웨슬리의 회심과 사역

(계 3:20-22, 쉬운) [20] 보아라! 내가 문 앞에 서서 이렇게 두드리고 있다. 만일 누구든지 내 음성을 듣고 문을 열면, 내가 그에게로 들어가 그와 함께 먹고, 그도 나와 함께 먹을 것이다. [21] 내가 승리한 후, 내 아버지의 보좌 곁에 앉은 것처럼, 승리하는 자는 내 보좌 곁에 앉게 될 것이다. [22] 귀 있는 자는 성령께서 교회에 하시는 말씀을 잘 들어라.’”

올해(2014년)는 요한 웨슬리 목사님(John Wesley, 영국 1703-1791)이 회심한지 276주년이 되는 해입니다.

요한 웨슬리 목사는 감리교의 창시자로써 평생에 25만 마일을 여행하면서 (40만 킬로미터, 서울부산 930번) 매일 5차례씩 일 년에 2천 번의 설교를 했습니다.

그것을 40년 간 꾸준히 그렇게 했습니다.

그러면서 200권의 저서를 남기고, 10개 국어를 구사했으며,

82세 때도 수백명의 휘하 설교자와 수십만의 조직이 있었지만

직접 구제금을 걷으러 다녔습니다.

그리고 83세가 되어서도 매일 15시간씩 글을 썼습니다.

86세 때는 힘이 없어 하루에 두 번 정도밖에

설교할 수 없음을 두고 부끄러워했습니다.

또한 나이 때문에 5시 30분에 일어났는데 이를 두고 그는 일기장에

'5시 30분까지 누워 있는 게으른 죄를 자복합니다.' 라고 적고 있습니다.

요한 웨슬리 목사님의 자신의 일도 엄청나지만

그가 미친 영향력은 영국을 넘어서 전 세계에 퍼졌습니다.

한 예로 요한 웨슬리 목사님의 설교와 가르침으로 인한 노예해방은

영국하원의원인 윌버포스(William Wilberforce, 1759-1833)의 주도로

이루어졌습니다.

그러나 그 배후에는 요한 웨슬리가 있었습니다.

윌버포스는 1791년에 노예제도 폐지를 위한 법안을 하원에 상정했는데,

이러한 윌버포스의 활동에 대한 기득권층들로부터의

위협과 반발은 엄청났습니다.

바로 이해에 웨슬리는 세상을 떠나는데

임종의 자리에서도 떨리는 손으로 윌버포스에게

노예해방운동을 위한 격려의 편지를 보냅니다.

이것이 윌버포스에게 천군만마의 응원군이나 다름이 없었다고

역사가들은 말합니다.

또한 웨슬리 목사님이 돌아가신 후에도 노예제도폐지를 후원하며 윌버포스를 보호하는 수많은 감리교인과 요한 웨슬리 목사의 감리교도들이 있어서 결국 이 일이 이루어질 수 있었습니다.

결국 노예해방 법령은

1834년 8월 1일을 기하여 대영제국 전체에 발효되었는데,

이에 대해 역사가 브레디는 다음과 같이 묘사하고 있습니다.

"7월 31일 밤에 식민지 전 지역에서는 성공회 교회와

비국교도들의 교회당의 문들이 모두 열려졌고,

노예들이 그 안으로 몰려들어 대만원을 이루었다.

자정이 다가오자 그들은 무릎을 꿇고 그 장엄한 순간을 기다리며

조용히 기도를 드렸다.

교회당의 시계가 12시를 알리는 첫 종소리를 울리자

그들은 뛰쳐 일어나 쇠사슬이 벗겨지고 노예에서 해방되었음을

하나님께 감사드리는 기쁨의 함성을 울려 댔다.

커플란드(Reginald Coupland)는 말하길,

1834년 7월 31일 밤 12시 정각을 기하여

약 800,000 명의 흑인 노예들이 자유를 얻게 되었다.

그것은 아프리카나 영국 역사상의 한 중요한 사건 이상의 일이었다.

그것은 전 세계 역사상 가장 중대한 사건이었다고 했다."

그래서 영국수상 스탠리 볼드윈(1867-1947)은

“요한 웨슬리는 파선한 18세기 영국을 구하는

유일한 배역을 맡았던 영국인이다”라고 말했습니다.

