산업 사회의 기계적 소외의 잔흔이 사라진 후 새로운 세상이 온다면, 반드시 새로운 세상의 체제와 시스템에 적용되어야 할 생각이고, 발견이다. 

그의 생각은 다음과 같은 사실의 발견으로 부터 출발한다. 제한되고 좁은 환경에서 창의적인 고도의 성과를 빠르게 내기위해 보너스를 제안받았을 때, 직관과는 다르게 오히려 낮은 수준의 성과가 나온다는 사실. 기계적이고, 반복적인 작업 환경에서는 높은 수준의 보너스가 높은 수준의 성과를 내는데 도움이 되지만 창의적이고 복잡하며 열린 환경에서는 그렇지 않다는 사실이다. 

하지만 과학이 경험적으로 증명해주는 것과는 다르게 현실적으로 많은 경영 환경에서는 아직도 이 부분은 직관적으로 운영되고 있다. 더 많은 보너스가 더 높은 성과를 보장해주는 것처럼. 

보너스가 해답이 아니라면, 창의적이고 복잡하며 열린 환경에서 보다 높은 성과를 낼 수 있기 위해서는 무엇이 필요할까? 그와 그의 세계가 주장하는 것은 다음 세 가지이다. 

1. 자치 (Autonomy)

- 스스로 자신의 삶을 통제하는 힘 (The urge to direct own life)

2. 장인 (Mastery)

- 무언가를 더욱 더 잘하고자 하는 갈망 (The desire to do something better and better)

3. 목적 (Purpose)

- 우리가 하는 일에 대한 갈망. 보다 큰 무언가를 위해 살아가고자 하는 방향성 (Yearning to do what we do. Service to do something larger than ourselves)

스스로 방향성을 정하고, 통제하는 삶은 깊은 소속감과 주인 의식을 제공하지만, 조직이 정해준 프로세스와 시스템을 준수하고 따라가야만 하는 삶은 기계적 소외감만을 잉태하게 될 뿐이다.

- All of these ideas will be especially relevant to the newest entrants to the workplace: Millenials/Gen Y. I have been managing and developing employees under the autonomy, mastery, purpose model for several years -- I am an OD professional. To make this all really work, the requirements/expectations and measurements for each role need to be transparent. "Get your work done" is viable only when people truly understand what others think "getting your work done" really means. So, each employee needs to know the results that are expected. (not in an innovation-limiting sense ... just final expected outcomes) 

In my experience, this is where organizations REALLY fall down. They give people responsibility and lattitude, but they do not clearly define the results expected and how progress will be measured. So, no one REALLY knows how anyone is doing. And we wonder why businesses ultimately fail.
