Revelation 2:1~7 - To the Church in Ephesus, perseverance but you have forsaken your first love
Revelation 2:1~7 – Background and Meaning of Christian Historical Perspectives (AD 27~100, the Age of Apostolic Church)
○ From the point of view of Christian history, it was the period from the death of Jesus until the death of John, the last of the 12 disciples, namely, the period from AD 27 to 100, and it referred to the Apostolic church of the Apostolic Age of the Early Church, in which the apostles directly run the churches. This means the church in Ephesus was the state of purity as the first church of the early Christianity or the early Christian church.
○ The church in Ephesus was at first with purity, passion, and hot love, and disciples such as the Apostle Paul and the Apostle John were alive, so they listened to sermons directly from them, so they could protect themselves from all kinds of errors and false teachings or false lessons.
○ It means that it started as the early Apostolic Church, but the original intention and purity and love at the beginning disappeared as time went by.
○ You can find both external and internal factors why they have forsaken their first love.
(1) External factors - However, due to persecutions of the Roman Empire such as: in AD 68, the Apostle Paul(AD 5~68) was beheaded in Rome at the age of 64 during the reign of Nero (reign AD 37~68), and in AD 70, the city of Jerusalem and the temple of Jerusalem were completely destroyed, and in AD 80, Timothy was stoned by the mob and martyred, and the Apostle John(AD 6~100) was exiled to the island of Patmos in AD 95, therefore, the purity, the passion, and the first-hot love and faithfulness has cooled down.
(2) Internal factors - It was not long after Christianity appeared, so the doctrine was not clearly established, and in addition, as soon as the apostles were absent, such as the martyrdom of Paul and Timothy and the exile of John to the island of Patmos, false doctrines such as various heresies (Heretic Theologies) and the Nicolaitans (Nicholaism) of 'spirit-body dualism’ and false apostles flooded in like waves. Therefore, the church in Ephesus needed a clear head to test them and discern the false doctrines and apostles. As a result, they did not tolerate the wicked, false doctrines, and false apostles, but the mistrust prevailed between believers due to the fight between doctrines, and this disbelief resulted in cooling of mutual love between believers.