이러한 위대한 인물인 요한 웨슬리 목사도

처음에는 아무런 영향력이 없는 평범한 인물에 불과했습니다.

그는 1725년 22세때 생애에 큰 전환기를 맞게 됩니다.

성직의 길을 걷기로 결심한 것입니다.

하지만 힘이 없었습니다.

나중에 이때를 생각하며 쓴 일기를 보면

“나는 아직 내 마음의 성결에 대한 관념조차 갖지 못하였다.

나의 종교 생활은 다만 습관에 지나지 않았고

명백한 죄를 범하면서도 뉘우치는 마음이 없었으며 도리어 그 죄에 만족하였다.”

1728년 25세 때 목사안수를 받았고 가끔씩 설교를 했습니다.

하지만 그의 설교는 힘이 없었습니다.

당시 설교에 대해 그는 다음과 같이 술회했습니다.

1725년부터 2년 동안 나의 설교는 실패였습니다.

내 설교에는 힘이 없었고 감화력이 없었습니다.

1735년 32세때는 미국 조지아 주에 선교사로 갑니다.

하지만 역시 영적인 힘이 없었습니다.

“내가 선교사로 가는 동기는 나 자신의 영혼을 구하려 함이며

나는 복음을 전함으로 복음의 진의를 깨닫기 바란다.”

고 말했습니다.

여기서도 2년 반동안 쉬지 않고 엄청나게 일을 하였습니다.

새벽기도회(5시), 주간학교, 성찬식, 설교, 프랑스인 예배, 교리문답, 기도회,

모라비안 교회참석, 이탈리아인 예배, 전도, 성가집 발간. 등등

그러나 마침내 말한 고백은 이것입니다.

“나는 아메리카인을 회개시키고자 미국에 갔으나

이 불신앙의 죄악된 마음에서 나를 건질 자는 누구인가?

나의 행동과 수고와 의로써는 도저히 하나님으로 더불어 화목할 수 없다.

예수님과 그의 영이 인도하시는 삶을 살고 싶다.”

라는 절망적인 고백을 하였습니다.

기독교는 은혜의 종교입니다.

모든 것이 하나님의 은혜입니다.

내게 복음이 전해진 것도 하나님의 은혜요.

내가 복음을 깨닫는 것도 하나님의 은혜요.

내가 믿음으로 복음을 받아들이게 된 것도 하나님의 은혜입니다.

그런데 요한 웨슬리는 지금까지 열심히 쉬지않고 부지런히 노력하므로

하나님께 가까이 나아가려고 하였습니다.

그러니 실패할 수 밖에 없었던 것입니다.

성경은 말하기를

(롬 3:20, 28, 개정) [20] 그러므로 율법의 행위로 그의 앞에 의롭다 하심을 얻을 육체가 없나니 율법으로는 죄를 깨달음이니라 [28] 그러므로 사람이 의롭다 하심을 얻는 것은 율법의 행위에 있지 않고 믿음으로 되는 줄 우리가 인정하노라

인도의 힌두교, 아랍의 이슬람교, 중국의 유교, 그리고 불교도

선행을 쌓아 진리에 이르려하지만 결국 그 길은 실패로 끝나고 맙니다.

(엡 2:8-9, 쉬운) [8] 여러분은 하나님의 은혜 안에서 믿음으로 구원을 받았습니다. 여러분 스스로는 자신을 구원할 수 없습니다. 구원은 하나님의 선물입니다. [9] 또한 여러분의 착한 행동으로도 구원받았다고 자랑할 수 없습니다.

그런가하면 혹은 고행을 통해 자기를 학대함으로써 구원에 이르고자합니다.

특별히 힌두교가 이런 면에서 유명합니다.

인도의 힌두교도들은 수많은 고행을 통해 구원을 얻으려고 노력합니다.

불에 달군 인두로 어깨, 가슴, 그리고 사타구니를 지져서

낙인을 만드는 낙인고행을 하는데

이러한 낙인은 인도의 신앙사회에 있어 훈장같은 것으로

하나보다 두개가 영예롭고 두개보다 열개가 더 영예로운 것입니다.

그런가하면 붉게 타오르는 숯 위를 걷는 고행도 있는데

이 고행은 6미터 길이로 숯불을 피워놓고 맨발로 걸어가는데

쇠접시에 숯불을 담아 머리에 이고 걸으면 고행의 가치가 더 오릅니다.

