리그의 농구 경기들을 캐벌리어스가 다 하는 것도 아닌데 클리블랜드 관련 주제를 두 번 연속으로 올리게 됐군요.

사실 중간에 있던 둘리틀 글은 2015 년 새해맞이 몇몇 선수들의  가상 신년 약속에 관련한 컬럼인데 신년 약속이 으레 다 그렇듯이 현실성 없는 얘기라 패스 ... (가령 새해에는 자유투를 잘 던지겠다는 드러먼드 ㅡ..ㅡ)

한편 이번 이야기는, 확실히 지배적인 볼 핸들러들이 있는 팀에 들어온 파워 포워드의 숙명이 이런 건가 봐요.

Despite a loaded lineup, things aren't going exactly as planned for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

르브론 제임스가 무릎 및 등 염좌로 인해 두 주 동안 활동을 못하게 되리란 배드 뉴스를 이번 주 클리블랜드 캐벌리어스가 받았다. 이 소식은 그동안 캡스에게 줄곧 닥친 숱한 낭패들 중 가장 최근의 것으로, 이런 난처한 일들로 인해 보기 흐뭇한 모습이 되었어야 할 시즌이 탈선을 이루고 말았다. 약체 팀들에게 당한 창피한 패배들로 시작해 공격에 대한 불만들과 시즌 내내 이어지는 수비 부진을 거쳐 앤더슨 바레장의 아킬레스 부상에 이르기까지, 클리블랜드에겐 줄줄이 사탕이었다. 몇 주 전 나는 캡스가 생산성과 케미스트리를 개선시킬 수 있을 법한 몇 가지 방도들을 짚었었는데, 저 개선책들 중 몇 가지는 결실을 맺기 시작하고 있지만, 지금 캡스가 당면하고 있는 훨씬 더 큰 이슈 하나가 있다: 케빈 러브의 만족.

미네소타 팀버울브즈가 오프시즌에 러브를 시장에 내놓고 있던 당시, 내가 갖고 있던 주요 우려 사항들 중 하나가 그의 계약 상태였다: 러브는 자신의 계약에 두 번의 잔여 시즌이 남아 있지만 그 두 번째 시즌에는 플레이어 옵션이 걸려 있다. 누구라도 주요 축적 자산을 내주면서까지 이 스타를 얻으려 하는 팀이라면 그가 휑하니 떠날 가능성과 2014-15 시즌을 오디션으로 변모시킬 위험까지 그대로 인수받기 마련이다. 이는 몇 시즌 전으로 거슬러 올라가 로스앤젤리스 클리퍼스가 크리스 폴을 받기로 한 무브를 만들었던 때와 그리 다르지 않는 상황이다. 저 앞의 위험도를 어느정도 완화시켰던 방법이 폴에게 옵션을 실행해주길 요청했던 일이다. 이로써 사실상 두 시즌 이상을 클리퍼로서 있으리란 보장을 받게 된 것이다. 그리고 이로 인해 클리퍼스는 로스터와 플레이북을 무릎 반사와 같은 즉각반응적 판단이 아닌 제법 장기적인 관점에서 꾸밀 수 있게 됐다. 그래서 러브에게도 나는 같은 요청이 만들어져야 한다고 생각했다. 전체 넘버 원 픽 앤드류 위긴스를 필두로 이왕 캡스가 상당한 자산 더미를 내주려 한다면, 자기들이 러브를 위한 행선지임을 입증할 충분한 시간을 받을 어느정도의 보증을 받아놨어야 했다.

그러나 저 대신, 캡스는 2 년 전 또 다른 로스앤젤레스 팀이 드와이트 하워드를 영입할 때 처했던 똑같은 입장에 처해 있다. 하워드는 계약에 한 시즌이 남아 있었고, 그래서 그를 더 오래 지킬 자원이 없었다. 이론상으로 하늘이 내려준 조합이었지만 (슈퍼스타에 또 슈퍼스타를 붙인), 레이커스는 하워드가 오프시즌에 재계약한다는 것이 마치 기정사실인 양 행동했다. 물론 레이커스는 더 큰 인상폭과 다섯 번째 시즌을 제시할 수 있는 CBA 상의 우위를 갖고 있긴 했다. 그러나 왜 LA에 다섯 시즌 남는 것이 최상의 결정인지를 하워드에게 보여줄 필요성을 레이커스는 깨닫지 못했다.

