Insider Best sophomores of the season
Trey Burke, PG
Second team
Steven Adams, C
Mason Plumlee, C
Robert Covington, SF NBA
Ben McLemore, SG
Dennis Schroder, PG
Honorable mention
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Pistons
Kelly Olynyk, Celtics
Alex Len, Suns
Solomon Hill, Pacers
Cody Zeller, Hornets
Michael Carter-Williams, Bucks

This season will likely be remembered for Golden State's incredible record, LeBron's return to Cleveland, the ascendancy to "All-World" for Steph Curry and James Harden, and the arrival of Rudy Gobert. At the start of the season we could have named dozens of centers globally that NBA teams would have preferred over Gobert. But now only a precious few would be named before the "Stifle Tower," who finishes the season at the top of our sophomore rankings. Although Gobert's second-year classmates have not made a big impression on the league just yet, Gobert himself more than makes up for it. Here's a look at the top 10 sophs from this season, broken up into teams featuring three bigs and two guards. First teamRudy Gobert, C A walking (and shot-blocking) advertisement that proves (a) big men can develop very late, and (b) developing players should be part of the business plan for all NBA teams. Gobert's impact on the Jazz has been huge this season, and teams that passed on him in the draft made a big mistake. His elite shot-blocking and rim protection skills are well-documented and have helped turn the Jazz into one of the top defensive teams in the league since Gobert became a full-time starter. His hands on offense have improved, too, making him a legitimate threat in pick-and-rolls. He projects to be a double-double machine who blocks over two shots a game, which would put him in rare company (only two players accomplished that this season). Gobert will be in the running for All-NBA teams, All-Star Games and defensive player of the year awards for years. He might even anchor a France team that can knock off Team USA in international play one day. That's the kind of impact he's having on professional basketball. Gorgui Dieng, C Like last season, Dieng stumbled out of the starting blocks this season. But, unlike last season, he hasn't finished this season looking like a future All-Star. The difference might be explained by the Wolves surrounding Dieng with very good veteran talent a season ago compared to the rookies and second-year men he mostly played with in 2014-15. Still, the question now is, "Can Dieng be a full-time starter for a playoff team?" It's an important question considering the Wolves could draft a top big man in June. Dieng needs to find a hotter and more consistent motor, for starters. He also allows drivers to get an angle to the rim so he can block their shot from the side, rather than squaring them up and preventing the drive from even happening; it's a habit he needs to break. But there's still a lot to like about his game. He finishes shots inside, has a midrange jumper that is hard to defend and shoots it with touch, and is able to shot-fake defenders and get by them to the rim. Giannis Antetokounmpo, SF A rapidly maturing skill game has helped Antetokounmpo remain on schedule to be a star in this league. The game has slowed down for him, meaning he makes easier plays now and shows greater discipline in his shot selection and on the defensive end. At just 20, he understands how to take advantage of his size and length to good effect. Like a lot of perimeter players his size and age, Antetokounmpo still needs work on his dribble-drive game and his post-up arsenal, but there's no reason to worry that he won't figure that part out in time. He's the most improved player from this class. As he begins to assert himself more on offense, he could take yet another big jump next season. He's already made a leap on defense this season, drawing comparisons to Paul George. The final step for him will be his ability to shoot from behind the line, because adding that to his game would catapult him into All-Star territory. With that said, Antetokounmpo is making steady progress forward like another wing star, Kawhi Leonard, who, remember, also wasn't a top-10 pick and looked only like a solid "3-and-D" guy in his first two seasons, not the Finals MVP and All-Star caliber player he is now. Victor Oladipo, SG Other than Gobert, no second-year player has had a better 2015 than Oladipo, who forms an athletically elite backcourt with rookie Elfrid Payton. Oladipo is using his speed and power to get to the rim, be a threat in transition and earn more free throws than he did early in his career. He can be a primary ballhandler with his dribbling skills but is best served as a scoring guard, which is why the partnership with Payton is so promising. Oladipo is still an average, at best, 3-point shooter, but he has had two very strong months in which he made over 40 percent of his 3s. So it's possible, maybe even likely, that he'll end up being a good long-distance shooter in the next few seasons. That would be key for the Magic, considering Payton's shooting woes. On defense, Oladipo doesn't have the length and overall game of Dwyane Wade -- the guy many people compared him to coming out of college -- but it's fair to assume he'll become a solid defender, too. Trey Burke, PG To be fair, Burke makes the first team simply because no other point guard has really excelled in this class. But that doesn't take away from the fact that Burke has played an important part in the Jazz's late-season surge since becoming the team's sixth man. Although he has struggled to make shots all season, he has done a fine job protecting the ball while still being aggressive as a scorer, which the Jazz needed. He has also been dangerous in transition, pushing the ball under control and ready to make the defense pay by finding shooters when it opens up. But since Dante Exum looks like Utah's long-term point guard, Burke still has to prove himself as the backup scoring point guard who eventually earns the right to start for someone else. To do that, he has to figure out how to finish off drives that don't quite get to the rim, while continuing to improve on his deep shooting. Second teamSteven Adams, C Adams hasn't seen a real jump in his production this season, even though he's become a smarter player on offense. Still, he fills a basic role for his team as a hard-nosed defender and rebounder, who also takes pride in setting good screens. Adams would likely be seen as more valuable if Kevin Durant had played all season and the Thunder were battling at the top of the West. Mason Plumlee, C Plumlee is very similar to Adams in that he is more or less the same guy he was last season. This is fine, considering he was surprisingly good as a rookie. He worked hard to move from his coach's dog house to a significant role on the team this season, and continued to prove he's a strong rebounder and decent shot-blocker. Robert Covington, SF One of the better-kept secrets of the NBA season, Covington is a classic athletic wing who can create chaos on defense and make 3s. There are only a handful of guys who play like him, including Kawhi Leonard andDeMarre Carroll. Of course, Covington doesn't get much recognition because he plays for a team that's piling up losses. That will change, though, when Philly moves into playoff contention in the future. Ben McLemore, SG McLemore hasn't lived up to expectations so far, but he's clearly demonstrating talent as a shooter and transition player who competes hard. There is a solid place for him in that role. He's still only 22, too, so he has time to add more skills (scoring and getting free throws) to his overall game, just like Jimmy Butler did in his third season. Dennis Schroder, PG A most-improved player candidate among his classmates, Schroder has played a prominent role for the Hawks all season after showing very little as a rookie. He has a knack for passing, and his quickness with the ball gets him into great spots on the court. If he can improve his scoring (finishing inside), he can make a jump into a considerably more valued player. Honorable mention