이보다 더 끔찍한 고행이 있는데

마리아마 여신을 섬기는 광신도들이 사원의 정문 대들보에

대저울 낚시같은 날카로운 후크가 달린 로프가 걸어놓고서

이 후크를 뒷덜미나 엉덩이 또는 등살의 좋은 곳을 골라 무자비하게 뀁니다.

이렇게 낚인 고행자를 도르레로 대들보에 끌어올려 공중에 뜨게 합니다.

이때 이 고행을 보는 사람은 환호성을 올리며 웃습니다.

피투성이 고행자는 그 고행시간을 길게 할수록

마리아마 여신으로부터 축복을 받는 것으로 알고 있습니다.

사원의 흙바닥을 뒹굴고 다니는 고행자가 가장 흔하였고

손수레 밑으로 깔리는 고행터도 따로 마련되어 있습니다.

그런가하면 사원의 32키로미터 밖에서부터

턱으로 기어들어오는 고행풍습도 있어 턱은 피투성이가 됩니다.

그리고 그 턱을 땅에 댄채 이렛동안 물만마시고 고행하는 것도 있습니다.

고행은 각기 사원에서 아이디어를 내어 승정회의에서

그 특허권을 인정받기만하면 시행되기 때문에

계속해서 새로운 고행법이 많이 탄생하고 있다고 합니다.

이러한 선행이나 고행은 자기 만족만 줄뿐이지

이러한 노력으로 구원에 이를 수는 없는 것입니다.

그래서 성경은 말씀하시기를

(롬 3:24, 개정) 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 속량으로 말미암아 하나님의 은혜로 값 없이 의롭다 하심을 얻은 자 되었느니라

이같은 성경의 진리를 읽었지만 믿지 못하였던 웨슬리 목사는

자기의 선행과 노력으로 구원을 얻기 위해 애썼습니다.

그러다 결국 실패하여 모든 것에 지치고 낙심하며 자포자기하기에 이르렀습니다.

그리고 1738년 5월 24일 런던의 올더스 케이트 거리에 있는

모라비아 교도의 모임에서 로마서 주석서문을 듣던 중 마음이 뜨거워졌습니다.

그날 웨슬리는 자기의 일기에 이일을 이렇게 적었습니다.

“9시가 되기 15분전쯤 낭독자가

하나님께서 예수님을 믿는 믿음을 통하여

사람을 변화시키는 일을 하신다는 말을 하는 순간,

나는 이상한 뜨거움을 느꼈다.

그 순간 나는 나의 구원을 위하여

오직 예수 그리스도만을 의지해야한다는 사실과

예수께서 나의 모든 죄를 맡으시고

나를 죄와 죽음가운데서 건져내신다는 사실을 굳게 믿게 되었다.“

라고 고백하고 있습니다.

그리고 이어 그해 12월에는 성령체험을 합니다.

1739 Mon. JANUARY 1, (웨슬레의 성령체험)

홀 씨와 킨친 씨, 잉함 씨, 휫 필드 씨, 허친스 씨, 그리고 내 동생 찰스는 페터 레인(Fetter-Lane)에서 60명 의 성도들과 함께 애찬식을 갖었습니다. 그리고 이어 새벽 세시까지 계속적으로 기도하였는데 갑자기 하나님의 능력이 우리 위에 강하게 임하셨습니다. 이 때 많은 성도들은 넘쳐나는 기쁨을 맛보며 소리 높여 외쳤고 다른 이들은 바닥에 쓰러졌습니다. 우리는 이러한 하나님의 임재하심으로 인한 놀라움과 두려움으로부터 얼마간 회복된 후 한 목소리로 “하나님 당신을 찬양합니다. 우리는 당신이 주님이심을 고백합니다.”

성령체험은 성도의 구원에 확신을 주어 흔들리지 않게 합니다.

(엡 1:13, 개정) 그 안에서 너희도 진리의 말씀 곧 너희의 구원의 복음을 듣고 그 안에서 또한 믿어 약속의 성령으로 인치심을 받았으니

(롬 8:16, 개정) 성령이 친히 우리의 영과 더불어 우리가 하나님의 자녀인 것을 증언하시나니

이러한 회심과 성령체험 후 요한 웨슬리는

조지 휫필드의 요청으로 야외에서 복음을 전하게 됩니다.