프리 에이젼트 입장에서 돈이 어디와 사인할지를 결정하는 주요 사항이긴 하지만, 다른 요인들도 존재한다. 특히 스타들 입장에선, 애초에 맥시멈 수준 계약이 정해져 있기 때문에, 늘어나는 달러 당 늘어나는 효용의 폭은 체감하는 효과를 가진다. 대신 "내가 어떻게 쓰여질 것인가?" 같은 질문들이 훨씬 더 중요해진다. 그래서 하워드 입장에서는 코비 브라이언트의 스크리너로서 리바운더로서 그리고 수비수로서 지명된다는 것이 충분히 만족스런 답이 아니었다. 하워드는 본인이 공격 진영에서 더 큰 역할을 가질 자격이 있다고 느꼈으며, 그리고 그런 일이 로스앤젤레스에서는 일어나지 않으리라 느꼈다. 이를 기억해 보시라. 실제로 그가 옳은지 아닌지는 상관이 없다. 이런 경우에서는 오직 당사자의 인식만이 현실적인 사안이다. 결국 가장 중요한 얘기로 남을 건지 떠날 건지 최종 결정권은 그가 쥐고 있다는 것이다.

그래서 지금, 캡스도 같은 시험을 당면하고 있다: 더 많은 돈과 제임스와 플레이한다는 약속을 넘어, 어떻게 러브가 클리블랜드에 남도록 "납득"시킬 텐가? 지금까지를 보면, 이들은 저 시험을 통과한 것으로 보이지 않는다. 러브가 플레이하는 모습을 보고 있노라면, 환멸감이 감지된다. 지금 그는 그냥 낫다 싶은 라이언 앤더슨이나 채닝 프라이로 줄어들었다. 저런 견실한 NBA 베테랑들을 폄하하는 것은 아니지만, 지난 시즌 일부로부터 NBA의  베스트 파워 포워드로 불렸던 선수에겐 극적인 하락이다. 오직 픽앤팝 위협원으로서 쓰여진다는 것은 그의 재능을 제대로 활용 못하는 것 뿐만 아니라, 이 선수에 대한 존중의 부족을 설파하는 것이기도 하다. 결국 이런 상황은 노력과 에너지가 줄어드는 일로 연결 된다. 러브의 최근 경기에서 (애틀란타 상대), 전반이 종료되기까지 6 분이란 시간 동안 러브가 14 회의 포제션들 중 볼을 네 번 '만졌다'. 뭐 네 번의 샷이라든가 득점 위치에서 네 번 만졌다는 이야기가 아니다. 3점 라인 근처에서 그냥 볼을 중개해 주는 등의 득점의 위협이라곤 전무한 패스들을 포함, 총 네 번의 터치들이다. 그리고 우연의 일치가 아니기라도 하듯이, 캡스는 저 시간 동안 다섯 점을 올렸다.

저런 면에서 봤을 때, 제임스의 부상은 그나마 불행 중 다행을 주기도 한다. 공격에서 러브가 더 두드러지게 나설 수 있는 기회. 캡스는 러브를 더 많은 셋트들에 참여시킬 두 주를 맞이하게 됐다. 여기에는 꼭 그가 더 많은 샷들을 던지라는 것이 아닌 공격에서 더 많이 참여하게 만들게 하자는 생각이 담겨져 있어야 한다. 하워드와 마찬가지로, 러브의 (그리고 캡스의) 이슈들 중 몇 가지는 스스로 자초한 것이기도 하며, 뿐만 아니라 하워드와 마찬가지로, 사실상 상관이 없다. 결국 관건은 팀이 스타 본인이 필요한 존재라 느끼고 진가가 인정되는 기분을 느끼게 하는 것이며, 그렇지 못한다면 팀은 온갖 자산들을 고가의 렌탈에게 퍼붓는 꼴에 그칠 수 밖에 없다.

• 금요일 밤 토론토 랩터스가 골든스테이트 워리어스를 방문하게 되면서 NBA 최고의 성적을 가진 두 팀 사이의 대결이 이뤄지게 됐다. 이 두 팀 모두 깊이 있는 로테이션과 강력한 포인트 가드 플레이를 내세우고 있을 뿐만 아니라 자산의 지속성을 가지고 있기도 하다. 우리가 이번 시즌 지켜보고 있듯이, 순위 정상권에 있는 대부분의 팀들은 (랩터스, 워리어스, 멤피스 그리즐리스, 워싱턴 위저즈, 포틀랜드 트레일블레이져스) 로스터 변경이 매우 적으며, 그래서 저런 지속성으로 인해 선수들 사이와 성향에 익숙함이 늘어나게 됐고 더 나은 작전수행이 가능해졌다. 골든스테이트가 코칭 변경이 있긴 했지만, 새로운 플레이북이 선호하는 위치를 파악해야 하는 새로운 재능들에 적응할 필요가 없다면야 마스터하기에 더 쉽다. 또한 언더스터디(주연이 아닌 대기조)가 자신의 역할을 확실하게 파악할 수록, 부상으로 인한 주요 조각의 공백을 (워리어스는 앤드류 보것, 랩터스는 더마 드로잔) 극복하기가 쉬워 진다.

