No. 1: 3-point percentage
No. 2. 3-point attempts
No. 3: Fast pace
No. 4: Playing with the pass

The way the NBA plays offense is evolving. Because of the lingering effects of the league cracking down on perimeter contact more than a decade ago, the rising influence of analytics and the desire to imitate successful teams, coaches throughout the league have been rethinking the way their teams try to score.
For this year's NBA Preview, ESPN the Magazine asked me to quantify the progressiveness of each team's offense. Here's a look at the four key factors we identified, their importance to offensive success and a look at which teams are playing the most modern style.
No. 1: 3-point percentage
On one level, it's hard to say teams are emphasizing 3-point accuracy any more than years past. As I noted in projecting the future of the 3-pointer in the NBA last spring, percentages have tended to be fairly stable leaguewide for many years. In fact, last season's 35.0 percent shooting was worse than the average performance of the NBA since the line was moved back to 23 feet, 9 inches in 1997-98 (35.4 percent).
However, shooting the 3 accurately has never been more important. In fact, it's remarkable how well 3-point percentage tracked with team offensive rating last season.
There was a .73 correlation between 3-point percentage and offensive rating in 2014-15, suggesting that nearly half of the variation among offenses is attributable to the differences in how well they shoot 3s. (Of course, that doesn't mean good 3-point shooting entirely causes good offense, since the opposite is also true.) That's the second-strongest link in a season in NBA history, trailing only 2009-10 (.77), and it's no surprise that 3-point percentage has become a more important indicator of offensive success over time:
No. 2. 3-point attempts
There's an obvious explanation for why 3-point accuracy has grown in importance: Teams are shooting more 3s than ever before, as Insider's Tom Haberstroh broke down in a feature during last year's NBA Finals. And while the value in making 3s is easy to see, it might still come as something more of a surprise that the mere act of attempting them is an important predictor of offensive success:
In part because of a pair of analytically inclined outliers -- theHouston Rockets and Philadelphia 76ers, who had the right idea but not the right personnel on offense last season -- the correlation here (.42) isn't as strong as with 3-point percentage.
But all other things equal, the more 3s a team takes, the better -- both because the 3 tends to be a more efficient shot and because of the gravity 3-point shooters create by keeping their defenders at home on the perimeter.
No. 3: Fast pace
While the value of the 3 has long been a key tenet of NBA statistical analysis, the desire to play fast is a more recent philosophical shift. Even five years ago, conventional wisdom had it that a slow pace was the way to go because of the strong historical tendency for slow-paced teams to be stingier on defense. That's since changed because of a desire to avoid playing deep into the shot clock, since efficiency tends to plummet dramatically as the clock ticks down.
Consider Houston's evolution: In part because they were built around center Yao Ming, the Rockets played at a below-average pace through 2008-09. After two years in the top 10 in possessions per 48 minutes, they were still just 11th in 2011-12. Since then, Houston has been one of the league's five fastest teams each of the last three seasons, including No. 1 in 2012-13 and second in the league last season. When Sam Hinkie left the Rockets' front office to run the 76ers, they jumped from 21st to the league's fastest pace virtually overnight. (Philadelphia was seventh last season.)
It's a little more challenging to find statistical justification here. The relationship between pace and success on offense is generally positive but not entirely consistent (the correlation is just .13).
Still, the trend has been toward faster pace. The 96.3 possessions per 48 minutes teams averaged in 2013-14 was the highest mark in two decades, and the leaguewide pace remained at that level last season.
No. 4: Playing with the pass
Since the San Antonio Spurs blew the Miami Heat away with their passing during the 2014 Finals, other teams have discussed their desire to imitate the Spurs' gorgeous ball movement. The Atlanta Hawks, coached by former San Antonio assistant Mike Budenholzer, achieved something similar en route to their unexpected 60-win season in 2014-15. However, it's hard to prove in a larger sense that teams have really followed the Spurs' example -- or even that they should.
For historical context, the percentage of field goals off assists is probably the best measure available. That did increase slightly last season to 58.7 percent from 58.3 percent in 2013-14. But the leaguewide assist rate was higher in 2012-13 (59.6 percent), and none of those marks are high by historical standards. From 1992-93 through 2003-04, the supposed heyday of isolation basketball in the NBA, more than 60 percent of baskets came off assists each season.
Moving to passes per possession, available via SportVU tracking data on NBA.com/Stats, the relationship with team offensive rating last season is not just negligible but actually negative (-.14):
Now, this data should not be taken as license for players to fire up the first available shot. (Sorry, Lakers guards.) There are a couple of effects at play here. All other things equal, more passing is surely preferable. But all things aren't so equal in the NBA, because some teams are better at creating shots individually than others.
The Oklahoma City Thunder can get away with less passing than almost any other team (only the Denver Nuggets averaged fewer passes per possession), thanks to the individual brilliance of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The Utah Jazz, who averaged a league-high 3.9 passes per possession, often need to share the ball to find good shots. According to Synergy Sports tracking on NBA.com/Stats, the Jazz ranked 29th in points per play on isolations. (Oklahoma City was sixth.)
Having looked at these fours indicators, I took the percentage each team is projected be better or worse than league average in each category (using 2014-15 data for passes per possession) and combined them to create a measure of "progressiveness" that tracks reasonably well with projections for offensive rating based on ESPN's real plus-minus.
As with each individual factor, the correlation is far from perfect. Offense in the NBA hasn't been solved, and the best style depends on the talent on the court. Still, as teams continue to have success playing quickly and shooting the 3, expect the league to continue to move toward a more modern philosophy of offense.
Below all 30 teams are ranked by their projected offense for 2015-16. However, in the right column is how modern that offense is.
