A standard called ‘generality’ for the majority

June. 07. 2017
My family was a very ordinary family before I entered middle school Grade 3. During summer, when I was middle school grade 3, one member of my family bacame a person who belongs to a social minority. I still can’t forget the shock when I learned this. What I can only remember is, one missionary of my school told me this unbelievably tragic news while I was in social studies class. And without hesitation, I packed a few of my clothes, and I got on a flight to Korea. I couldn’t accept my reality, and I couldn’t even feel emotion about anything. Then after I arrvied Korea and saw that my mother was really an uncounscious critical patien, suddenly a number of the disabled people I met came across my mind. Too many confusing thoughts crowded in on me: such as the reactions, behaviors, and gossip of people when they meet a disabled person. Then I seriously thought about ‘social minorities’ after coming back to the Philippines.
I had met a number of minorities while I was staying in the Philippines for 3 years. The Phillippines is a country which has a totally different view of left and right. For instance, on the left side, there are light flashing casinos, luxurious taxis, and high-rise buildings, but on the right side, there are villages where disabled people or young children live in shabby houses made with rice bags, and not even jeepneys exist. Only one road lies between these two different villages. I saw there that the people who have lower social status were distinguished from the people with higher social class in many situations. There are also blind, lame, or disabled people who are not able to get medical treatment due to poverty. I also saw many gay people when I went to the nearby hair shop builiding where low-income people in the Phillippines go. However, unlike South Korea where I live, there was no discrimination towards gay people. These experiences made me think about social minorities in many different ways.
In my experience, I attended a Christian school (though I wasn’t a Christian) from Grade 7 to Grade 10. Before I went on a medical mission tripㅡI went to the medical mission for poor class and disabled people after I enter the schoolㅡI had strong sense of the differences for people who are lower class or disabled. My strong feelings about those people were eliminated after many of missions trips, though, I still firmly excluded sexual minorities due to my religious upbringing and stereotyping. Moreover, I even hated the existence of those people because I didn’t try to accept and understand them.
This is the reason why I have been agonizing about social inequality, minorities, and problems of discrimination. I have thought about possible solutions for these matters as a kind of self-reflection and atonement for my past deeds. I have also deeply thought about social irony towards minoritiesㅡgovernement always say they put effort for all members of citizens to live happily, but in fact, policies for minorities are insufficientㅡ, civic consciousness, and also about who I am. I have asked myself about my past deeds. Where did the streotype I had come from? Why didn’t I question them? What can I do for minorities, and what can I do to change this world filled with irony? Can I be forgiven? And still, I agonize and suffer because of these questions.
Why do people not accept of understand diversity? As of 2017 7.49 billion of people are living on this planet and all of them cannot be the same. They all have different features and characteristics, and most of them know that they are different from others. They why do problems with minorities occur? This is quite ironic. The word ‘minority’ is especially ironic. Minority, as written in Chinese characters 少數者, less 少, count 數, person 者. When we look at the word in this language, it means a lower number of people. In this society, however, the word ‘minority’ is being used to discriminate against specific groups. As I mentioned before, there are no two people who are the same. Thus, if people accept and understand their “difference”, there may not even be the notion of the word ‘minority’.
For example, let’s say I introduce myself as “Se Yeon Lee, a girl, 19 years odl, belonging to LGBTAIQ (means sexual minority)”. Contemporary society, where people do not understand difference and diversity, would say “Se Yeon Lee is a part of a sexual minority”. However, a society with understanding about diversity would say “Se Yeon Lee is Se Yeon Lee herself”. In the latter society, a person would be introduced as himself/herself, not as belonging to a social class.
Many people do not agree with this idea. They set up a general standard, and by that standard they discriminate agaist minoities. This is how many the people treat minorities. Even family of minorities go as far as exclude minorities.
Mant kinds of discrimination exist in the world, such as racism, classism, and sexual prejudice, all of which are based on the standard of ‘generality’.
I criticize the society that labels one’s unique identity and personality as ‘abnormal’ and wrongly punishes them with discrimination. I am pained that this still exists in our society, Furthermore, I regret that I was not more respectful in treating others. The pain that I might have caused others helps me empathize with them. To change this contradictory world, policies and social movements to change civic consciousness are required. This can be achived when at least one citizen stands up and fights for equality. And I would like to be that person.
