멤피스 그리즐리스 포인트 가드 마이크 콘리가 현재 NBA 역사에서 가장 풍성한 계약을 보유하고 있다.

하지만 아무래도 그렇게 오래 가진 않을 것이다.

그렇다면 가장 높은 액수를 받는 선수의 다음 왕관은 누가 쓰게 될까? 그리고 NBA의 첫 200 밀리언 달러 맨은 누가 될까? 이에 우리는 리그 전역에 걸쳐 아홉 명의 이름을 대게 됐고, 이 중 탑 4의 후보들이 있다.

잭팟을 터뜨리려면 무엇이 필요한가?

리그 역사에서 가장 큰 계약을 받는다는 것은 제때에 제곳에 있어야 한다는 걸 필요로 한다. 즉 본인의 최정점 근처에 있을 때 프리 에이전시로 뛰어 들어야 한다는 것인데, 이때에 있어야 규정들이 자기 편을 들어주기도 하고 이때에 있어야 본인의 생산성이 그런 드높은 액수를 정당화시켜주기 마련이다. 그러나 또 이렇다 하더라도 가장 큰 계약을 얻어내기 위해서는 유별난 상황들이 수반되어야 한다.

이번 년도는 우주의 기운이 콘리에게 몰렸다. 일단 콘리는 2007년 전체 4순위로 멤피스에 의해 드래프트 되어 커리어 전체를 동일 팀에서 플레이해 왔다. 그리고 이제 28세, 즉 5년 계약을 따내기에 딱 좋은 나이에 프리 에이전시로 나왔고, 여기에다 2016년에 프리 에이전시로 나옴으로써 리그 역사에서 가장 판매자에게 유리한 시장에 입성할 수 있게 되었다.

왜 지금인가?

아마 여러분도 알겠듯이, 리그의 새로운 방송권 계약이 이번 년도에 효과를 발휘하게 되고, 리그의 주 수입원들 중 하나가 거의 두배에 달하는 액수가 되었다. 리그의 수입 중 거의 절반에 달하는 액수가 선수들에게 보장되어 있는 상황에서, 증가액의 총량이 콘리를 포함, 2016 프리 에이전트 시장으로 곧장 들어갔다.

리그의 샐러리 캡이 $70 million에서 $94 million를 넘는 액수로 뛰어올랐는데, 이는 34 퍼센트를 넘는 전대미문의 증가치다. 맥시멈 샐러리도 역시 뛰쳐올라 콘리처럼 리그에서 7~9 년을 플레이해 온 선수들은 (지난 시즌의 $19.7 million에서 상승한) 년 당 샐러리 $26.5 million로 시작하는 계약을 할 수 있게 되었다

여기에 콘리에게 달려들 수 있을 만큼의 캡 공간을 만들 수 있는 여건을 가진 팀들이 리그의 3분의 2가 넘게 되었다. 이렇게 됨으로써 그리즐리스 입장에서는 생각하고 말고 할 것이 없었다. 결국 그래서 콘리에게 자신들이 줄 수 있는 가장 큰 스타팅 샐러리에 ($26,540,100) 가장 긴 년도에 (다섯) 가장 큰 연간 인상폭을 (7.5 퍼센트) 주게 되었다.

그리고 또?

$152,605,572에 달하는 콘리의 총액도 상상을 뛰어넘긴 하지만, NBA 역사에서 가장 풍족한 계약이라는 그의 기록이 오래 지속될 가능성은 낮을 듯 싶다.

맥시멈 샐러리라는 것이 10년을 이어 온 선수들에겐 더욱더 높아서, 제때를 맞이한 제격의 선수가 프리 에이전시에 나오기만 한다면 그 선수의 총액은 콘리의 총액을 훌쩍 넘어설 수 있다.

그런데 여기엔 제격의 조건들이 수반되어야 한다. 리그에서 10년 이상을 보낸 선수, 31세를 넘지 말아야 하며 (그렇지 않음 리그의 over-36 규정으로 인해 미래 수익에 제약이 생기게 됨) 소속됐던 팀과 풀 버드 권리를 갖고 재계약해야 한다 (이래야 5년 및 7.5 퍼센트 인상폭을 받을 수 있음). 그리고 앞으로 이런 모든 조각들이 맞아 떨어질 선수들이 몇 있다.

콘리를 따돌릴 가능성이 가장 높은 선수들이 아래의 네 명이다:

Russell Westbrook

James Harden

하든은 지금 2020년까지 가는 계약에 있으며, 2019년에 프리 에이전트가 될 수 있는 플레이어 옵션이 붙어 있다. (웨스트브룩과 마찬가지로, 하든도 재협상후연장 계약의 최근 취득자다.)

