스위밍 지그

마법의 루어는 없다. 최소한 전문가는 계속하여 이러한 이야기를 한다. 이러한 말에도 불구하고 우리 중 대부분은 “마법의 루어”를 찾고 있으며, 언젠가는 찾게 되기를 기대하고 있다.

이러한 것이 있다면 무엇이며, 어떤 모양일까? 그러나 조건과 장소에 상관 없이 다른 어떤 것보다 훨씬 조과가 좋은 것이 있다면, 그 모양이 어떻든 무슨 상관일까? 나는 상관하지 않을 것이다.

최소한 한 사람, 위스컨신 La Crosse 출신의 프로 앵글러 톰 몬수어(Tom Monsoor)는 이러한 마법의 루어를 찾았다고 생각한다. 실제로는 자신이 만들기도 한다.

이 마법의 루어는 톰의 “스위밍 지그”이다. 그가 무엇인가 큰 발견을 했다는 느낌은 약 20년 전 1980년대 중반부터 시작되었다. 1998년이 되자 몬수어는 자신의 스위밍 지그를 완성시켜 대단한 토너먼트 성적을 올리기 시작했다. 그는 1999-2001 BFL Great Lakes Division에서 AOY가 되었으며, 2001년에는 EverStart Series Northern Division 우승자가 되었다.

톰과 그의 스위밍 지그는 미네소타, 위스컨신, 아이오와, 일리노이즈 등의 북부 지역의 토너먼트에서 두각을 나타냈다.

이에 짖눌린 톰의 경쟁자들은 자신도 지그를 스위밍시키지 않으면 살 길이 없으리라고 생각했다. 토너먼트에서 걸졍한 파트너로 약 50명의 앵글러가 톰의 보트에 탔었다. 이들은 톰이 무엇을 하는지 알고 있었다. 그들은 무슨 방법으로든 톰의 스위밍 지그를 복사하려고 했지만, 몬수어는 자신의 오리지널을 구명조끼에 넣고 다녔다.

2002년 몬수어는 전국적인 프로 수준으로 올라섰으며, 2002년 이후로는 북부 지역에서 그리 열심히 낚시하지 않았다. 스트레스는 줄었지만 그가 북부의 친구들에게 남긴 교훈은 잊혀지지 않았다.

Today, it seems as if there isn't anyone fishing a tournament in the area of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois who doesn't have one, or more like a couple dozen swimming jigs in his bag, and there are about ten companies (mostly in this same Northern region) that have started to make swimming jigs within the past few years. It's not entirely wrong to say their aim is to be about as close as possible to emulate Tom's swimming jigs, and every time a crony flashes a new swimming jig past a Northern angler's eyes, the question and the hope always arises, "Is this Tom's?"

The experts keep telling us there's no such thing as a magic lure. Still, we can dream, can't we?

To wrap it up, here's Tom's comments on seeking perfection in a lure.

"My swimming jig is at its best as a shallow water weed and wood lure. These are the choicest types of spots that fish favor on any body of water, and practically every anglers knows that. I am convinced these shallow fish in prime spots know all about anglers, boats and baits. They get peppered with lures, have gone through catch and release. They've learned to bypass the bad presentations and turn down the less-than-perfect swimming jigs. On the other hand, the deeper you fish, the more hook-ups you will get even with a less than perfect lure or presentation. Fish are dumber deeper. Find fish deep, and they don't see a lot of lures down there. You don't always need the perfect lure to get fish down deep."
