napier, Heat

대학 팀에서 "더 맨"으로 존재한다는 것 그리고 NBA에 팀에서, 설령 섬머 리그라 해도, 그냥 한 명 더 있는 선수로 있는 것 사이의 차이는 어마어마하다. 지금 네이피어는 이를 몸소 체험하여 알고 있다. 매일 NBA 선수처럼 보이기엔 여전히 갈 길이 많이 남아 있다.

15. Zach LaVine, Timberwolves

리키 루비오가 부상으로 빠지게 되면서 라빈은 제법되는 플레잉 타임을 얻게 됐고 그 시기 동안 포인트를 보며 보다 절제된 모습을 보였다. 울브즈는 쉬운 플레이들에 관여하는 것 말고는 거의 하지 않도록 주문하고 있고, 지난 두 경기 동안 라빈은 그렇게 해왔다.

하지만 의문은 이것이다: 그가 효율성과 생산성을 동시에 만족시키는 플레이를 할 수 있을까?

16. P.J. Hairston, Hornets

헤어스턴은 벤치에서 나오는 모든 루키들 중 유시지 레이트에서 선두를 달리며, 샷을 시도하려거나 림으로 돌진하려는 의지를 보여줬다. 아직 잘 슛하고 있진 못하지만 릴리즈는 좋아 보이고 엘보우에서 패스를 받아 돌파하는 멋진 플레이들을 몇 번 만들기도 했다.

그의 샷이 정돈이 된다면 또는 되는 때, 이 리그의 스타팅 슈팅 가드 같은 모습을 갖게 될 것이다.

17. Jordan Clarkson, Lakers

레이커스가 지금 처한 혼돈의 시기와 싸우고 있는 한편으로 클락슨은 일정한 로테이션 시간을 더 얻기 위해 싸우고 있다. 비록 공격에선 보여준 것이 그닥 없지만, 클락슨은 돌파자들을 수비할 때 발을 잘 움직이고 있고 상대가 슛하려 할 때면 팔을 위로 쭉 올려주는 좋은 모습을 보여주고 있다. 상대방들이 그를 상대로는 득점하기에 좀 더 성가시게 만드는 동시에 파울도 하지 않고 있다.

18. James Ennis, Heat

에니스도 더 일정한 시간을 얻기 위해 노력 중인 선수다. 본인에게 있어 공부하기에 최적의 선수인 루올 뎅 뒤에서 플레이하며 배우고 있어 열심히 싸우는 한편 전반적으로 좋은 샷들을 시도하고 있다.

19. Nik Stauskas, Kings

슈팅 재능을 제외하고 스타우스커스에 대해 딱 떠오르는 사항 하나가 그의 전반적인 자신감이다. 이 곳은 내가 있어야 할 곳이다라는 믿음을 진정으로 갖고 있고, 이는 이 리그에서 장수하고 싶다면 중요한 사항이다. 하지만, 지금 그는 자신이 많은 샷들을 넣고 있는 사람인 양 던지고 있는데, 실상은 그렇지가 않다. 빛이 날 수 있는 기회를 충분히 얻고 있지만, 그 혜택을 아직 제대로 실현시키지 못하고 있다.

20. Marcus Smart, Celtics

발목 부상으로 쓰러지기 전까지, 스마트는 론도의 견실한 보완재처럼 보였으며 그리고 어쩌면 종국에 가서 견실한 후임자가 될 것처럼 보였다. 론도와 같은 패서도 아니며 그렇게 될 일도 없겠지만, 수비에서의 플레이메이커 그리고 더 뛰어난 소질을 지닌 득점원의 모습을 보인다.

This class is heralded, and rightfully so, but the NBA is not the best league in the world because of sheer marketing power. Year after year we see guys who dominated college basketball struggle in their first taste of the NBA.

This season, not a single rookie currently has PER of 15 or better, meaning no one in this class is resembling even an average player right now. Of course, there are plenty of guys who will get there, whether it's this season or in the future.

But it's a reminder that this is a league of men with so much talent, power, size, intelligence and patience. Factor in the brain power of NBA coaches and the daily grind of the schedule, and it's an enormously challenging task to be a first-year player in this league.

Here are the top 20 rookies of the young season who have shown flashes so far:

1. Dante Exum, Jazz

We saw Exum's "it" factor in summer league and he has been terrific this season, showing the ability to make both simple passes and tough ones (when required) to teammates for easy shots. He makes hard drives and dishes for 3s or dunks. He delivers lobs. He leads fast breaks, which result in wide-open scoring chances. And, most impressively, he finds open shooters far away from the action.

He's doing this with very few mental errors, too, while also managing the game. Exum is playing like someone who deserved to be drafted first overall.

2. Bojan Bogdanovic, Nets

It's no surprise that the 25-year-old, who started for years in the Euroleague and was his nation's best player in the World Cup, is far more ready to play in the NBA than just about all of his rookie counterparts.

Although he's not shooting well yet, he's shooting smart shots and filling his role on the Nets well by not trying to do too much.

3. Jabari Parker, Bucks

Parker is not setting the league on fire (nor is any other rookie), but he is impacting every game on both ends and looks like the franchise player the Bucks hoped for when they drafted him.

He's talented on offense and not even close to realizing his potential. And, while he's not a great defensive player, he's a willing one on a very good defensive team, suggesting that it's possible he'll end up being a solid defender one day.

4. K.J. McDaniels, 76ers

The Sixers are impossibly bad, but McDaniels is proof they are not devoid of talent. He's shooting well from beyond the arc and using a nice shot-fake attack move to drive into the lane.

McDaniels also has shown he can drive by his man off the dribble and finish with craft or explosiveness. In fact, his willingness to attack bodes very well for his future, considering his shooting ability.

