Yana Gupta hails from Czechoslovakia. She came to India on a tour, fell in love with a Pune based artist, got married and stayed on. A former ramp model, Yana quickly became Lakme's new face after moving to Mumbai. After featuring in several print and TV commercials and music videos [including the very hot Jalwa 2],and the recent DUM movie, Yana Gupta is young, hot, sexy and going places.

 

I enjoy doing item numbers: Yana Gupta Don’t believe what the newspapers say,” warns Yana Gupta as soon as she meets me for this interview. The Babuji bombshell is referring to an interview which said she wants to hit the 100-mark in item numbers. “That is such rubbish,” she says angrily. “Honestly, where do these stories come from? They say I wanted to be in the Guinness Book of Records as the girl who has done the maximum number of item numbers. Is that some kind of an achievement? Will people actually watch me doing item numbers 100 times over? Please, I don’t think I’m that good. I’ll probably be 60 years old by the time I finish doing a 100 item numbers! I still can’t believe someone could write that.” She recalls that the Babuji item number in the movie Dum came to her quite by chance and since she likes the work of choreographer Ganesh Hegde, she agreed to do it without a thought. “To me it was just like a music video,” she shrugs, “and I enjoyed doing it. You know, I’m quite amused that they refer to me as an actress because I danced in an item number! But it was a nice compliment!” We hear Subhash Ghai approached her to be the heroine for his film, then titled Motherland. Yana confirm‎s, “I admit I met Mr Ghai out of sheer curiosity. I didn’t really know which project he wanted me for. He was one of the first persons to approach me. But I never really considered his offer seriously because I don’t have any great desire to be a heroine.” Yana doesn’t rule out the possibility of turning heroine though. “It may happen to me some day,” she admits. “But as of now I’m quite happy with my modeling and stage shows. Performing in stage shows is quite exhilarating. The interaction with a live audience is a high.” Yana recently did her second item number for Suniel Shetty’s film Rakth, with Sanjay Dutt, which she claims was a pleasurable experience. Was there talk of doing an item number in Sanjay Gupta’s Musafir? “My manager is talking to Sanjay Gupta. But I am not too sure which song he wants me to do,” she confides. Then suddenly, her demeanour changes and she says irritatedly, “Just the other day there was a news item saying that I had a fight with Sanjay Gupta. And it really upset me. Why can’t people get their facts right? Honestly, do they really think I’m big enough to go fighting with a film-maker? “First the paper said that I had a misunderstanding with Sanjay Gupta and then they said that, when contacted, both parties denied the issue. Where is the question of denial when there was no fight in the first place? These guys made up the fight and then the denial.” hat doesn’t bother her, she says, is narrow-minded sorts looking askance at her because she is an ‘item’ girl. “I enjoy doing item numbers and that is the only thing of importance,” she shrugs. Besides, she says, her husband, Pune-based painter Satyakam Gupta, helps her keep her bearings. “My husband is an amazing man,” she says. “He is very supportive of my work. Though I’ve been in India for over six years now, I am still new to the ways of the film industry and the mindset of people around. So Satyakam tells me how to approach my work and how to deal with all kinds of people.” Born in Bruno, the second largest city in Czechoslovakia, Yana says she has now come to love everything about Mumbai. “Earlier I used to complain about the pollution and the hygiene standards. I hate people throwing things out of windows. Even if my husband throws something I will pick it up and put it in his pocket,” she says. Then adds, “But Mumbai is very warm and very nice. And now I like everything about this place. When I pass the slums and see the people there smiling, I wonder, what are we unhappy about?”
