Unit 752 ■ <Tell Me! Tell Me!> Dictation
***************************************************************************
Serina: Hello everyone, 안녕하세요and welcome to Tell Me Tell Me. I’m Serina Hwang. So, today’s question is, “Have you ever had the power shut down at your home?” Well for me, in our house we normally cook Korean food and I think when it comes to Korean dishes, you don’t really need to use the oven very often, so one day I decided to make some chicken or roast some chicken in the oven, and I was heating it up and then all of the sudden the power went out completely in my house. So I had to go to the fuse box and reset it again. All right, let’s talk to someone else and see if their power ever went out in their home. Let’s go.
Serina: All right, we’re here with Robin and Nancy from the United States. Today’s Tell Me Tell Me question is, “Have you ever had the power shut down at your home?”
Nancy: Yes, we have. Sometimes it lasts for two, three days. And we pretend like we’re camping and have candles and have a picnic in the living room.
Serina: That’s nice. So, you make the whole event fun.
Nancy: Right.
Serina: Okay. Why did that… why did the power outage happen?
Robin: Well sometimes weather. That’s probably the biggest problem. Trees falling down. We have some really large fir trees and pine trees in the northwest. They’ll hit the power lines and take out the transformers. And freezing rain accumulating on the wires, it takes the power out. Usually, though within 24 hours the power is restored.
Serina: Okay.
Robin: So it’s more of an inconvenience. You know you have the flashlights and you have food usually. You just make it an adventure.
Serina: That’s nice. So, I guess usually you have these power outages because of weather conditions. But also sometimes because of faulty appliances you can get power outages as well. Have you ever had that?
Robin: Yes. We had to rewire our house a couple of years ago because we had some incomplete wiring and so our fuses would trip sometimes if we were using too many appliances. Like, if we were using the range, oven range plus the microwave, sometimes that would trip the circuit breakers, but we resolved that by getting some new wiring.
Serina: Have you ever had to reset your fuse box before?
Nancy: Yes.
Robin: Yes.
Nancy: Many times.
Serina: Many times?
Nancy: We know exactly what to do when the things go all black. Let’s go reset the fuse box.
Robin: But since we had the new rewiring a couple of years ago, we haven’t really had that problem.
Serina: Have you ever had a problem where it got so bad that you had to call a technician?
Nancy: Yes.
Robin: Yes, we did a couple of years ago.
Serina: What did the technician do?
Robin: Well, they put in a new fuse box. And actually they put in some more wiring, additional wiring. So we didn’t have to trip the wiring, the fuse box after that.
Serina: Now, what do you think are some ways to prevent electricity (outages)? Because sometimes, like you said, you use too many appliances at once and then all of the sudden you could just, you know, you get a blackout, right? How about you guys? How do you save electricity, to avoid that from happening?
Robin: Well, I don’t know about saving electricity to avoid that problem, but since we’ve had the new wiring and the new fuse box, that, we don’t really have that problem anymore.
Nancy: But before that we made sure that the living room lights were off before we could turn on the microwave oven.
Serina: All right, so thanks to rewiring their home, both Nancy and Robin were able to fix this problem in their home. All right, back to you guys in the studio. I’ll talk to you next time. Bye.