만약 2019년에 프리 에이전트가 되어 로켓츠와 재계약한다면 30세의 나이이며 웨스트브룩처럼 $35.8 million로 시작해 총 $206 million에 달하게 된다.

그리고 2020년까지 기다린다면, $37.5 million 전망액으로 시작하여 총 $215.6 million가 되는 액수를 받을 자격이 생긴다.

DeAndre Jordan

이 로스앤젤레스 클리퍼스 센터는 2019년까지 계약되어 있고, 2018년에 프리 에이전트가 될 수 있는 플레이어 옵션이 붙어 있다. 저때에는 30세 및 10년차 베테랑이 되는 때여서 웨브트브룩처럼 $35.5 million 스타팅 샐러리 및 $204.1 million 총액을 받을 자격이 생긴다.

그래도 이것만큼은 확실하다: 조던 입장에서는 자유투로 액수를 매기지 않은 것이 좋다.

이 랩터스의 포인트 가드는 2017년에 플레이어 옵션을 택하여 프리 에이전트가 되면 31세 및 11년차 베테랑이 되어 $33.5 million의 스타팅 샐러리 전망치가 나와 5년 총 $196 million를 받을 자격이 생긴다. 대신 플레이어 옵션을 택하지 않으면 32세가 되는 2018년에 프리 에이전트가 된다. 이렇게 되면 사실상 4년 계약으로 제한될 것이다. 그런데 라우리의 경우, 분명 혹자는 2017년의 풀맥스 계약이 정당성을 갖게 될 것이냐 의문을 품을 수 있다. 지난 시즌 커리어 이어를 보냈는데 이와 비슷한 퍼포먼스 수준을 계속 유지해야 그나마 기회가 생길 것이다.

그런데 설령 랩터스와 라우리가 더 낮은 스타팅 샐러리로 타결한다 해도, 라우리가 $200 million 고지에 닿을 가능성은 없을 지언정 그의 차기 계약이 콘리의 총액을 가뿐히 넘길 가능성은 충분하다. 그렇게 될 경우, 라우리는 NBA역사에서 가장 큰 계약을 차지할 다음 선수가 되게 된다. 다만 웨스트브룩이나 하든이나 조던이 제칠 때까지의 그 기간이 짧긴 하겠지만 말이다.

다음으로 가능성 있는 이들

그러나 현재의 상태로 보면 이 선수들 중 아무도 본인의 프리 에이전시에서 풀맥스 계약을 받을 가능성이 높지가 않다. 실제로 10년차 이상의 선수들이 3년을 초과하여 베테랑 맥시멈 샐러리 이상으로 시작하는 계약이나 연장을 받는 경우는 정말 극소수다. (1999 뒤로) 지금까지 최근의 CBA 세 번에 걸쳐 저런 계약을 받은 이들로는 칼 말론 (1999), 크리스 바쉬 (2014), 카멜로 앤써니 (2014) 뿐이었다. 그나마 근접하기로는 디켐베 무톰보 (2001) 그리고 샤킬 오닐이 (2005) 있었다.

따라서 이렇게 가장 큰 액수에 달할 계약을 받는 선수들이라 함은 선택받은 자들이다. 즉 웨스트브룩과 하든 그리고 어쩌면 조던까지 해서 이들 말고 다음 몇 년 안에 저런 계약에 사인할 가능성은 낮다. 그래도 어째든 이 셋 중 적어도 한 명은 콘리의 기록을 넘어설 가능성이 상당히 높고, 어쩌면 NBA의 첫 200 밀리언 달러 플레이어가 되지 않을까 한다.

Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley now owns the richest contract in NBA history.

But probably not for long.

Who's next to wear the crown of the highest-paid player? And who will be the NBA's first $200 million man? We have nine names from across the league, including the top four candidates.

What does it take to hit the jackpot?

Receiving the largest contract in league history requires being in the right place at the right time -- hitting free agency when you're at or near your peak, when the rules work in your favor and when your production justifies such a lofty paycheck. But even then, earning the biggest contract ever requires extraordinary circumstances.

This year the stars aligned perfectly for Conley, who was drafted by Memphis with the fourth overall pick in 2007 and has played with the same team his entire career. At 28, he hit free agency at the right age to secure a five-year commitment, and hitting free agency in 2016 ensured he would enter the biggest seller's market in league history.

Why now?

As you probably know, the league's new national-television-rights deal took effect this year, effectively doubling the amount the league receives from one of its principal sources of revenue. With approximately half of the league's revenues guaranteed to go to the players, the full force of the increase went directly to the 2016 free-agent market -- including to Conley.

The league's salary cap jumped from $70 million to more than $94 million, an unprecedented increase of more than 34 percent. Maximum salaries jumped, too, with players such as Conley who have seven to nine years in the league eligible to sign for up to a starting yearly salary of $26.5 million (up from $19.7 million last season).

