President Lee Jae Myung holds a summit with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Friday, as Seoul moves to deepen cooperation with Paris and upgrade bilateral ties. Macron arrived in Korea the previous day on a state visit, the first by a French leader in 11 years.

이재명 대통령이 에마뉘엘 마크롱 프랑스 대통령과 정상회담을 갖고 양국 관계 심화 및 격상 추진에 나선다. 마크롱 대통령은 전날 국빈 방문으로 한국에 도착했으며, 이는 11년 만의 프랑스 정상 첫 방문이다.

The summit begins with an official welcome, to be followed by talks and a signing ceremony for agreements and memorandums of understanding. The two sides are expected to discuss expanding cooperation in trade and investment, as well as in sectors such as artificial intelligence, nuclear energy and space.

정상회담은 공식 환영식으로 시작되며, 이후 회담과 양해각서 서명식이 이어질 예정이다. 양측은 무역·투자 분야 협력 확대는 물론 인공지능, 원자력, 우주 등 분야에서의 협력 확대 방안을 논의할 것으로 예상된다.

Energy cooperation is also likely to be discussed, as global supply concerns have grown amid prolonged instability in the Middle East. The talks are expected to cover broader regional and international issues, given France’s role as this year’s G7 chair and a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.

중동 지역의 장기적인 불안정으로 인해 세계 에너지 공급에 대한 우려가 커지고 있는 만큼, 에너지 협력 문제도 논의될 가능성이 높다. 프랑스가 올해 G7 의장국이자 유엔 안전보장이사회의 상임이사국이라는 점을 고려할 때, 이번 회담에서는 보다 광범위한 지역 및 국제 문제도 다뤄질 것으로 예상된다.

The presidential office said the visit will mark an upgrade in bilateral ties to “global strategic partnership,” as the two countries seek closer coordination on key policy goals and future industries. The meeting is the third between the two leaders following earlier encounters at the G7 and G20 summits last year.

대통령실은 이번 방문이 양국 관계를 "글로벌 전략적 파트너십"으로 격상시키는 계기가 될 것이며, 양국은 주요 정책 목표와 미래 산업 분야에서 더욱 긴밀한 협력을 모색할 것이라고 밝혔다. 이번 회담은 지난해 G7 및 G20 정상회의에 이어 두 정상 간 세 번째 만남이다.