• 금요일 또 지켜볼 만한 것: 라존 론도가 댈러스 매버릭스 소속으로서 보스턴에 처음으로 돌아오게 된다. 그곳에서 여러 성공적인 시즌들에 걸쳐 중심 역할을 했기 때문에 셀틱스 팬 베이스로부터 따뜻한 환대를 받을 것은 물론이다. 다만 의문스러운 것은 셀틱스 GM 대니 에인지가 론도 이적에 너무 오래 주저하고 있던 것은 아닌지 그리고 애초에 더 나은 딜이 있던 것은 아닌지다. 하지만 본인이 전에 겪었던 ACL 부상이 이슈가 아님을 보여주기 위해 론도가 충분한 경기들을 플레이할 필요가 있긴 했다. 론도도 시즌이 끝나면 비제한 프리 에이젼트가 되며, 따라서 지금 흐르는 시간이 시한 폭탄과 같은 클리블랜드와 똑같은 과제를 맵스가 통과할 수 있을지 지켜보는 것도 재미있을 것이다. 그래도 맵스에겐 다행스럽게도 자신들이 떠나보냈던 자산 패키지는 훨씬 부담이 적었다.

• 화요일 밤의 랩터스-블레이져스 연장전은 비디오 리뷰로 인해 정지 상황이 많이 나왔는데, 코트사이드 모니터를 통한 총 일곱 번의 상의들이 나왔다. 뉴져지 시코커스에 리플레이 센터를 설립하며 리그가 실시간 리뷰에 진전을 이루긴 했지만, 여전히 경기의 흐름엔 부정적인 영향을 미치고 있다. 특히 경기의 막판 승부처에. 그런데 또 이번이 시즌 중 가장 많은 리뷰들이 나왔던 경기도 아니었다. 그 영예는 11 월 22 일 맵스와 휴스턴 로켓츠 사이의 시합에 가게 된다. 그것도 모두 정규 시간에서만.

• 이 주의 트윗은 Arizona Republic의 Paul Coro가 주인공이 됐다. 코로는 Sacramento Bee의 Jason Jones가 한 달 전과는 (코치 마이크 말론을 자르기 전) 새크라멘토 킹스의 모습이 어찌나 다른지에 대해 올린 트윗에 대해 자신의 생각을 말했다.

The Cleveland Cavaliers received bad news this week when they learned LeBron James is expected to miss two weeks of action due to knee and back strains. It's the latest in a number of setbacks that have besieged the Cavs, derailing what should have been a storybook season. From embarrassing losses to inferior teams to quibbles about the offense to the season-long defensive struggles and the Anderson Varejao Achilles injury, it's been one thing after another for Cleveland. A few weeks ago, I detailed some ways the Cavs could improve their production and chemistry, and, while some of those fixes are starting to bear fruit, the Cavs have a much larger issue at hand: the contentment of Kevin Love.

When the Minnesota Timberwolves were shopping Love in the offseason, one of the major concerns I had was his contract status: Love had two seasons remaining on his deal but holds a player option on the second season. Whomever would be giving up a major asset arsenal to acquire the star would be inheriting the risk of his flight and turning the 2014-15 season into an audition. It's a situation that's not dissimilar to what the Los Angeles Clippers faced a few seasons back when they made their move to acquire Chris Paul; the way they mitigated some of that risk was by demanding that Paul exercise his option, effectively guaranteeing he'd be a Clipper for at least two seasons. This, in turn, allowed the Clippers to shape their roster and their playbook with a certain amount of long-term perspective, rather than knee-jerk, reactionary decisions. For Love, I felt the same requirement should have been made. If the Cavs are going to give up a bevy of assets, not the least of which was No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins, they needed to have some assurance that Love would give them ample time to prove Cleveland was the destination for him.

Instead, the Cavs have put themselves in the same position the other Los Angeles team found itself in a couple of years ago when it acquired Dwight Howard. Howard had one season remaining on his deal, so there was no recourse to keep him longer. It was a match made in heaven on paper (superstar teams up with another superstar), but the Lakers behaved as if it were a foregone conclusion Howard would re-sign in the offseason. Sure, they had the CBA-dictated advantage of being able to offer bigger raises and a fifth season, but they failed to recognize the need to show Howard why staying five seasons in L.A. would be his best decision.