More than two-thirds of the league had the wherewithal to clear enough cap space to make a run at Conley. This made the decision a no-brainer for the Grizzlies, who gave Conley the largest starting salary ($26,540,100), the most years (five) and the largest yearly raises (7.5 percent) they could provide.

What's next?

Conley's total of $152,605,575 may stagger the imagination, but his record for the richest contract in NBA history likely won't stand for long.

The maximum salary is even higher for players with 10 years of service, and should the right player hit free agency at the right time, that player's total could shatter Conley's.

It would require the right circumstances -- a player with at least 10 years in the league, not older than 31 (or the league's over-36 rule would limit his potential earnings) and re-signing with his previous team with full Bird rights (allowing five years and 7.5 percent raises). There are several upcoming players for whom all the pieces could fall into place.

Who's next?

The most likely players to zoom past Conley are these four:

Russell Westbrook
The Thunder just completed a "renegotiate-and-extend" deal with their remaining franchise player, increasing his 2016-17 salary to $26.5 million while extending his contract through 2018-19. The final season has a player option, meaning Westbrook can become a free agent in either 2018 or 2019.

If he becomes a free agent in 2018, he will be 29, likely still in his prime and have exactly 10 years in the league. Should he choose to re-sign with the Thunder, his contract could start at a projected $35.5 million and could total $204.1 million.

If he waits until 2019, he could start at a projected $35.8 million and his contract could total nearly $206 million.

James Harden
Harden is now signed through 2020, with a player option that could make him a free agent in 2019. (Like Westbrook, Harden is a recent recipient of a renegotiate-and-extend deal.)

If he becomes a free agent and re-signs with the Rockets in 2019, he will be 30 and eligible for the same starting $35.8 million and total of $206 million as Westbrook.

If he waits until 2020, he could be eligible for a projected starting salary of $37.5 million on a contract that could total $215.6 million.

DeAndre Jordan
The Los Angeles Clippers center is signed through 2019, with a player option that could make him a free agent in 2018. He will be 30 and a 10-year vet at that time and eligible for the same starting $35.5 million and total of $204.1 million as Westbrook.

If he instead waits until 2019, his contract could also match Westbrook's potential $35.8 million starting salary and $206 million total. Given the Clippers' uncertain timeline, Jordan is less likely than either Westbrook or Harden to re-sign for more than $200 million. Both Chris Paul and Blake Griffin could be gone by the time Jordan becomes a free agent. Or the Clippers could decide to head in another direction, rather than commit one-fifth of a billion dollars of Steve Ballmer's money to Jordan. Or Jordan could decide to ply his trade elsewhere, rather than endure an eventual Clippers rebuild.

This much is clear: For Jordan's sake, it's a good thing they don't pay by the free throw.

Kyle Lowry
The Raptors' point guard will be 31 and an 11-year vet if he takes his player option and becomes a free agent in 2017, making him eligible for a projected starting salary of up to $33.5 million and five-year total of $196 million. If he doesn't take his option he will be 32 when he becomes a free agent in 2018, meaning he effectively will be limited to a four-year contract. But in Lowry's case, one must wonder whether a full-max contract in 2017 will be justified. He had a career year last season and has to maintain a similar level of performance to even have a chance.

Even if the Raptors and Lowry settle on a somewhat lower starting salary, his next contract still has the potential to significantly surpass Conley's total, although Lowry has no chance to eclipse the magic $200 million threshold. As such, Lowry is the next player with the potential to claim the largest contract in NBA history, even if his reign is short-lived until Westbrook, Harden or Jordan pass him.

The next-most likely

Five other players have the potential to hit the $200 million mark the next time they reach free agency.

• Brook Lopez (2018; will be age 30)

• Kevin Love (2019 or 2020; age 30 or 31)

• Nicolas Batum (2020; age 31)

• Evan Turner (2020; age 31)

• DeMar DeRozan (2020 or 2021; age 30 or 31)

But as it stands now, none of these players is likely to command a full-max contract when he hits free agency. In fact, very few players receive contracts or extensions that are longer than three seasons and start at or above the veteran-maximum salary for players with 10 or more years of experience. Over the three most recent collective bargaining agreements (since 1999), only Karl Malone (1999), Chris Bosh (2014) and Carmelo Anthony (2014) have received such deals -- with Dikembe Mutombo (2001) and Shaquille O'Neal (2005) coming close.

So it is a select group of players who receive these largest-possible contracts, meaning it's unlikely anyone other than Westbrook, Harden and perhaps Jordan will sign one over the next few years. Still, it's pretty likely at least one of these three will eclipse Conley's record, and may become the NBA's first $200 million player.