맨 처음에는 자신의 내성적인 성격적 이유로 망설였으나

용기를 내어 나가서 말씀을 전할 때 하나님의 능력이 함께 하셨습니다.

병든 말에게 손을 대어 기도할 때 건강하게 치료되었고

탄광촌에서는 깡패집단을 회개시켰으며

지나가는 마을마다 술집이 문을 닫는 역사가 일어났습니다.

(요 15:4-5, 개역) 『[4] 내 안에 거하라 나도 너희 안에 거하리라 가지가 포도나무에 붙어 있지 아니하면 절로 과실을 맺을 수 없음 같이 너희도 내 안에 있지 아니하면 그러하리라 [5] 나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지니 저가 내 안에, 내가 저 안에 있으면 이 사람은 과실을 많이 맺나니 나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무 것도 할 수 없음이라』

예수님 없이는 능력도 없습니다.

은혜는 사모하는 자에게 주십니다.

기도함으로 예수님안에 단단히 붙어있으십시오.

웨슬리 목사님에게 임했던 성령의 권능이

저와 여러분, 우리 교회의 모든 성도위에 충만하기를 원합니다.

The conversion and ministry of John Wesley

(Revelation 3:20-22, NIV) [20] Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. [21] To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. [22] He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

This year (2014) is the 276th anniversary of the conversion of Rev. John Wesley (1703-1791). John Wesley was the founder of Methodist. He traveled 400,000 Km in his life time for mission. He preached 5 times each day. He preached 2,000 times in a year for 40 years. He wrote 200 books. He could speak 10 languages. Although he had several hundreds of pastors and several hundreds of thousands of people in his organization, when he was 82 years old, he went out for collection of contributions.

When he was 83years, he wrote 15 hours per day. In his age 86, he shamed himself that he could preach only 2 times per day because of lack of physical power. And, he got up 5:30 in the morning because of old age. About this, he wrote in his diary, "I confess my sin of laziness that I laid down until 5:30."

John Wesley not only achieved a lot of things in his own ministry, but also he influenced a lot England and other countries. For an example, because of the preach and sermon of John Wesley, a Member of Parliament of England, William Wilberforce (1759-1833) led the movement for emancipation of slaves. Behind the movement, there was Rev. John Wesley.

In 1791, Wilberforce laid a bill for emancipation of slaves before the National Assembly. Then, those who had the vested rights threatened and resisted against Wilberforce and his law. In this very year, 1791, John Wesley passed away. However, while he was in his death-bed, John Wesley wrote letters of encouragement to Wilberforce about the movement for emancipation of slaves. Many historians are saying that these letters might be the reinforcement like thousands of troops and horses.

And, even though after John Wesley passed away, because of numerous methodists who supported and protected Wliberforce, he could accomplish the mission.

Finally, the emancipation proclamation became active on August 1st 1834 all over the England. About this historical event, historian Bready described it like this.

"At night on July 31st 1834, all the gates of Anglican Churches and nonconformist Churches were opened and all the slaves came to the sanctuaries and made crowd. About the midnight, they kneeled down and waited the historical moment and prayed silently. When the clock of the church alarmed the 12 o'clock, they got up and shouted the joyful and thankful voice before God that they were freed from the slavery.

Reginald Coupland, the historian, later described the moment at midnight on 31st July 1834, when 800,000 slaves became free, as "one of the greatest events in Africa and England. It was also a historical event in the world.

And so England's Prime Minister, Stanly Baldwin(1867-1947) said, "John Wesley was the only Englishman who helped save the shipwrecked England of the 18th century."

Even this great man, Pastor John Wesley, at first began as an ordinary man without any influence. In 1725, at the age of 22, he meets a great turning point in life. He decided to become a minister. But he had no power. Later he wrote about this time in his journal, "I did not even have a concept of holiness in my heart at the time. My religious life was only a habit, and though I clearly committed sin, I had no repentance in my heart, and rather enjoyed it."

He was ordained as a pastor at 25 and sometimes preached. But there was no power in his sermons. He said about his sermons at the time, "From 1725 and two years on, my sermons were failures. There was no power and no movement in my sermons."

In 1735, at the age of 32, he went to Georgia, America, as a missionary. But he still had no spiritual power. He said, "The reason I am going as a missionary is to save my own soul, and I hope to realize the truth of the gospel by sharing the gospel."