5. Elfrid Payton, Magic

His numbers are far from impressive (except for his gaudy assist rate), but it's important to understand he is playing 30 minutes a game as the starting point guard on a team of young guys. He is also getting almost all of his minutes against first-teamers as well, something few rooks can say as of now.

Payton continues to resemble a version of Rajon Rondo, not as flashy but impacting the game in every category except scoring.

6. Aaron Gordon, Magic

Gordon was drafted as an elite athlete with the potential to one day be a competent shooter, too. It's possible that day has already arrived, though, because his shot looks much cleaner than it did in college. He's also playing more minutes than expected at small forward and making the adjustment fairly easily.

The Magic took a risk drafting Gordon as high as they did, but he's already showing signs that they made the right choice.

7. Nerlens Noel, 76ers

Some of the names listed above have been surprises in the early going, but not Noel. He's exactly what we expected: a whirling dervish of a defender who can impact the game with blocks and steals. He's blocked three shots in a game twice already and also recorded a six-steal game.

While he's still a poor offensive player right now, he's made a few impressive passes and his game will continue to evolve over time.

8. Andrew Wiggins, Timberwolves

No rookie is facing more difficult challenges than Wiggins. Not just the pressure of being the top overall pick (which might actually be his smallest challenge), but also the fact he's being asked to defend top wings every night while trying to score on them, too, from the wing and post areas.

His overall motor has been less than impressive, but it's fair to guess the whole process has been overwhelming so far. Losing Ricky Rubio, who makes the game easier for him, also has hurt his overall impact.

But we see signs every night of just how special he can be, whether it's blocking a James Hardenlayup attempt in shocking fashion or finishing a baseline drive with almost no decent angle to do so.

9. Doug McDermott, Bulls

Most rooks have a steep learning curve relating to how they play off the ball on both ends of the court. McDermott, though, is the rare one who already gets it.

He is in semi-constant motion dodging through screens before making well-timed rim cuts. His intelligent play gets him rotation minutes on a contending team.

10. Nikola Mirotic, Bulls

The uniqueness of a big who can easily make the move to small forward while being a perimeter threat suggests Mirotic will earn more and more playing time as the season moves along. He is still adjusting to the quicker, longer opponents in the NBA, and the overall schedule, but he looks like a player the Bulls can count on.

11. Jusuf Nurkic, Nuggets

The NBA is a league full of men, putting many young rookies at a disadvantage. But not Nurkic. Though he's just 20, he is big, strong and already able to move equally large men around inside. His power at such a young age bodes well for his future.

12. Kostas Papanikolaou, Rockets

Much was expected of the 24-year-old pro, who is getting a lot of minutes for one of the top teams in the league. Before the Timberwolves game in Mexico City, he had been a disappointment, offering little besides some nice ball movement.

However, he does have talent and knows how to play, as we saw in his excellent game Wednesday. So seeing improvement from him quickly would not be a surprise.

13. Rodney Hood, Jazz

Hood is dealing with plantar fasciitis and has missed Utah's past three games. Before the injury, though, he had done a nice job of avoiding the common mistake young players make of trying to do too much. He was mostly focused on trying to finish plays, though it was something he was struggling with.

14. Shabazz Napier, Heat

The difference between being "the man" for a college team and just another guy on an NBA team, even in summer league, is vast. Napier now knows this firsthand. He is still a long way from looking like an everyday NBA player.

15. Zach LaVine, Timberwolves

LaVine has earned some quality playing time with Ricky Rubio sidelined with an injury and has looked more in control running the point since then. The Wolves are asking him to do very little besides making easy plays, and he has done that for the past two games.

But the question is: Can he play efficiently and productively at the same time?

16. P.J. Hairston, Hornets

Hairston leads all rooks off the bench in usage rate, showing his willingness to take shots or attack the rim. He is not shooting well yet but looks good on his release and has made a few nice plays by slashing off pinch-post entries.

If and when he gets his shot squared away, he has the look of a starting shooting guard in this league.

17. Jordan Clarkson, Lakers

He is fighting for more consistent rotation minutes as the Lakers sort out the mess they're in. Though he has not done much on offense, Clarkson is doing a nice job of moving his feet when defending drivers while keeping his arms up as they look to shoot. He is making it a bit tougher for opponents to score on him while not fouling, too.

18. James Ennis, Heat

Ennis is another player who is trying to earn more consistent minutes. He is competing hard and taking good shots overall as he learns to play behind Luol Deng, who is an excellent player for him to study.

19. Nik Stauskas, Kings

The thing about Stauskas that jumps out, aside from his shooting talent, is his overall confidence. He genuinely believes he belongs, which is important if he wants to stick in this league. However, he is shooting as if he is making lots of shots, which is just not the case. He is getting ample opportunity to shine, but has yet to take advantage of it.

20. Marcus Smart, Celtics

Before Smart went down with an ankle injury, he looked like a solid complement to Rondo and perhaps, ultimately, his successor. Although Smart is not the passer Rondo is and never will be, he looks like a playmaker on defense and a better natural scorer.

좋은글 잘 봤습니다. 엑섬이 재능은 있을지 몰라도 올시즌 활약이 그냥 그렇다고 생각했는데 1위라니 어색하네요;;

드래프트 전 3대 파포라 불리던 고든 본레 랜들이 다들 조용하네요. 부상이 너무 아쉽습니다. 페이튼도 좋았는데 올라디포 복귀 후 출전시간이 줄어든게 아쉽네요. 아직 2경기지만 스탯 하락이 크더라구요. 포니에 올라디포 페이튼 3가드 운영이면 좋을듯한데 초반이라 그런지 조금은 아쉽네요.
