내가 애써 궁리한 끝에 거울을 하나 얻었는데 놀랍고 신기했다. 그 거울 앞에 서면 영혼 상태를 비추어 주는 것이다. 착한 사람의 얼굴은 꽃이나 천사로 보인다. 그래서 ‘내 얼굴은 사랑의 하트 모양으로 보이겠지.’ 하고 들여다보았다가 깜짝 놀랐다. 뿔이 달린 마귀가 나타난 것이다. 사제로서 열심히 살았고 지금도 성령의 보살핌 속에 있다고 여기며 사는데 내 영혼이 악령에 잡혀 있다니, 너무 놀랍고 슬펐다.
용기를 내어 그 뿔을 잡아 올렸더니 온갖 것들이 주렁주렁 달려 나왔다. 명문 학위와 전문가 자격증, 큰 승용차와 고급 음식과 최신 전자 제품, 명품 의상과 가방, 유명 클럽의 회원권, 저택의 화려한 거실과 아무리 꺼내 써도 마르지 않는 투자 통장 등 셀 수도 없었다. 문명의 이기와 귀한 자격증을 얻고자 모두들 그토록 투쟁하는데 어떻게 그것이 악령의 것이란 말인가?
가만히 생각해 보니 악령은 지금까지 나로 하여금 돌로 빵을 만드는 기술과 보란 듯 뛰어내리는 위용과 황제의 감동과 편리하고 호사스러운 생활을 선망의 대상, 이른바 ‘로망’으로 삼게 했다. 가난한 이들과 놀면 품위가 없으니 부자 편에 붙으라고 했다. 사람들은 왜 시장에서 10만 원이면 살 수 있는 가방을 명품이랍시고 5백만 원을 결제하였는지, 왜 사랑하는 자녀들을 원형 경기장의 검투사로 내몰아 악령의 자발적 노예로 살아가게 만들려 하는지를 알고 있을까?
나는 예수님의 제자로서 복음의 거울을 들고 악령을 색출해 추방하는 구마사로 살기로 했다. 그 거울은 선망의 대상들이 악령의 주술에 말미암은 것임을 알게 해 줄 것이다. 왜 예수님께서 제자들에게 ‘악령을 제어하는 능력’을 주시어 파견하셨는지를 깨우칠 것이다. 나는 누구인지 분명한 자의식이 필요하다. 그대는 예수님의 제자인가?

오늘 독서에서는 히브리인들에게 예수님께서 새 율법을 반포하신 새 언약의 모세임을 주지시킵니다. “여러분이 나아간 곳은 시온 산이고 살아 계신 하느님의 도성이며 천상 예루살렘으로, 하느님께서 계시고, 새 계약의 중개자 예수님께서 계십니다”(제1독서). 예수님께서는 열두 제자에게 더러운 영들에 대한 권한을 주시며 둘씩 짝지어 파견하셨습니다. 제자들이 떠나가서 회개하라고 선포하며, 마귀들을 쫓아내고 병자들을 낫게 하는 사명을 수행케 하신 것입니다(복음).

아가타 성녀는 이탈리아 남부의 시칠리아 섬에서 태어났습니다. 어린 시절부터 신심이 깊었던 그녀는 하느님께 자신을 온전히 봉헌하고자 평생을 동정으로 살았습니다. 아가타는 철저하게 동정을 지킨 나머지 그녀를 차지하려던 지방 관리에게 혹독한 고문을 받고 데키우스 황제의 박해 기간(249-251년)에 순교하였습니다. 성녀에 대한 공경은 초대 교회 때부터 널리 전파되었습니다.

Brothers and sisters:
You have not approached that which could be touched
and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness
and storm and a trumpet blast
and a voice speaking words such that those who heard
begged that no message be further addressed to them.
Indeed, so fearful was the spectacle that Moses said,
“I am terrified and trembling.”
No, you have approached Mount Zion
and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,
and countless angels in festal gathering,
and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven,
and God the judge of all,
and the spirits of the just made perfect,
and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,
and the sprinkled Blood that speaks more eloquently
than that of Abel.

Gospel Mk 6:7-13

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two
and gave them authority over unclean spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick
–no food, no sack, no money in their belts.
They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.
He said to them,
“Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet
in testimony against them.”
So they went off and preached repentance.
The Twelve drove out many demons,
and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