While money is a major determinant in where a free agent decides to sign, there are other factors. For stars in particular, because they are slotted into maximum-level contracts, the marginal utility of each added dollar has a diminished effect. Instead, questions such as "How will I be used?" become much more important. For Howard, being Kobe Bryant's designated screener, rebounder and defender was not a satisfactory enough answer; he felt he deserved a bigger role on the offensive end, and he felt that would not happen in Los Angeles. Remember -- it doesn't matter whether he's actually right. In this case, perception is the only reality. At the end of the day, he holds the ultimate decision of whether to stay or go.

Now, the Cavs are facing the same test: How do you "sell" Love on staying in Cleveland beyond the promise of more money and playing with James? So far, they don't seem to be passing that test. Watching Love play, the disenchantment is palpable. He's been reduced to a glorified Ryan Anderson or Channing Frye; no disrespect to those solid NBA vets, but that's a dramatic decline for a player who some were dubbing the best power forward in the NBA last season. To be used solely as a pick-and-pop threat isn't just an underutilization of his talent, but communicates a lack of respect to the player, which then recycles into reduced effort and energy. In Love's last game (against Atlanta), he went through a six-minute stretch to end the first half during which hetouched the ball four times out of 14 possessions. That's not four shots or four touches in scoring position -- that's four total touches, including nonscoring threat passes, like swinging the ball around the 3-point line. Not coincidentally, the Cavs scored five points in that stretch.

In that sense, James' injury brings with it a silver lining -- the opportunity to feature Love more prominently on offense. The Cavs have two weeks to incorporate him into more sets, with the idea being not necessarily to get him more shots but to make him more involved in the offense. Like Howard, some of Love's (and the Cavs') issues are self-inflicted, but also like Howard, that doesn't really matter. The onus is on the team to make the star feel wanted and appreciated, or else they just gave up all those assets for a high-priced rental.

• Friday night's slate of games features a matchup between two of the best records in the NBA, as the Toronto Raptors visit the Golden State Warriors. Both of these teams feature deep rotations and strong point guard play, but they also have the asset of continuity. As we've observed this season, most of the teams toward the top of the standings (the Raptors, Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, Washington Wizards and Portland Trail Blazers) have had minimal roster turnover, and that continuity produces better familiarity between players and their tendencies, improving execution. Golden State did have a coaching change, but a new playbook is easier to master when you don't also have to adjust to new talents trying to find their comfort zones. It's also easier to overcome the absence of a main cog due to injury (Warriors withAndrew Bogut, Raptors with DeMar DeRozan), as the understudy will often have a clearer understanding of his role.

• Also featured Friday: Rajon Rondo makes his first return to Boston with the Dallas Mavericks. He should get a warm welcome from the Celtics fan base, as he was a pivotal part in many successful campaigns there. One has to wonder whether Celtics GM Danny Ainge sat too long on moving Rondo and whether there was a better deal to be had earlier; however, Rondo needed to play enough games to demonstrate that his prior ACL injury would not be an issue. Rondo will also be an unrestricted free agent at season's end, so it will be interesting to see the Mavs go through the same challenge that Cleveland is going through in making the ticking time bomb feel appreciated enough. Luckily for the Mavs, the asset package they parted ways with was far less lucrative.

• Tuesday night's Raptors-Blazers overtime game featured a lot of stoppage due to video review, with a total of seven consultations with the courtside monitor. While the league has taken steps to streamline the review process by creating the central replay center in Secaucus, New Jersey, it still had a negative impact on the flow of the game, particularly down the stretch. Even so, it wasn't the most-reviewed game of the season -- that honor would go to the Nov. 22 matchup between the Mavs and the Houston Rockets, which had eight reviews -- all in regulation.

• Tweet of the week goes to the Arizona Republic's Paul Coro, who remarked on the Sacramento Bee's Jason Jones' tweet on how the Sacramento Kings look so different than they did a month ago (before the firing of coach Mike Malone).

마이애미의 보쉬도 불만이 많았겠죠. 다만 스스로 결성한 빅3였기에 좀 더 참을수밖에 없었고 우승이라는 성과가 돌아왔기에 4시즌간 지속될 수 있었겠죠.

하지만 케빈 러브의 경우 우승급의 팀성적,본인의 어느정도 역할증가가 없이는 클블에 남기 어려워보이네요.

러브가 불만을 표시하기전에.. 본인이 지금 할 수 있는게 뭔지가..
올시즌에 클블애들이 왜 3점 라인에 섰을 때만 주는가보면.. 러브가 감량한 후로 인사이드에서 비벼주면서 포스트업을 하질 못하더군요.
파워를 잃어버린 탓에 고전을 하는게 보입니다. 올시즌 야투율도 좋지 못하구요.
지금 폼을 보면 오히려 클블이 엄청 후회하고 있을 거 같네요..
