Can Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook rally the Thunder for the eighth playoff seed?
Oklahoma City Thunder | Reach playoffs 60.5 percent of simulations
could pry Brook Lopez away from Brooklyn.
New Orleans Pelicans | Reach playoffs 26.2 percent of simulations
Phoenix Suns | Reach playoffs 18.6 percent of simulations
News and notes

With a little more than two months left in the 2014-15 NBA regular season, the hottest competition is at the bottom of the Western Conference playoff race, where the New Orleans Pelicans, Oklahoma City Thunder and Phoenix Suns are separated by two games in a battle for what will likely be one spot.
Phoenix has the edge in the standings and Oklahoma City has the most talent and playoff experience with its duo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, yet New Orleans has actually been the hottest team of late, fighting its way back in the race.
With the help of simulating the season 1,000 times to see how often each team is projected to make the playoffs, let's take a closer look at the three contenders -- and how they might boost their chances between now and April.
As they attempt to close the gap on the Pelicans and Suns, the Thunder haven't been able to sustain any momentum since a seven-game winning streak in early December just after Durant and Westbrook returned to the lineup. Their most promising stretch since then, four consecutive wins in mid-January, was followed by four wins and five losses. And the excitement of Tuesday's win in New Orleans dissipated when Oklahoma City lost to the Pelicans on Friday at home.
Still, after Sunday's 23-point win over the Blake Griffin-less Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix's loss at the buzzer, the Thunder find themselves leading the race for eighth in terms of projections. Oklahoma City is now just a game back in the loss column and has gone 15-8 (.652) in games Durant has started and finished, a far better mark than the Suns (.547) or Pelicans (.529) over the course of the season.
The win over the Clippers was intriguing because the Thunder's 131 points contrasted with their difficulty scoring in recent games. Before Sunday, Oklahoma City was scoring at exactly an average rate relative to its opponents' season-long performance in the 23 complete games Durant has played.
With Serge Ibaka slumping beyond the arc and Reggie Jackson ineffective in a smaller role since Dion Waiters' arrival, the Thunder's role players haven't given them much help. Collectively, Oklahoma City's other players have a .517 true shooting percentage (league average is .535) since Westbrook returned. Last season, they combined for a .541 TS%.
Brook Lopez (.545 TS%) could help as a third scorer if the Brooklyn Nets are willing to trade him for the package the Thunder reportedly offered in January. However, Lopez wouldn't solve Oklahoma City's shooting problems. The Thunder are shooting just 32.1 percent from beyond the arc, which ranks 26th in the NBA, and have actually been worse (30.8 percent) with both stars in the lineup. The Thunder could use a 3-and-D specialist such as Arron Afflalo (.538 TS% this season, but .563 career) to give them more balance than Scott Brooks' current options next to Durant on the wing.
Though the Pelicans are still a game behind Phoenix in the standings, they actually are the likelier playoff team in simulations for a couple of reasons. First, New Orleans has the tiebreaker edge, having won the season series with Oklahoma City 3-1 and taken the first of three games with the Suns (each team hosts one of the remaining two games). Second, the Pelicans have the easier remaining schedule. Their remaining games average just 0.1 points per game more difficult than average, based on opponent and location. Phoenix's remaining games are 1.2 points per game more difficult than average, one of the league's hardest slates down the stretch.
A 35-point drubbing Saturday at the hands of the Chicago Bulls reiterated how dependent New Orleans is on MVP candidate Anthony Davis, who left the game with a right shoulder sprain (the Pelicans were plus-2 in the 13 minutes he played). But the Pelicans, whose playoff hopes were derailed in part by injuries a year ago, have successfully navigated the absence of starting point guard Jrue Holiday (expected out through the All-Star break) with Tyreke Evans filling in at the point.
Without Holiday, New Orleans has beaten four of the league's top 10 teams, including last Monday's win that snapped the Atlanta Hawks' winning streak at 19 games.
Having traded their first-round pick to acquire Omer Asik, the Pelicans have few real assets for a trade. However, even luring a buyout contender could help their thin backcourt. Louisiana nativeMarcus Thornton, for one, would upgrade New Orleans' perimeter shooting.
Unbelievably, the Suns suffered another heartbreaking loss Sunday night whenDeMarcus Cousins' shot at the buzzer bounced on the rim three times before rolling around and through to break a tie and hand Phoenix an 85-83 defeat at Sacramento. The loss was the Suns' fifth of the season by precisely two points, and ninth by three points or fewer; they're 2-9 in games decided by a single score. Only the Indiana Pacers (2-10) have a worse record in such games.
Obviously, the race for eighth would look dramatically different had Phoenix even gone 5-6 in those games. The Suns would then have an enormous five-game lead over the Thunder. Yet oddly Phoenix doesn't actually qualify as unlucky in terms of expected record based on point differential. The Suns have a tendency to get blown out when they play poorly (they've lost five times by 20-plus points, the most of any above-.500 team), so their point differential (plus-1.4) is slightly worse than Oklahoma City's (plus-1.5). That makes it unlikely the Suns will improve much on their 45-win pace with their current personnel.
After adding Brandan Wright last month, it will be difficult for Phoenix to upgrade the roster without a blockbuster trade that consolidates several of the team's assets into a star. Naturally, such a trade is difficult to pull off. So the Suns' biggest move might be dealing center Miles Plumlee, pushed to a smaller role by Wright's arrival, likely for a draft pick.
• There was no need to debate who would replace Griffin on the West All-Star roster when the Clippers announced he would miss the game due to surgery to treat a staph infection in his right elbow. Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers was the obvious choice, as Insider's Bradford Doolittle explained last week.
In the event Anthony Davis is also unable to play (he's day-to-day), NBA commissioner Adam Silver will have a more difficult decision on a 15th player for the West roster. Another big would make sense to balance five post players and seven on the perimeter, and of that group I would favor Tyson Chandler of the Dallas Mavericks. Chandler ranks 13th in the league in wins above replacement player, 11th in the wins above replacement stat derived from ESPN's real plus-minus and sixth in win shares. That said, if you preferred Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors, DeAndre Jordan of the Clippers or either Mike Conley or Zach Randolph of the Memphis Grizzlies, I couldn't blame you.
• The battle for the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference isn't as meaningful, given the lower stakes and likelihood of a below-.500 team knocking off a top seed, but it's actually more crowded. With the Indiana Pacers beating theCharlotte Hornets at the buzzer on Sunday, there are now six teams (Charlotte, Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and Indiana) separated by just 2.5 games for the seventh and eighth seeds.
The Hornets and Heat still have the edge for claiming those last two spots, but with so many teams in the mix a lot can and will change between now and April -- most notably the potential of the Pacers getting Paul George back at some point for the stretch run.
• The Hawks' weekend failed to provide a conclusive answer about where Atlanta stands relative to the best teams in the West. Two days after beating Golden State 124-116 in a meeting of the two teams with the best records in the NBA, the Hawks lost 94-88 on Sunday at Memphis. Without a Warriors-Grizzlies matchup at Oracle Arena to complete the round-robin series, the main takeaways are that all three teams are really good and home-court advantage does still matter.