Here, again he worked without rest for 2 and a half years. He served the early morning service(5am), Sunday School, the Holy Communions, sermons, the french services, catechism, prayer meetings, Moravian services, Italian services, evangelism, and choir books. But in the end, he confessed, "I went to America to convert the Americans, but who will save me from this sinful heart of faithlessness? I cannot be at peace with God with my actions and efforts and righteousness. I want to live a life that is led by Christ and his spirit."

Christianity is a religion of grace. Everything is God's grace. Having heard the gospel is God's grace. Having realized the gospel is God's grace. And having received the gospel with faith is also done by God's grace. But John Wesley did not rest and worked hard to go closer to God. And so he couldn't help but fail.

The bible says,

(Romans 3:20, 28, NIV) [20] Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. [28] For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

India's Hinduism, the Arabians' Islam, China's Confucianism, and Buddhism all have tried to reach the truth through good works, but all of these roads end in ruin.

(Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV) [8] For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- [9] not by works, so that no one can boast.

And then, there are others who torture theirselves to reach salvation. The Hindu are especially famous for the practice of self harming. Many people who believe this religion go through many ascetic practices. A lot of people use the branding iron, heating it with fire and burn theirselves on their shoulders, chest, and their thighs. The scars that are made through this religious practice is considered like a medal, and the more you have it, the more glorious it is. On the other hand, there is a ascetic practice where you walk on burning coal. There is a path with the length of 6 meters of burning coal, and people have to walk across it with bare feet. If you do this with a steel plate holding burning coal, it is considered more valuable.

There are more terrible methods than these. The people who serve the goddess Mariama have a courtyard with sharp hooks on ropes, so it looks like a giant scale. These hooks are pierced through the flesh, in the back of the neck, butt, back, or anyplace that can be hooked easily. The people who have been hooked are raised up with a reel onto a girder midair. The people who watch this cheer on and smile. And it is believed that people who hang longer receive more blessings from the goddess.

The ascetic practice of rolling around in the dirt from the temple's floors was the most common, and there was also the method of being run over with a wheelbarrow, there was also a method of crawling all the way to the temple from 32 kilometers away with one's chin, and drinking water for 7 days while placing one's chin on the ground. These practices are all different by temple, and a grand council reviews each temple's religious methods and grant a copyright to their own methods, and if they receive one, they can put the practice into action, so many new painful practices are being made everyday. But these methods can only give satisfaction or relief to one, they cannot bring a person to salvation. The bible tells us,

(Rm 3:24, NIV) and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Like this, pastor Wesley read the truth of the bible, but could not believe it. He worked hard to receive salvation through his own good deeds and efforts. He later failed, was sick and tired of everything and gave up on everything. And on 1738 may 24th, he went to a society in Aldersgate street in London. His heart grew hot as he was listening to the Epistle to the Romans, read by a gathering of Morabians.

On that day Wesley writes what happened to him on that day in his diary, and confessed,

"In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate-Street, where one was reading Luther‘s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation: And an assurance was given me, that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."

And he meets the Holy Spirit again in December.

"1739 Mon. JANUARY 1,

Mr. Hall, Kinchin, Ingham, Whitefield, Hatchins, and my brother Charles, were present at our love-feast in Fetter-Lane, with about sixty of our brethren. About three in the morning, as we were continuing constant in prayer, the power of God came mightily upon us, in so much that many cried out for exceeding joy, and many fell to the ground. As soon as we were recovered a little from that awe and amazement at the presence of his Majesty, we broke out with one voice, we praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord."

People who have experienced the Holy Spirit have confidence in salvation, and do not shake.

(Eph 1:13, NIV) And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,

(Rm 8:16, NIV) The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

Wesley, who had experienced this complacency started spreading the gospel outside because of George Whitefield's request. At first, Wesley hesitated because of his quiet personality, but when he courageously stepped out to spread the gospel, the power of the Lord went with him. When he put his hand on a sick horse and prayed, it got better, he made a gang from a miner's village repent. Power went with him wherever he went, so that every bar or pub he passed by closed.

(John 15:4-5, NIV) [4] Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. [5] "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

There is no power without Jesus, and grace is given to those who seek it. I want you to be held tightly inside Jesus with prayer. I want the power of the Holy Spirit that was with pastor Wesley to be with everyone, myself, and upon the entire congregation.
