Giving birth overseas (원정출산)

As you know, both ex-announcer 노현정 and KBS announcer 이지연 gave birth in America a couple of weeks ago. This could be considered a coinsidence but some people don't agree and it's not their own stories.

Thousands of Korea mothers believe that their soon-to-be-born children might be able to have more benefits than those will be born in Korea. Some estimates say as many as 5,000 Korean pregnant women a year go abroad to have their babies, spending roughly over 25,000 dollars each. For boys, there is the extra incentive of being exempt from the obligation of more than two years of military service if they are not a korean citizen.

But 2 years ago, the Korean Nationality Act was changed. Even If someone who has got a dual nationality, they ought to oblige more than two years of military service whether they give up their Korean citizen or not. Now, they can't not help following it.

However, this trend is still attractive for mothers who are sick and tired  of paying money for private education. Travel agencies openly advertise "Group birthing Tours" to not only the USA but to countries like Canada or Australia for needs of such mothers.

There are several reasons for having babies overseas. They'd like to meet the trend of globalization and to have a chance of education in low prices.

Some media and people has been critical of travelling mothers, depicting them as unpatriotic and selfish sometimes.
